The investigation of bandwidth efficient coding and modulation techniques

    Get PDF
The New Mexico State University Center for Space Telemetering and Telecommunications systems has been, and is currently, engaged in the investigation of trellis-coded modulation (TCM) communication systems. In particular, TCM utilizing M-ary phase shift keying is being studied. The study of carrier synchronization in a TCM environment, or in MPSK systems in general, has been one of the two main thrusts of this grant. This study has involved both theoretical modelling and software simulation of the carrier synchronization problem

The New Mexico State University (NMSU) Center for Space Telemetering and Telecommunications systems is engaged in advanced communications systems research. Four areas of study that are being sponsored concern investigations into the use of trellis-coded modulation (TCM). In particular, two areas concentrate on carrier synchronization research in TCM M-ary phase shift key (MPSK) systems. A third research topic is the study of interference effects on TCM, while the fourth research area is in the field of concatenated TCM systems

Carrier synchronization and data demodulation of Unbalanced Quadriphase Shift Keyed (UQPSK) Shuttle communications' signals by optimum and suboptimum methods are discussed. The problem of analyzing carrier reconstruction techniques for unbalanced QPSK signal formats is addressed. An evaluation of the demodulation approach of the Ku-Band Shuttle return link for UQPSK when the I-Q channel power ratio is large is carried out. The effects that Shuttle rocket motor plumes have on the RF communications are determined also. The effect of data asymmetry on bit error probability is discussed

    Synchronization in M-PSK Modems

    Get PDF
In many applications, it is economical for a single modem to receive multiple modulation formats. In particular, the use of BPSK and QPSK has become a defacto standard in many military and NASA systems. However, there is significant interest in employing 8PSK and 16PSK modulation in these same systems today in order to conserve bandwidth. This paper addresses a technique for achieving carrier synchronization for all four of these PSK schemes in a single modem. This is accomplished by using quadrature channel carrier recovery processing and a version of the MAP phase detector algorithm. A model for the simulation of this tracking process is derived and results are presented to confirm its functionality

The role of synchronization in digital communications using chaos - part I: fundamentals of digital communications.

    Get PDF
In a digital communications system, data is transmitted from one location to another by mapping bit sequences to symbols, and symbols to sample functions of analog waveforms. The analog waveform passes through a bandlimited (possibly time-varying) analog channel, where the signal is distorted and noise is added. In a conventional system the analog sample functions sent through the channel are weighted sums of one or more sinusoids; in a chaotic communications system, the sample functions are segments of chaotic waveforms. At the receiver, the symbol may be recovered by means of coherent detection, where all possible sample functions are known, or by noncoherent detection, where one or more characteristics of the sample functions are estimated. In a coherent receiver, synchronization is the most commonly used technique for recovering the sample functions from the received waveform. These sample functions are then used as reference signals for a correlator. Synchronization-based receivers have advantages over noncoherent ones in terms of noise performance and bandwidth efficiency. These advantages are lost if synchronization cannot be maintained, for example, under poor propagation conditions. In these circumstances, communication without synchronization may be preferable. The main aim of this paper is to provide a unified approach for the analysis and comparison of conventional and chaotic communications systems. In Part I, the operation of sinusoidal communications techniques is surveyed in order to clarify the role of synchronization and to classify possible demodulation methods for chaotic communication

Frequency Offset Tolerant Demodulation for Low Data Rate and Narrowband Wireless Sensor Node

    Get PDF
The issue of frequency offset in low data rate, narrowband and low power communication nodes is considered in this paper. To avoid power hungry precise frequency generation, offset tolerant demodulation and detection schemes are investigated. A Short-Time DFT (ST-DFT) based detection for BFSK is introduced which improves the BER performance of an existing design by almost 1dB. Its BER performance and complexity are also compared to frequency offset tolerant DDBPSK demodulation. Additionally, the effect of wider filter required to capture signal in presence of frequency offset is considered. The trade-off between performance and complexity for different offset values and filter bandwidths is discussed. Both methods work independent of frequency offset; however, it is shown that wider filters do not affect ST-DFT BER performance in contrast with DDBPSK. This robustness is obtained at the expense of increased computational load
