Doodle to Search: Practical Zero-Shot Sketch-based Image Retrieval
In this paper, we investigate the problem of zero-shot sketch-based image
retrieval (ZS-SBIR), where human sketches are used as queries to conduct
retrieval of photos from unseen categories. We importantly advance prior arts
by proposing a novel ZS-SBIR scenario that represents a firm step forward in
its practical application. The new setting uniquely recognizes two important
yet often neglected challenges of practical ZS-SBIR, (i) the large domain gap
between amateur sketch and photo, and (ii) the necessity for moving towards
large-scale retrieval. We first contribute to the community a novel ZS-SBIR
dataset, QuickDraw-Extended, that consists of 330,000 sketches and 204,000
photos spanning across 110 categories. Highly abstract amateur human sketches
are purposefully sourced to maximize the domain gap, instead of ones included
in existing datasets that can often be semi-photorealistic. We then formulate a
ZS-SBIR framework to jointly model sketches and photos into a common embedding
space. A novel strategy to mine the mutual information among domains is
specifically engineered to alleviate the domain gap. External semantic
knowledge is further embedded to aid semantic transfer. We show that, rather
surprisingly, retrieval performance significantly outperforms that of
state-of-the-art on existing datasets that can already be achieved using a
reduced version of our model. We further demonstrate the superior performance
of our full model by comparing with a number of alternatives on the newly
proposed dataset. The new dataset, plus all training and testing code of our

Improving Ontology Recommendation and Reuse in WebCORE by Collaborative Assessments
In this work, we present an extension of CORE [8], a tool for Collaborative Ontology Reuse and Evaluation. The system receives an informal description of a specific semantic domain and determines which ontologies from a repository are the most appropriate to describe the given domain. For this task, the environment is divided into three modules. The first component receives the problem description as a set of terms, and allows the user to refine and enlarge it using WordNet. The second module applies multiple automatic criteria to evaluate the ontologies of the repository, and determines which ones fit best the problem description. A ranked list of ontologies is returned for each criterion, and the lists are combined by means of rank fusion techniques. Finally, the third component uses manual user evaluations in order to incorporate a human, collaborative assessment of the ontologies. The new version of the system incorporates several novelties, such as its implementation as a web application; the incorporation of a NLP module to manage the problem definitions; modifications on the automatic ontology retrieval strategies; and a collaborative framework to find potential relevant terms according to previous user queries. Finally, we present some early experiments on ontology retrieval and evaluation, showing the benefits of our system
Automatic domain ontology extraction for context-sensitive opinion mining
Automated analysis of the sentiments presented in online consumer feedbacks can facilitate both organizations’ business strategy development and individual consumers’ comparison shopping. Nevertheless, existing opinion mining methods either adopt a context-free sentiment classification approach or rely on a large number of manually annotated training examples to perform context sensitive sentiment classification. Guided by the design science research methodology, we illustrate the design, development, and evaluation of a novel fuzzy domain ontology based contextsensitive opinion mining system. Our novel ontology extraction mechanism underpinned by a variant of Kullback-Leibler divergence can automatically acquire contextual sentiment knowledge across various product domains to improve the sentiment analysis processes. Evaluated based on a benchmark dataset and real consumer reviews collected from Amazon.com, our system shows remarkable performance improvement over the context-free baseline
Automatic semantic video annotation in wide domain videos based on similarity and commonsense knowledgebases
In this paper, we introduce a novel framework for automatic Semantic Video Annotation. As this framework detects possible events occurring in video clips, it forms the annotating base of video search engine. To achieve this purpose, the system has to able to operate on uncontrolled wide-domain videos. Thus, all layers have to be based on generic features.
This framework aims to bridge the "semantic gap", which is the difference between the low-level visual features and the human's perception, by finding videos with similar visual events, then analyzing their free text annotation to find a common area then to decide the best description for this new video using commonsense knowledgebases.
Experiments were performed on wide-domain video clips from the TRECVID 2005 BBC rush standard database. Results from these experiments show promising integrity between those two layers in order to find expressing annotations for the input video. These results were evaluated based on retrieval performance
Advanced content-based semantic scene analysis and information retrieval: the SCHEMA project
The aim of the SCHEMA Network of Excellence is to bring together a critical mass of universities, research centers, industrial partners and end users, in order to design a reference system for content-based semantic scene analysis, interpretation and understanding. Relevant research areas include: content-based multimedia analysis and automatic annotation of semantic multimedia content, combined textual and multimedia information retrieval, semantic -web, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 standards, user interfaces and human factors. In this paper, recent advances in content-based analysis, indexing and retrieval of digital media within the SCHEMA Network are presented. These advances will be integrated in the SCHEMA module-based, expandable reference system
