Tensor Computation: A New Framework for High-Dimensional Problems in EDA
Many critical EDA problems suffer from the curse of dimensionality, i.e. the
very fast-scaling computational burden produced by large number of parameters
and/or unknown variables. This phenomenon may be caused by multiple spatial or
temporal factors (e.g. 3-D field solvers discretizations and multi-rate circuit
simulation), nonlinearity of devices and circuits, large number of design or
optimization parameters (e.g. full-chip routing/placement and circuit sizing),
or extensive process variations (e.g. variability/reliability analysis and
design for manufacturability). The computational challenges generated by such
high dimensional problems are generally hard to handle efficiently with
traditional EDA core algorithms that are based on matrix and vector
computation. This paper presents "tensor computation" as an alternative general
framework for the development of efficient EDA algorithms and tools. A tensor
is a high-dimensional generalization of a matrix and a vector, and is a natural
choice for both storing and solving efficiently high-dimensional EDA problems.
This paper gives a basic tutorial on tensors, demonstrates some recent examples
of EDA applications (e.g., nonlinear circuit modeling and high-dimensional
uncertainty quantification), and suggests further open EDA problems where the
use of tensor computation could be of advantage.Comment: 14 figures. Accepted by IEEE Trans. CAD of Integrated Circuits and

Analysis and elimination of hysteresis and noisy precursors in power amplifiers
Power amplifiers (PAs) often exhibit instabilities leading to frequency division by two or oscillations at incommensurate frequencies. This undesired behavior can be detected through a large-signal stability analysis of the solution. However, other commonly observed phenomena are still difficult to predict and eliminate. In this paper, the anomalous behavior observed in a Class-E PA is analyzed in detail. It involves hysteresis in the power-transfer curve, oscillation, and noisy precursors. The precursors are pronounced bumps in the power spectrum due to noise amplification under a small stability margin. The correction of the amplifier performance has required the development of a new technique for the elimination of the hysteresis. Instead of a trial-and-error procedure, this technique, of general application to circuit design, makes use of bifurcation concepts to suppress the hysteresis phenomenon through a single simulation on harmonic-balance software. Another objective has been the investigation of the circuit characteristics that make the noisy precursors observable in practical circuits and a technique has been derived for their elimination from the amplifier output spectrum. All the different techniques have been experimentally validated
Numerical Simulation of Electronic Systems Based on Circuit- Block Partitioning Strategies
Numerical simulation of complex and heterogeneous electronic systems can be a very challenging issue. Circuits composed of a combination of analog, mixed-signal and digital blocks or even radio frequency (RF) blocks, integrated in the same substrate, are very difficult to simulate as a whole at the circuit level. The main reason is because they contain a lot of state variables presenting very distinct properties and evolving in very widely separated time scales. Examples of practical interest are systems-on-a-chip (SoCs), very common in mobile electronics applications, as well as in many other embedded electronic systems. This chapter is intended to briefly review some advanced circuit-level numerical simulation techniques based on circuit-block partitioning schemes, which were especially designed to address the simulation challenges brought by this kind of circuits into the computer-aided-design (CAD) field

Effective time-domain approach for the assessment of the stability characteristics and other non-linear effects of RF and microwave circuits
This study describes a systematic approach for the stability analysis of RF and microwave non-linear circuits in the time-domain and that can be useful also for the verification of other non-linearities, like intermodulation. The time-domain analysis is the most reliable approach for the evaluation of complex non-linear phenomena but, in general, the transient behaviour of non-linear circuits is difficult to verify at high frequencies, where distributed elements are common. The solution here addressed overcomes this limitation and it may be applied, without restrictions, also to monolithic microwave integrated circuits and EM-based designs. Examples of application to hybrid prototypes are provided, and the comparison between simulations and measurements illustrates the accuracy and reliability of the proposed approach
