Evaluation of Design Tools for Rapid Prototyping of Parallel Signal Processing Algorithms

    Get PDF
Digital signal processing (DSP) has become a popular method for handling not only signal processing, but communications, and control system applications. A DSP application of interest to the Air Force is high speed avionics processing. The real time computing requirements of avionics processing exceed the capabilities of current single chip DSP processors, and parallelization of multiple DSP processors is a solution to handle such requirements. Designing and implementing a parallel DSP algorithm has been a lengthy process often requiring different design tools and extensive programming experience. Through the use of integrated software development tools, rapid prototyping becomes possible by simulating algorithms, generating code for workstations or DSP microprocessors, and generating hardware description language code for hardware synthesis. This research examines the use of one such tool, the Signal Processing WorkSystem (SPW) by the Alta Group of Cadence Design Systems, Inc., and how SPW supports the rapid prototyping process from an avionics algorithm design through simulation and hardware implementation. Throughout this process, SPW is evaluated as an aid to the avionics designer to meet design objectives and evaluate tradeoffs to find the best blend of efficiency and effectiveness. By designing a two dimensional fast Fourier transform algorithm as a specific avionics algorithm and exploring implementation options, SPW is shown to be a viable rapid prototyping solution allowing an avionics designer to focus on design trade-offs instead of implementation details while using parallelization to meet real-time application requirements

FPGA design methodology for industrial control systems—a review

This paper reviews the state of the art of fieldprogrammable gate array (FPGA) design methodologies with a focus on industrial control system applications. This paper starts with an overview of FPGA technology development, followed by a presentation of design methodologies, development tools and relevant CAD environments, including the use of portable hardware description languages and system level programming/design tools. They enable a holistic functional approach with the major advantage of setting up a unique modeling and evaluation environment for complete industrial electronics systems. Three main design rules are then presented. These are algorithm refinement, modularity, and systematic search for the best compromise between the control performance and the architectural constraints. An overview of contributions and limits of FPGAs is also given, followed by a short survey of FPGA-based intelligent controllers for modern industrial systems. Finally, two complete and timely case studies are presented to illustrate the benefits of an FPGA implementation when using the proposed system modeling and design methodology. These consist of the direct torque control for induction motor drives and the control of a diesel-driven synchronous stand-alone generator with the help of fuzzy logic

technical reportWe believe that a structured, user-friendly, cost-effective tool for rapid implementation of VLSI circuits which encourages students to participate directly in research projects are the key components in digital integrated circuit (IC) education. In this paper, we introduce our VLSI education activities, with t h e emphasis on t h e presentation of Path Programmable Logic (PPL) design methodology, in addition to a short description of a representative student project. Students using PPL are able to implement MOS or GaAs VLSI circuits with several thousands to over 100,000 transistors in a few weeks. They have designed and built numerous VLSI architectures and computer systems which play an influential role in various research areas. Our educational activities and the Utah Annual Student VLSI Design Contest supported by over a dozen leading American firms have attracted multiple university involvement in recent years

    VLSI Watermark Implementations and Applications

    Get PDF
This paper presents an up to date review of digital watermarking (WM) from a VLSI designer point of view. The reader is introduced to basic principles and terms in the field of image watermarking. It goes through a brief survey on WM theory, laying out common classification criterions and discussing important design considerations and trade-offs. Elementary WM properties such as robustness, computational complexity and their influence on image quality are discussed. Common attacks and testing benchmarks are also briefly mentioned. It is shown that WM design must take the intended application into account. The difference between software and hardware implementations is explained through the introduction of a general scheme of a WM system and two examples from previous works. A versatile methodology to aid in a reliable and modular design process is suggested. Relating to mixed-signal VLSI design and testing, the proposed methodology allows an efficient development of a CMOS image sensor with WM capabilities

Rapid Prototyping of Embedded Vision Systems: Embedding Computer Vision Applications into Low-Power Heterogeneous Architectures

Embedded vision is a disruptive new technology in the vision industry. It is a revolutionary concept with far reaching implications, and it is opening up new applications and shaping the future of entire industries. It is applied in self-driving cars, autonomous vehicles in agriculture, digital dermascopes that help specialists make more accurate diagnoses, among many other unique and cutting-edge applications. The design of such systems gives rise to new challenges for embedded Software developers. Embedded vision applications are characterized by stringent performance constraints to guarantee real-time behaviours and, at the same time, energy constraints to save battery on the mobile platforms. In this paper, we address such challenges by proposing an overall view of the problem and by analysing current solutions. We present our last results on embedded vision design automation over two main aspects: the adoption of the model-based paradigm for the embedded vision rapid prototyping, and the application of heterogeneous programming languages to improve the system performance. The paper presents our recent results on the design of a localization and mapping application combined with image recognition based on deep learning optimized for an NVIDIA Jetson TX2
