A deep reinforcement learning based homeostatic system for unmanned position control

    Get PDF
Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has been proven to be capable of designing an optimal control theory by minimising the error in dynamic systems. However, in many of the real-world operations, the exact behaviour of the environment is unknown. In such environments, random changes cause the system to reach different states for the same action. Hence, application of DRL for unpredictable environments is difficult as the states of the world cannot be known for non-stationary transition and reward functions. In this paper, a mechanism to encapsulate the randomness of the environment is suggested using a novel bio-inspired homeostatic approach based on a hybrid of Receptor Density Algorithm (an artificial immune system based anomaly detection application) and a Plastic Spiking Neuronal model. DRL is then introduced to run in conjunction with the above hybrid model. The system is tested on a vehicle to autonomously re-position in an unpredictable environment. Our results show that the DRL based process control raised the accuracy of the hybrid model by 32%.N/

Machine Learning in Manufacturing towards Industry 4.0: From ‘For Now’ to ‘Four-Know’

    Get PDF
While attracting increasing research attention in science and technology, Machine Learning (ML) is playing a critical role in the digitalization of manufacturing operations towards Industry 4.0. Recently, ML has been applied in several fields of production engineering to solve a variety of tasks with different levels of complexity and performance. However, in spite of the enormous number of ML use cases, there is no guidance or standard for developing ML solutions from ideation to deployment. This paper aims to address this problem by proposing an ML application roadmap for the manufacturing industry based on the state-of-the-art published research on the topic. First, this paper presents two dimensions for formulating ML tasks, namely, ’Four-Know’ (Know-what, Know-why, Know-when, Know-how) and ’Four-Level’ (Product, Process, Machine, System). These are used to analyze ML development trends in manufacturing. Then, the paper provides an implementation pipeline starting from the very early stages of ML solution development and summarizes the available ML methods, including supervised learning methods, semi-supervised methods, unsupervised methods, and reinforcement methods, along with their typical applications. Finally, the paper discusses the current challenges during ML applications and provides an outline of possible directions for future developments

Condition-Based Monitoring on High-Precision Gearbox for Robotic Applications

    Get PDF
This work presents a theoretical and experimental study regarding defect detection in a robotic gearbox using vibration signals in both cyclostationary and noncyclostationary conditions. The existing work focuses on inferring the health of the robot during operation with little regard toward the defective element of the components. This article illustrates the detection of specific element damage of a robotic gearbox during a robotic cycle based on domain knowledge and presents a novel data-driven method for asset health. This starts by studying the robotic gearbox, specifically its kinematics as a planetary 2-stage reduction gearbox to acquire the knowledge of the rotations of each component. The signals acquired from a test bench with four sensors undergo different acquisition methods and signal processing techniques to correlate the elements' frequencies. The work shows the detection of the artificially created defects from the acquired vibration data, verifying the kinematic methodology and identifying the root cause of failure of such gearboxes. A novel resampling method, Binning, is presented and compared with the traditional signal processing techniques. Binning combined with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) as a data-driven method to infer the state of the gearbox is presented, tested, and validated. This work presents methods as a step toward automatized predictive maintenance on robots in industrial applications

FaultFace: Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DCGAN) based Ball-Bearing Failure Detection Method

Failure detection is employed in the industry to improve system performance and reduce costs due to unexpected malfunction events. So, a good dataset of the system is desirable for designing an automated failure detection system. However, industrial process datasets are unbalanced and contain little information about failure behavior due to the uniqueness of these events and the high cost for running the system just to get information about the undesired behaviors. For this reason, performing correct training and validation of automated failure detection methods is challenging. This paper proposes a methodology called FaultFace for failure detection on Ball-Bearing joints for rotational shafts using deep learning techniques to create balanced datasets. The FaultFace methodology uses 2D representations of vibration signals denominated faceportraits obtained by time-frequency transformation techniques. From the obtained faceportraits, a Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network is employed to produce new faceportraits of the nominal and failure behaviors to get a balanced dataset. A Convolutional Neural Network is trained for fault detection employing the balanced dataset. The FaultFace methodology is compared with other deep learning techniques to evaluate its performance in for fault detection with unbalanced datasets. Obtained results show that FaultFace methodology has a good performance for failure detection for unbalanced datasets

CPS Data Streams Analytics based on Machine Learning for Cloud and Fog Computing: A Survey

    Get PDF
Cloud and Fog computing has emerged as a promising paradigm for the Internet of things (IoT) and cyber-physical systems (CPS). One characteristic of CPS is the reciprocal feedback loops between physical processes and cyber elements (computation, software and networking), which implies that data stream analytics is one of the core components of CPS. The reasons for this are: (i) it extracts the insights and the knowledge from the data streams generated by various sensors and other monitoring components embedded in the physical systems; (ii) it supports informed decision making; (iii) it enables feedback from the physical processes to the cyber counterparts; (iv) it eventually facilitates the integration of cyber and physical systems. There have been many successful applications of data streams analytics, powered by machine learning techniques, to CPS systems. Thus, it is necessary to have a survey on the particularities of the application of machine learning techniques to the CPS domain. In particular, we explore how machine learning methods should be deployed and integrated in cloud and fog architectures for better fulfilment of the requirements, e.g. mission criticality and time criticality, arising in CPS domains. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to systematically study machine learning techniques for CPS data stream analytics from various perspectives, especially from a perspective that leads to the discussion and guidance of how the CPS machine learning methods should be deployed in a cloud and fog architecture

This document describes the progress and plans of the Artificial Intelligence Research Branch (RIA) at ARC in 1990. Activities span a range from basic scientific research to engineering development and to fielded NASA applications, particularly those applications that are enabled by basic research carried out at RIA. Work is conducted in-house and through collaborative partners in academia and industry. Our major focus is on a limited number of research themes with a dual commitment to technical excellence and proven applicability to NASA short, medium, and long-term problems. RIA acts as the Agency's lead organization for research aspects of artificial intelligence, working closely with a second research laboratory at JPL and AI applications groups at all NASA centers

A Graphical Model to Diagnose Product Defects with Partially Shuffled Equipment Data

    Get PDF
The diagnosis of product defects is an important task in manufacturing, and machine learning-based approaches have attracted interest from both the industry and academia. A high-quality dataset is necessary to develop a machine learning model, but the manufacturing industry faces several data-collection issues including partially shuffled data, which arises when a product ID is not perfectly inferred and yields an unstable machine learning model. This paper introduces latent variables to formulate a supervised learning model that addresses the problem of partially shuffled data. The experimental results show that our graphical model deals with the shuffling of product order and can detect a defective product far more effectively than a model that ignores shuffling. This work has supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grant funded by the Korea government (MSIT) (2019R1A2C1088255)
