    Design of multimedia processor based on metric computation

    Media-processing applications, such as signal processing, 2D and 3D graphics rendering, and image compression, are the dominant workloads in many embedded systems today. The real-time constraints of those media applications have taxing demands on today's processor performances with low cost, low power and reduced design delay. To satisfy those challenges, a fast and efficient strategy consists in upgrading a low cost general purpose processor core. This approach is based on the personalization of a general RISC processor core according the target multimedia application requirements. Thus, if the extra cost is justified, the general purpose processor GPP core can be enforced with instruction level coprocessors, coarse grain dedicated hardware, ad hoc memories or new GPP cores. In this way the final design solution is tailored to the application requirements. The proposed approach is based on three main steps: the first one is the analysis of the targeted application using efficient metrics. The second step is the selection of the appropriate architecture template according to the first step results and recommendations. The third step is the architecture generation. This approach is experimented using various image and video algorithms showing its feasibility

    Hardware/software codesign of configurable fuzzy control systems

    Fuzzy inference techniques are an attractive and well-established approach for solving control problems. This is mainly due to their inherent ability to obtain robust, low-cost controllers from the intuitive (and usually ambiguous or incomplete) linguistic rules used by human operators when describing the control process. This paper focuses on the hardware/software codesign of configurable fuzzy control systems. Two prototype systems implemented on general-purpose development boards are presented. In both of them, hardware components are based on specific and configurable fuzzy inference architecture whereas software tasks are supported by a microcontroller. The first prototype uses an off-the-shelf microcontroller and a low-complexity Xilinx XC4005XL field programmable gate array (FPGA). The second one is implemented as a system on programmable chip (SoPC), integrating the microcontroller together with the fuzzy hardware architecture and its interface circuits into a Xilinx Spartan2E200 FPGA.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC2001-1726-C02-0

    Analytical cost metrics: days of future past

    2019 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.Future exascale high-performance computing (HPC) systems are expected to be increasingly heterogeneous, consisting of several multi-core CPUs and a large number of accelerators, special-purpose hardware that will increase the computing power of the system in a very energy-efficient way. Specialized, energy-efficient accelerators are also an important component in many diverse systems beyond HPC: gaming machines, general purpose workstations, tablets, phones and other media devices. With Moore's law driving the evolution of hardware platforms towards exascale, the dominant performance metric (time efficiency) has now expanded to also incorporate power/energy efficiency. This work builds analytical cost models for cost metrics such as time, energy, memory access, and silicon area. These models are used to predict the performance of applications, for performance tuning, and chip design. The idea is to work with domain specific accelerators where analytical cost models can be accurately used for performance optimization. The performance optimization problems are formulated as mathematical optimization problems. This work explores the analytical cost modeling and mathematical optimization approach in a few ways. For stencil applications and GPU architectures, the analytical cost models are developed for execution time as well as energy. The models are used for performance tuning over existing architectures, and are coupled with silicon area models of GPU architectures to generate highly efficient architecture configurations. For matrix chain products, analytical closed form solutions for off-chip data movement are built and used to minimize the total data movement cost of a minimum op count tree

    Automatic generation of hardware/software interfaces

    Enabling new applications for mobile devices often requires the use of specialized hardware to reduce power consumption. Because of time-to-market pressure, current design methodologies for embedded applications require an early partitioning of the design, allowing the hardware and software to be developed simultaneously, each adhering to a rigid interface contract. This approach is problematic for two reasons: (1) a detailed hardware-software interface is difficult to specify until one is deep into the design process, and (2) it prevents the later migration of functionality across the interface motivated by efficiency concerns or the addition of features. We address this problem using the Bluespec Codesign Language~(BCL) which permits the designer to specify the hardware-software partition in the source code, allowing the compiler to synthesize efficient software and hardware along with transactors for communication between the partitions. The movement of functionality across the hardware-software boundary is accomplished by simply specifying a new partitioning, and since the compiler automatically generates the desired interface specifications, it eliminates yet another error-prone design task.     Graph based communication analysis for hardware/software codesign

    In this paper we present a coarse grain CDFG (Control/Data Flow Graph) model suitable for hardware/software partitioning of single processes and demonstrate how it is necessary to perform various transformations on the graph structure before partitioning in order to achieve a structure that allows for accurate estimation of communication overhead between nodes mapped to different processors. In particular, we demonstrate how various transformations of control structures can lead to a more accurate communication analysis and more efficient implementations.     Processor Enhancements for Media Streaming Applications

    The development of more processing demanding applications on the Internet (video broadcasting) on one hand and the popularity of recent devices at the user level (digital cameras, wireless videophones, ...) on the other hand introduce challenges at several levels. Today, such devices present processing capabilities and bandwidth settings that are inefficient to manage scalable QoS requirements in a typical media delivery framework. In this paper, we present an impact study of such a scalable data representation optimized for QoS (Matching Pursuit 3D algorithms) on processor architectures to achieve the best performance and power efficiency. A review of state of the art techniques for processor architecture enhancement let us expect promising opportunities from the latest developments in the reconfigurable computing research field. We present here the first design steps of an efficient reconfigurable coprocessor especially designed to cope with future video delivery and multimedia processing requirements.     A General Hardware/Software Co-design Methodology for Embedded Signal Processing and Multimedia Workloads

    This paper presents a hardware/software co-design methodology for partitioning real-time embedded multimedia applications between software programmable DSPs and hardware based FPGA coprocessors. By following a strict set of guidelines, the input application is partitioned between software executing on a programmable DSP and hardware based FPGA implementation to alleviate computational bottlenecks in modern VLIW style DSP architectures used in embedded systems. This methodology is applied to channel estimation firmware in 3.5G wireless receivers, as well as software based H.263 video decoders. As much as an 11x improvement in runtime performance can be achieved by partitioning performance critical software kernels in these workloads into a hardware based FPGA implementation executing in tandem with the existing host DSP.Nokia Inc.Texas InstrumentsNational Science Foundatio
