    Multirate sampled-data yaw-damper and modal suppression system design

    A multirate control law synthesized algorithm based on an infinite-time quadratic cost function, was developed along with a method for analyzing the robustness of multirate systems. A generalized multirate sampled-data control law structure (GMCLS) was introduced. A new infinite-time-based parameter optimization multirate sampled-data control law synthesis method and solution algorithm were developed. A singular-value-based method for determining gain and phase margins for multirate systems was also developed. The finite-time-based parameter optimization multirate sampled-data control law synthesis algorithm originally intended to be applied to the aircraft problem was instead demonstrated by application to a simpler problem involving the control of the tip position of a two-link robot arm. The GMCLS, the infinite-time-based parameter optimization multirate control law synthesis method and solution algorithm, and the singular-value based method for determining gain and phase margins were all demonstrated by application to the aircraft control problem originally proposed for this project

    A functional link network based adaptive power system stabilizer

    An on-line identifier using Functional Link Network (FLN) and Pole-shift (PS) controller for power system stabilizer (PSS) application are presented in this thesis. To have the satisfactory performance of the PSS controller, over a wide range of operating conditions, it is desirable to adapt PSS parameters in real time. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) transform the inputs in a low-dimensional space to high-dimensional nonlinear hidden unit space and they have the ability to model the nonlinear characteristics of the power system. The ability of ANNs to learn makes them more suitable for use in adaptive control techniques. On-line identification obtains a mathematical model at each sampling period to track the dynamic behavior of the plant. The ANN identifier consisting of a Functional link Network (FLN) is used for identifying the model parameters. A FLN model eliminates the need of hidden layer while retaining the nonlinear mapping capability of the neural network by using enhanced inputs. This network may be conveniently used for function approximation with faster convergence rate and lesser computational load. The most commonly used Pole Assignment (PA) algorithm for adaptive control purposes assign the pole locations to fixed locations within the unit circle in the z-plane. It may not be optimum for different operating conditions. In this thesis, PS type of adaptive control algorithm is used. This algorithm, instead of assigning the closed-loop poles to fixed locations within the unit circle in the z-plane, this algorithm assumes that the pole characteristic polynomial of the closed-loop system has the same form as the pole characteristic of the open-loop system and shifts the open-loop poles radially towards the centre of the unit circle in the z-plane by a shifting factor α according to some rules. In this control algorithm, no coefficients need to be tuned manually, so manual parameter tuning (which is a drawback in conventional power system stabilizer) is minimized. The PS control algorithm uses the on-line updated ARMA parameters to calculate the new closed-loop poles of the system that are always inside the unit circle in the z-plane. Simulation studies on a single-machine infinite bus and on a multi-machine power system for various operating condition changes, verify the effectiveness of the combined model of FLN identifier and PS control in damping the local and multi-mode oscillations occurring in the system. Simulation studies prove that the APSSs have significant benefits over conventional PSSs: performance improvement and no requirement for parameter tuning

    Eigenstructure assignment in vibrating systems through active and passive approaches

    The dynamic behaviour of a vibrating system depends on its eigenstructure, which consists of the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors. In fact, eigenvalues define natural frequencies, damping and settling time, while eigenvectors define the spatial distribution of vibrations, i.e. the mode shape, and also affect the sensitivity of eigenvalues with respect to the system parameters. Therefore, eigenstructure assignment, which is aimed at modifying the system in such a way that it features the desired set of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, is of fundamental importance in mechanical design. However, similarly to several other inverse problems, eigenstructure assignment is inherently challenging, due to its ill-posed nature. Despite the recent advancements of the state of the art in eigenstructure assignment, in fact, there are still important open issues. The available methods for eigenstructure assignment can be grouped into two classes: passive approaches, which consist in modifying the physical parameters of the system, and active approaches, which consist in employing actuators and sensors to exert suitable control forces as determined by a specified control law. Since both these approaches have advantages and drawbacks, it is important to choose the most appropriate strategy for the application of interest. In the present thesis, in fact, are collected passive, active, and even hybrid methods, in which active and passive techniques are concurrently employed. All the methods proposed in the thesis are aimed at solving open issues that emerged from the literature and which have applicative relevance, as well as theoretical. In contrast to several state-of-the-art methods, in fact, the proposed ones implement strategies that enable to ensure that the computed solutions are meaningful and feasible. Moreover, given that in modern mechanical design large-scale systems are increasingly common, computational issues have become a major concern and thus have been adequately addressed in the thesis. The proposed methods have been developed to be general and broadly applicable. In order to demonstrate the versatility of the methods, in the thesis it is provided an extensive numerical assessment, hence diverse test-cases have been used for validation purposes. In order to evaluate without bias the performances of the proposed methods, it has been chosen to employ well-established benchmarks from the literature. Moreover, selected experimental applications are presented in the thesis, in order to determine the capabilities of the developed methods when critically challenged. Given the focus on these issues, it is expected that the methods here proposed can constitute effective tools to improve the dynamic behaviour of vibrating systems and it is hoped that the present work could contribute to spread the use of eigenstructure assignment in the solution of engineering design problems

    An FPGA architecture design of a high performance adaptive notch filter

    The occurrence of narrowband interference near frequencies carrying information is a common problem in modern control and signal processing applications. A very narrow notch filter is required in order to remove the unwanted signal while not compromising the integrity of the carrier signal. In many practical situations, the interference may wander within a frequency band, in which case a wider notch filter would be needed to guarantee its removal, which may also allow for the degradation of information being carried in nearby frequencies. If the interference frequency could be autonomously tracked, a narrow bandwidth notch filter could be successfully implemented for the particular frequency. Adaptive signal processing is a powerful technique that can be used in the tracking and elimination of such a signal. An application where an adaptive notch filter becomes necessary is in biomedical instrumentation, such as the electrocardiogram recorder. The recordings can become useless when in the presence of electromagnetic fields generated by power lines. Research was conducted to fully characterize the interference. Research on notch filter structures and adaptive filter algorithms has been carried out. The lattice form filter structure was chosen for its inherent stability and performance benefits. A new adaptive filter algorithm was developed targeting a hardware implementation. The algorithm used techniques from several other algorithms that were found to be beneficial. This work developed the hardware implementation of a lattice form adaptive notch filter to be used for the removal of power line interference from electrocardiogram signals. The various design tradeo s encountered were documented. The final design was targeted toward multiple field programmable gate arrays using multiple optimization efforts. Those results were then compared. The adaptive notch filter was able to successfully track and remove the interfering signal. The lattice form structure utilized by the proposed filter was verified to exhibit an inherently stable realization. The filter was subjected to various environments that modeled the different power line disturbances that could be present. The final filter design resulted in a 3 dB bandwidth of 15.8908 Hz, and a null depth of 54 dB. For the baseline test case, the algorithm achieved convergence after 270 iterations. The final hardware implementation was successfully verified against the MATLAB simulation results. A speedup of 3.8 was seen between the Xilinx Virtex-5 and Spartan-II device technologies. The final design used a small fraction of the available resources for each of the two devices that were characterized. This would allow the component to be more readily available to be added to existing projects, or further optimized by utilizing additional logic

    Battery Integration to the Power Grid and Frequency Regulation

    The growing interest in battery energy storage systems (BESSs) at both small-scale and large-scale levels in power grids highlights their significant roles in future power grids. The future grid in the presence of renewable resources such as hydro-power, wind, and solar energy face two major technical challenges; location of potential renewable sources and uncertainty, which can cause serious issues such as blackouts in power systems. However, in both cases, BESSs is one of the promising solutions. While small-scale battery energy storage systems can decrease the need for long-distance heavy load transportation in the power system, which is one of the primary reasons for the blackouts, large-scale BESSs can provide load frequency control to their fast response. A well-managed large-scale battery integration to the power grid reduces load flow deviation in the tie-lines and frequency oscillations caused by small load disturbances. In general, the battery’s small time-constants, fast response, and high energy density creates a large spectrum of potential applications for BESSs in power systems. This thesis focuses on the battery integration to the power system in both distribution and transmission level to evaluate its potential impact on power grid; then, it focuses on the frequency regulation by taking the advantage of the small-scale and large-scale batteries. The first part of this research investigates the small-scale battery integration to the power system in the distribution level and its potential effects on the transmission level\u27s frequency deviation. It is shown that the higher penetration level of the renewables can cause serious issues such as overvoltage, thermal, and frequency deviation issues in the distribution and transmission levels under current tariffs. The load profile\u27s sensitivity to the battery characteristics and its efficiency, and electricity tariffs are studied. Then, tariff modification as one of the promising tools for load profile adjustment is introduced to modify the customers\u27 load profile and mitigate the frequency deviation. The results under modified tariffs are compared to the frequency control results in a small microgrid using model predictive control. In the second chapter, the effect of those new loads on the power flow and inter-area oscillation modes are studied. Then a servomechanism controller is designed to damp the inter-area oscillations. Considering the small time constant of the large-scale battery, we model a large-scale battery integration to the power system to study the effect of its integration on the power system\u27s stability. Finally, centralized and decentralized hybrid controls are designed on the inverter\u27s firing angle to manage the large-scale battery\u27s active and reactive power to damp the oscillations. Results show a notable improvement on frequency deviations
