One of the most prosperous domains that Data mining accomplished a great progress is Food Security and safety. Some of Data mining techniques studies applied several machine learning algorithms to enhance and traceability of food supply chain safety procedures and some of them applying machine learning methodologies with several feature selection methods for detecting and predicting the most significant key performance indicators affect food safety. In this research we proposed an adaptive data mining model applying nine machine learning algorithms (Naive Bayes, Bayes Net Key -Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), J48, Hoeffding tree, Logistic Model Tree) with feature selection wrapper methods (forward and backward techniques) for detecting food deterioration’s key performance indicators. In conclusion the proposed model applied effectively and successfully detected the most significant indicators for meat safety and quality with the aim of helping farmers and suppliers for being sure of delivering safety meat for consumer and diminishing the cost of monitoring meat safety

The application of data mining techniques to interrogate Western Australian water catchment data sets

    Get PDF
Current environmental challenges such as increasing dry land salinity, waterlogging, eutrophication and high nutrient runoff in south western regions of Western Australia may have both cultural and environmental implications in the near future. Advances in computer science disciplines, more specifically, data mining techniques and geographic information services provide the means to be able to conduct longitudinal climate studies to predict changes in the Water catchment areas of Western Australia. The research proposes to utilise existing spatial data mining techniques in conjunction of modern open-source geospatial tools to interpret trends in Western Australian water catchment land use. This will be achieved through the development of a innovative data mining interrogation tool that measures and validates the effectiveness of data mining methods on a sample water catchment data set from the Peel Harvey region of WA. In doing so, the current and future statistical evaluation on potential dry land salinity trends can be eluded. The interrogation tool will incorporate different modern geospatial data mining techniques to discover meaningful and useful patterns specific to current agricultural problem domain of dry land salinity. Large GIS data sets of the water catchments on Peel-Harvey region have been collected by the state government Shared Land Information Platform in conjunction with the LandGate agency. The proposed tool will provide an interface for data analysis of water catchment data sets by benchmarking measures using the chosen data mining techniques, such as: classical statistical methods, cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The outcome of research will be to establish an innovative data mining instrument tool for interrogating salinity issues in water catchment in Western Australia, which provides a user friendly interface for use by government agencies, such as Department of Agriculture and Food of Western Australia researchers and other agricultural industry stakeholders

The storage location assignment problem: A literature review

    Get PDF
The storage of goods plays a crucial role in warehouse management systems. Although this operation is often considered simple, it is in fact complex, due to the volume of products, the uncertainty in demands, and the rapid customer service response that the market requires. Moreover, the optimization of logistical resources to maintain an efficient operational flow, such as the allocation of storage spaces, often requires complex decisions. In this paper, we analyze academic contributions on the storage location assignment problem published between 2005 and 2017. The literature is classified according to the solution methods, objectives, and related considerations. Suggestions are also provided for future research

Demand forecasting with high dimensional data: The case of SKU retail sales forecasting with intra- and inter-category promotional information

    Get PDF
In marketing analytics applications in OR, the modeler often faces the problem of selecting key variables from a large number of possibilities. For example, SKU level retail store sales are affected by inter and intra category effects which potentially need to be considered when deciding on promotional strategy and producing operational forecasts. But no research has yet put this well accepted concept into forecasting practice: an obvious obstacle is the ultra-high dimensionality of the variable space. This paper develops a four steps methodological framework to overcome the problem. It is illustrated by investigating the value of both intra- and inter-category SKU level promotional information in improving forecast accuracy. The method consists of the identification of potentially influential categories, the building of the explanatory variable space, variable selection and model estimation by a multistage LASSO regression, and the use of a rolling scheme to generate forecasts. The success of this new method for dealing with high dimensionality is demonstrated by improvements in forecasting accuracy compared to alternative methods of simplifying the variable space. The empirical results show that models integrating more information perform significantly better than the baseline model when using the proposed methodology framework. In general, we can improve the forecasting accuracy by 12.6 percent over the model using only the SKU's own predictors. But of the improvements achieved, 95 percent of it comes from the intra-category information, and only 5 percent from the inter-category information. The substantive marketing results also have implications for promotional category management

A systematic literature review on machine learning applications for sustainable agriculture supply chain performance

Agriculture plays an important role in sustaining all human activities. Major challenges such as overpopulation, competition for resources poses a threat to the food security of the planet. In order to tackle the ever-increasing complex problems in agricultural production systems, advancements in smart farming and precision agriculture offers important tools to address agricultural sustainability challenges. Data analytics hold the key to ensure future food security, food safety, and ecological sustainability. Disruptive information and communication technologies such as machine learning, big data analytics, cloud computing, and blockchain can address several problems such as productivity and yield improvement, water conservation, ensuring soil and plant health, and enhance environmental stewardship. The current study presents a systematic review of machine learning (ML) applications in agricultural supply chains (ASCs). Ninety three research papers were reviewed based on the applications of different ML algorithms in different phases of the ASCs. The study highlights how ASCs can benefit from ML techniques and lead to ASC sustainability. Based on the study findings an ML applications framework for sustainable ASC is proposed. The framework identifies the role of ML algorithms in providing real-time analytic insights for pro-active data-driven decision-making in the ASCs and provides the researchers, practitioners, and policymakers with guidelines on the successful management of ASCs for improved agricultural productivity and sustainability

The progress of data mining technology and large public popularity establish a need for a comprehensive text on the subject. The series of books entitled by "Data Mining" address the need by presenting in-depth description of novel mining algorithms and many useful applications. In addition to understanding each section deeply, the two books present useful hints and strategies to solving problems in the following chapters. The contributing authors have highlighted many future research directions that will foster multi-disciplinary collaborations and hence will lead to significant development in the field of data mining

Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

    Get PDF
Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse
