Singularity avoidance of a six degree of freedom three dimensional redundant planar manipulator
AbstractThis paper focuses on the improvement of singularity avoidance of three dimensional planar redundant manipulators by increasing its degrees of freedom without increasing the number of motors controlling the manipulator. Consequently, the method to build a three dimensional planar manipulator with six-degrees of freedom using three motors instead of six is discussed in detail. A comparison of the manipulability index values for the proposed manipulator is made with the manipulability index values of PUMA arm to demonstrate the effectiveness of using the proposed manipulator for singularity avoidance
Model Based Control of Soft Robots: A Survey of the State of the Art and Open Challenges
Continuum soft robots are mechanical systems entirely made of continuously
deformable elements. This design solution aims to bring robots closer to
invertebrate animals and soft appendices of vertebrate animals (e.g., an
elephant's trunk, a monkey's tail). This work aims to introduce the control
theorist perspective to this novel development in robotics. We aim to remove
the barriers to entry into this field by presenting existing results and future
challenges using a unified language and within a coherent framework. Indeed,
the main difficulty in entering this field is the wide variability of
terminology and scientific backgrounds, making it quite hard to acquire a
comprehensive view on the topic. Another limiting factor is that it is not
obvious where to draw a clear line between the limitations imposed by the
technology not being mature yet and the challenges intrinsic to this class of
robots. In this work, we argue that the intrinsic effects are the continuum or
multi-body dynamics, the presence of a non-negligible elastic potential field,
and the variability in sensing and actuation strategies.Comment: 69 pages, 13 figure
A continuum robotic platform for endoscopic non-contact laser surgery: design, control, and preclinical evaluation
The application of laser technologies in surgical interventions has been accepted in the clinical
domain due to their atraumatic properties. In addition to manual application of fibre-guided
lasers with tissue contact, non-contact transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) of laryngeal tumours
has been prevailed in ENT surgery. However, TLM requires many years of surgical training
for tumour resection in order to preserve the function of adjacent organs and thus preserve the
patient’s quality of life. The positioning of the microscopic laser applicator outside the patient
can also impede a direct line-of-sight to the target area due to anatomical variability and limit
the working space. Further clinical challenges include positioning the laser focus on the tissue
surface, imaging, planning and performing laser ablation, and motion of the target area during
surgery. This dissertation aims to address the limitations of TLM through robotic approaches and
intraoperative assistance. Although a trend towards minimally invasive surgery is apparent, no
highly integrated platform for endoscopic delivery of focused laser radiation is available to date.
Likewise, there are no known devices that incorporate scene information from endoscopic imaging
into ablation planning and execution. For focusing of the laser beam close to the target tissue, this
work first presents miniaturised focusing optics that can be integrated into endoscopic systems.
Experimental trials characterise the optical properties and the ablation performance. A robotic
platform is realised for manipulation of the focusing optics. This is based on a variable-length
continuum manipulator. The latter enables movements of the endoscopic end effector in five
degrees of freedom with a mechatronic actuation unit. The kinematic modelling and control of the
robot are integrated into a modular framework that is evaluated experimentally. The manipulation
of focused laser radiation also requires precise adjustment of the focal position on the tissue. For
this purpose, visual, haptic and visual-haptic assistance functions are presented. These support
the operator during teleoperation to set an optimal working distance. Advantages of visual-haptic
assistance are demonstrated in a user study. The system performance and usability of the overall
robotic system are assessed in an additional user study. Analogous to a clinical scenario, the
subjects follow predefined target patterns with a laser spot. The mean positioning accuracy of the
spot is 0.5 mm. Finally, methods of image-guided robot control are introduced to automate laser
ablation. Experiments confirm a positive effect of proposed automation concepts on non-contact
laser surgery.
Modeling and Control for a Class of Tendon-Driven Continuum Mechanisms
This thesis contributes to the emerging field of soft material robots and treats modeling, state estimation and control for a special class of continuum mechanisms.
The overall outcome of is a novel treatment of a continuum in robotics research. At first a description of the overall system as a tendon-driven multi-body system modeled by a nonlinear rigid-body dynamics is proposed. In combination with the introduced real-time pose and velocity estimation, nonlinear model-based control in real-time is possible. Furthermore, the structural properties of the model allow employing modern control methods for underactuated mechanical systems which are adapted to provide set point control for the upper platform.
The developed methods in modeling, state estimation and control presented in this work are experimentally validated on a humanoid robot.
Due to their promising results, this thesis lays the foundation for the use of tendon-driven continuum mechanisms as generic joint modules
for modular robotic systems which may mark the beginning of a new generation of light-weight robots
Robot Manipulators
Robot manipulators are developing more in the direction of industrial robots than of human workers. Recently, the applications of robot manipulators are spreading their focus, for example Da Vinci as a medical robot, ASIMO as a humanoid robot and so on. There are many research topics within the field of robot manipulators, e.g. motion planning, cooperation with a human, and fusion with external sensors like vision, haptic and force, etc. Moreover, these include both technical problems in the industry and theoretical problems in the academic fields. This book is a collection of papers presenting the latest research issues from around the world
Kinematics and Robot Design II (KaRD2019) and III (KaRD2020)
This volume collects papers published in two Special Issues “Kinematics and Robot Design II, KaRD2019” (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/KRD2019) and “Kinematics and Robot Design III, KaRD2020” (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/KaRD2020), which are the second and third issues of the KaRD Special Issue series hosted by the open access journal robotics. The KaRD series is an open environment where researchers present their works and discuss all topics focused on the many aspects that involve kinematics in the design of robotic/automatic systems. It aims at being an established reference for researchers in the field as other serial international conferences/publications are. Even though the KaRD series publishes one Special Issue per year, all the received papers are peer-reviewed as soon as they are submitted and, if accepted, they are immediately published in MDPI Robotics. Kinematics is so intimately related to the design of robotic/automatic systems that the admitted topics of the KaRD series practically cover all the subjects normally present in well-established international conferences on “mechanisms and robotics”.KaRD2019 together with KaRD2020 received 22 papers and, after the peer-review process, accepted only 17 papers. The accepted papers cover problems related to theoretical/computational kinematics, to biomedical engineering and to other design/applicative aspects
Study and Development of Mechatronic Devices and Machine Learning Schemes for Industrial Applications
The aim of this Ph.D. project is the study and development of mechatronic systems and machine learning models for machine tools and robotic applications to improve their performances. The industrial demands have imposed an ever-increasing accuracy and efficiency requirement whilst constraining the cost. In this context, this project focuses on machining processes (e.g. milling) that include complex systems such as 5-axes machine tool and industrial robots, employed for various applications. Beside the issues related to the machining process itself, the interaction between the machining centre and the robot must be considered for the complete industrial plant’s improvement. This scenario´s complexity depicts both specific machining problematics (e.g. vibrations) and more general issues related to the complete plant, such as machine tending with an industrial robot and energy consumption. Regarding the immensity of this area, this project is divided in two parts, the study and development of two mechatronic devices, based on piezoelectric stack actuators, for the active vibration control during the machining process, and the robot machine tending within the robotic cell, employing machine learning schemes for the trajectory definition and robot reachability to improve the corresponding positioning accuracy. In conclusion, this thesis aims to provide a set of solutions, based on mechatronic devices and machine learning schemes, to improve the conventional machining centre and the robotic systems performances. The studied systems can be integrated within a robotic cell, focusing on issues related to the specific machining process and to the interaction between robot-machining centre. This research required a thorough study of the state-of-the-art, the formulation of theoretical models, the functional design development, the identification of the critical aspects in the prototype designs, the simulation and experimental campaigns, and the analysis of the obtained results
Design of a chattering-free sliding mode control system for robust position control of a quadrotor
In this paper, the major components of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), including the flight control system, mechanical design, as well as the embedded electronic systems are reported. The ultimate aim is to use the developed platform in nuclear environments for decommissioning applications. Due to the hazards and uncertainties present in these nuclear environments, a more basic control system may be unable to reliably control the UAV. Therefore, the main focus of this study is on the development of a robust multi-channel control system, based on sliding mode control (SMC), for nested position and attitude control of a quadrotor UAV in 3D space. The robustness of the control systems is evaluated under parameter disturbance in the form of payload uncertainties. The final developed platform shall be capable of autonomous Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM), however, this will be the subject of a separate study
