TCP over High Speed Variable Capacity Links: A Simulation Study for Bandwidth Allocation
New optical network technologies provide opportunities for fast, controllable bandwidth management. These technologies can now explicitly provide resources to data paths, creating demand driven bandwidth reservation across networks where an applications bandwidth needs can be meet almost exactly. Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode (DTM) is a gigabit network technology that provides channels with dynamically adjustable capacity. TCP is a reliable end-to-end transport protocol that adapts its rate to the available capacity. Both TCP and the DTM bandwidth can react to changes in the network load, creating a complex system with inter-dependent feedback mechanisms. The contribution of this work is an assessment of a bandwidth allocation scheme for TCP flows on variable capacity technologies. We have created a simulation environment using ns-2 and our results indicate that the allocation of bandwidth maximises TCP throughput for most flows, thus saving valuable capacity when compared to a scheme such as link over-provisioning. We highlight one situation where the allocation scheme might have some deficiencies against the static reservation of resources, and describe its causes. This type of situation warrants further investigation to understand how the algorithm can be modified to achieve performance similar to that of the fixed bandwidth case
Quality of Service over Specific Link Layers: state of the art report
The Integrated Services concept is proposed as an enhancement to the current Internet architecture, to provide a better Quality of Service (QoS) than that provided by the traditional Best-Effort service. The features of the Integrated Services are explained in this report. To support Integrated Services, certain requirements are posed on the underlying link layer. These requirements are studied by the Integrated Services over Specific Link Layers (ISSLL) IETF working group. The status of this ongoing research is reported in this document. To be more specific, the solutions to provide Integrated Services over ATM, IEEE 802 LAN technologies and low-bitrate links are evaluated in detail. The ISSLL working group has not yet studied the requirements, that are posed on the underlying link layer, when this link layer is wireless. Therefore, this state of the art report is extended with an identification of the requirements that are posed on the underlying wireless link, to provide differentiated Quality of Service

Survey of traffic control schemes and error control schemes for ATM networks
Among the techniques proposed for B-ISDN transfer mode, ATM concept is considered to be the most promising transfer technique because of its flexibility and efficiency. This paper surveys and reviews a number of topics related to ATM networks. Those topics cover congestion control, provision of multiple classes of traffic, and error control. Due to the nature of ATM networks, those issues are far more challenging than in conventional networks. Sorne of the more promising solutions to those issues are surveyed, and the corresponding results on performance are summarized. Future research problems in ATM protocol aspect are also presented

Survey of congestion control techniques for an ATM network
The emerging broadband integrated services digital network is expected to adopt ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) as the transport network. This new network must support several classes of service with varying delay and loss requirements. It must also operate with link speeds in the hundreds of megabits per second and be scalable up to potential link speeds on the order of gigabits per second. The requirements to support multiple services and high speed make the congestion control in an ATM network difficult. Generalized load sharing for packet-switching networks
In this paper, we propose a framework to study how to effectively perform load sharing in multipath communication networks. A generalized load sharing (GLS) model has been developed to conceptualize how traffic is split ideally on a set of active paths. A simple traffic splitting algorithm, called weighted fair routing (WFR), has been developed at two different granularity level, namely, the packet level, and the call level, to approximate GLS with the given routing weight vector. The packet-by-packet WFR (PWFR) mimics GLS by transmitting each packet as a whole, whereas the call-by-call WFR (CWFR) imitates GLS so that all packets belonging to a single flow are sent on the same path. We have developed some performance bounds for PWFR and found that PWFR is a deterministically fair traffic splitting algorithm. This attractive property is useful in the provision of service with guaranteed performance when multiple paths can be used simultaneously to transmit packets which belong to the same flow. Our simulation studies, based on a collection of Internet backbone traces, reveal that WFR outperforms two other traffic splitting algorithms, namely, generalized round robin routing (GRR), and probabilistic routing (PRR).
