    Emerging Works on Wireless Inductive Power Transfer: AUV Charging from Constant Current Distribution and Analysis of Controls in EV Dynamic Charging

    Wireless power transfer through inductive coupling, termed as inductive power transfer (IPT), is one of the important technologies in power electronics that enable transfer of power between entities without physical connections. While it has seen significant growth in the areas such as electric vehicle charging, phone charging and biomedical implants, its emerging applications include charging of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and dynamic charging of electric vehicles from the roadway. This dissertation addresses a few key challenges in these areas of IPT applications, paving the way for future developments. For the WPT for AUV, the recently developing sea-bed installed marine systems are targeted, which typically gets power from on-shore sources through constant dc low-current distribution. As the present underwater IPT topologies are not suitable for such applications, this dissertation proposes underwater IPT topologies to interface directly with such constant current distribution and provide a constant voltage output supply to the on-board systems inside the AUVs. The considerations for seawater losses and the small-signal models for control purposes are also addressed. Analysis and experimental results are provided for validations of the analytical designs and models. In the area of electric vehicle dynamic wireless power transfer (EV DWPT), the comparison of control performances of different coupler, compensation topologies and control implementations are addressed. The effect of communication latency on control bandwidth are also addressed. The outcomes are presented through analysis and simulations, and based on that future research recommendations are made to pave way for future commercial developments of well regulated and interoperable EV DWPT systems

    Analysis and Design of Current-fed Wireless Inductive Power Transfer Systems

    Wireless Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) technology promises a very convenient, reliable, and safe way of transferring power wirelessly. Recent research on IPT establishes its indispensable role and suitability in electric vehicle (EV) applications. Efficient design of both converters and IPT coils are essential to make this technology feasible for mass deployment. The existing research on IPT is mainly based on power converters derived from voltage-source inverter (VSI) topologies, where feasibility of current-source inverter (CSI) has received very limited attention. Considering certain limitations of voltage-fed converters, this research is focused on the concept study and feasibility analysis of current-fed power electronics for IPT systems, where the primary application is EV charging. CSI leads to parallel LC resonance in the primary side of IPT. The advantages of the parallel tank networks include lower inverter device current stress, very close to sinusoidal coil current, soft-switching of inverter devices, and natural short circuit protection during fault etc. Considering these merits, a new IPT topology is proposed in this thesis, where the inverter is full-bridge CSI and the compensations in primary and secondary sides are parallel and series types, respectively. Compared with the existing IPT topology with current-fed push-pull inverter, the proposed system does not have startup and frequency bifurcation issues. However, due to weak coupling between IPT coils, the primary side parallel capacitor experiences high voltage stress in higher power levels, and this voltage directly appears on inverter devices. To overcome this, a modified IPT topology fed from a CSI is proposed, where the primary compensation is parallel-series type and secondary compensation is series type. Detailed steady-state operation, converter design, soft-switching conditions, small-signal modelling, and closed-loop control are reported for both the topologies. To verify analytical predictions, numerical simulation is performed in PSIM 10 and experimental results obtained from a 1.6kW lab-built prototype are reported. Considering the requirement of bi-directional power flow capability to support energy injection from vehicle to grid (V2G) for future smart-grid applications, a new bidirectional IPT topology with current-fed converter is proposed. It has current-sharing feature in grid side converter and voltage doubling feature in vehicle side converter. This is the first attempt to implement bidirectional IPT with current-fed circuit and demonstrate grid to vehicle (G2V) and V2G operation. Keeping inverter output power factor lagging, ZVS turn-on of the inverter devices are always ensured irrespective of load variation. Detailed steady-state operation and converter design for both G2V and V2G modes are reported. Experimental results obtained from a 1.2kW lab-prototype are reported to verify the analysis and performances of bidirectional IPT circuit. The last part of this thesis addresses the possible improvements on reducing the number of power conversion stages to achieve higher system efficiency, compact size and reduced cost. This is usually done by using direct ac-ac converter as the primary side converter of IPT. Existing single stage IPT topologies are derived from VSI topology. From source side, these topologies have buck derived structure; therefore, none of them draw high quality current from source. In this thesis a new single stage IPT topology is proposed, which has boost derived structure and thereby capable of maintaining unity power factor at source. Dynamic load demand, source current waveshaping and effective wireless power transfer are achieved with two-loop control method. Experimental results obtained from a 1.2kW grid-connected lab-prototype are reported to justify the suitability of this single-stage IPT topology for practical use

    Bidirectional Electric Vehicles Service Integration in Smart Power Grid with Renewable Energy Resources

    As electric vehicles (EVs) become more popular, the utility companies are forced to increase power generations in the grid. However, these EVs are capable of providing power to the grid to deliver different grid ancillary services in a concept known as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and grid-to-vehicle (G2V), in which the EV can serve as a load or source at the same time. These services can provide more benefits when they are integrated with Photovoltaic (PV) generation. The proper modeling, design and control for the power conversion systems that provide the optimum integration among the EVs, PV generations and grid are investigated in this thesis. The coupling between the PV generation and integration bus is accomplished through a unidirectional converter. Precise dynamic and small-signal models for the grid-connected PV power system are developed and utilized to predict the system’s performance during the different operating conditions. An advanced intelligent maximum power point tracker based on fuzzy logic control is developed and designed using a mix between the analytical model and genetic algorithm optimization. The EV is connected to the integration bus through a bidirectional inductive wireless power transfer system (BIWPTS), which allows the EV to be charged and discharged wirelessly during the long-term parking, transient stops and movement. Accurate analytical and physics-based models for the BIWPTS are developed and utilized to forecast its performance, and novel practical limitations for the active and reactive power-flow during G2V and V2G operations are stated. A comparative and assessment analysis for the different compensation topologies in the symmetrical BIWPTS was performed based on analytical, simulation and experimental data. Also, a magnetic design optimization for the double-D power pad based on finite-element analysis is achieved. The nonlinearities in the BIWPTS due to the magnetic material and the high-frequency components are investigated rely on a physics-based co-simulation platform. Also, a novel two-layer predictive power-flow controller that manages the bidirectional power-flow between the EV and grid is developed, implemented and tested. In addition, the feasibility of deploying the quasi-dynamic wireless power transfer technology on the road to charge the EV during the transient stops at the traffic signals is proven

    Investigation of wireless power transfer-based eddy current non-destructive testing and evaluation

    PhD ThesisEddy current testing (ECT) is a non-contact inspection widely used as non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) of pipeline and rail lines due to its high sensitivity to surface and subsurface defects, cheap operating cost, tolerance to harsh environments, and capability of a customisable probe for complex geometric surfaces. However, the remote field of transmitter-receiver (Tx-Rx) ECT depends on the Tx-Rx coils gap, orientation, and lift-off distance, despite each coil responding to the effect of sample parameters according to its liftoff distance. They bring challenges to accurate defect detection and characterisation by weakening the ECT probe’s transfer response, affecting sensitivity to the defect, distorting the amplitude of the extracted features, and responding with fewer feature points at non-efficient energy transfer. Therefore, this study proposed a magnetically-coupled resonant wireless power transfer (WPT)-based ECT (WPTECT) concept to build the relationship between Tx-Rx coil at maximum energy transfer response, including shifting and splitting (resonance) frequency behaviour. The proposed WPTECT system was investigated in three different studies viz., (1) investigated the multiple resonance point features for detection and characterisation of slots on two different aluminium samples using a series-series (SS) topology of WPTECT; (2) mapped and scanned pipeline with a natural dent defect using a flexible printed coil (FPC) array probe based on the parallel-parallel (PP) topology of WPTECT; and (3) evaluated five different WPTECT topologies for optimal response and extracted features and characterised entire parameters of inclined angular Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) cracks in a rail-line material via an optimised topology. Multiple feature extraction, selection, and fusion were evaluated for the defect profile and compared in the study, unattainable by other ECT methods. The first study's contribution investigated multiple resonances and principal component analysis (PCA) features of the transfer response from scanning (eight) slots on two aluminium samples. The results have shown the potential of the multiple features for slot depth and width characterisation and demonstrated that the eddy-current density is highest at two points proportionate to the slot width. The second study's contribution provided a larger area scanning capability in a single probe amenable to complex geometrical structures like curvature surfaces. Among the extracted individual and fused features for defect reconstruction, the multi-layer feed-forward Deep learning-based multiple feature fusion has better 3D defect reconstruction, whilst the second resonances feature provided better local information than the first one for investigating pipeline dent area. The third study's contribution optimised WPTECT topology for multiple feature points capability and its optimal features extraction at the desired lift-off conditions. The PP and combined PP and SS (PS-PS) WPTECT topologies responded with multiple resonances compared to the other three topologies, with single resonance, under the same experimental situation. However, the extracted features from PS-PS topology provided the lowest sensitivity to lift-off distances and reconstructed depth, width, and inclined angle of RCF cracks with a maximum correlation, R2 -value of 96.4%, 93.1%, and 79.1%, respectively, and root-mean-square-error of 0.05mm, 0.08mm, and 6.60 , respectively. The demonstrated magnetically-coupled resonant WPTECT Tx-Rx probe characterised defects in oil and gas pipelines and rail lines through multiple features for multiple parameters information. Further work can investigate the phase of the transfer response as expected to offer robust features for material characterisation. The WPTECT system can be miniaturised using WPT IC chips as portable systems to characterise multiple layers parameters. It can further evaluate the thickness and gap between two concentric conductive tubes; pressure tube encircled by calandria tube in nuclear reactor fuel channels.PTDF Nigeri

    Testbed Design and Implementation For Wireless Power Transfer Using Software Defined Radios

    The area of wireless power transfer (WPT) dates back more than a century. This capability to transfer power without wires gives also motive for harvesting resources that have not yet been considered, such as the RF signals that cellular networks employ to send information. Only a while ago the research in the WPT field was focused on improving the elements in the power transmission chains separately. However, in recent years, such closed-loop schemes have emerged that have the potential to improve the efficiency of the entire system by adapting key elements in the chain together, such as the transmitted waveform and the rectenna performance. The scope of the thesis aims to contribute to the ultimate objective of merging information and power transfer in a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer/transmission (SWIPT) network. The main objective of this thesis is to design and implement a testbed for research on WPT and SWIPT. A closed-loop system is implemented for future scientific experiments for broadcasting a given radio signal and at the same time measuring the total power that an energy receiver will harvest from the transmission. The main element of the testbed is a computer from which master program controlling the transmission, the synchronization, and reading of the harvested voltage. The master program is written in C++ language and is designed to transmit with a USRP and receive voltage readings from the harvesting energy receivers that consist of RF-to-DC converter, ADC and Arduino microcontroller. Results show that the implemented testbed works as planned, and the master program can perform adaptive algorithms. Furthermore, the testbed can be used for experiments for any given waveform meant for communications, WPT, and SWIPT

    RF Wireless Power and Data Transfer : Experiment-driven Analysis and Waveform Design

    The brisk deployment of the fifth generation (5G) mobile technology across the globe has accelerated the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) networks. While 5G provides the necessary bandwidth and latency to connect the trillions of IoT sensors to the internet, the challenge of powering such a multitude of sensors with a replenishable energy source remains. Far-field radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising technology to address this issue. Conventionally, the RF WPT concepts have been deemed inadequate to deliver wireless power due to the undeniably huge over-the-air propagation losses. Nonetheless, the radical decline in the energy requirement of simple sensing and computing devices over the last few decades has rekindled the interest in RF WPT as a feasible solution for wireless power delivery to IoT sensors. The primary goal in any RF WPT system is to maximize the harvested direct current (DC) power from the minuscule incident RF power. As a result, optimizing the receiver power efficiency is pivotal for an RF WPT system. On similar lines, it is essential to minimize the power losses at the transmitter in order to achieve a sustainable and economically viable RF WPT system. In this regard, this thesis explores the system-level study of an RF WPT system using a digital radio transmitter for applications where alternative analog transmit circuits are impractical. A prototype test-bed comprising low-cost software-defined radio (SDR) transmitter and an off-the-shelf RF energy-harvesting (EH) receiver is developed to experimentally analyze the impact of clipping and nonlinear amplification at the digital radio transmitter on digital baseband waveform. The use of an SDR allows leveraging the test-bed for the research on RF simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT); the true potential of this technology can be realized by utilizing the RF spectrum to transport data and power together. The experimental results indicate that a digital radio severely distorts high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) signals, thereby reducing their average output power and rendering them futile for RF WPT. On similar lines, another test-bed is developed to assess the impact of different waveforms, input impedance mismatch, incident RF power, and load on the receiver power efficiency of an RF WPT system. The experimental results provide the foundation and notion to develop a novel mathematical model for an RF EH receiver. The parametric model relates the harvested DC power to the power distribution of the envelope signal of the incident waveform, which is characterized by the amplitude, phase and frequency of the baseband waveform. The novel receiver model is independent of the receiver circuit’s matching network, rectifier configuration, number of diodes, load as well as input frequency. The efficacy of the model in accurately predicting the output DC power for any given power-level distribution is verified experimentally. Since the novel receiver model associates the output DC power to the parameters of the incident waveform, it is further leveraged to design optimal transmit wave-forms for RF WPT and SWIPT. The optimization problem reveals that a constant envelope signal with varying duty cycle is optimal for maximizing the harvested DC power. Consequently, a pulsed RF waveform is optimal for RF WPT, whereas a continuous phase modulated pulsed RF signal is suitable for RF SWIPT. The superior WPT performance of pulsed RF waveforms over multisine signals is demonstrated experimentally. Similarly, the pulsed phase-shift keying (PSK) signals exhibit superior receiver power efficiency than other communication signals. Nonetheless, varying the duty-cycle of pulsed PSK waveform leads to an efficiency—throughput trade-off in RF SWIPT. Finally, the SDR test-bed is used to evaluate the overall end-to-end power efficiency of different digital baseband waveforms through wireless measurements. The results indicate a 4-PSK modulated signal to be suitable for RF WPT considering the overall power efficiency of the system. The corresponding transmitter, channel and receiver power efficiencies are evaluated as well. The results demonstrate the transmitter power efficiency to be lower than the receiver power efficiency

    The fifth generation (5G) mobile networks are envisaged to enable a plethora of breakthrough advancements in wireless technologies, providing support of a diverse set of services over a single platform. While the deployment of 5G systems is scaling up globally, it is time to look ahead for beyond 5G systems. This is driven by the emerging societal trends, calling for fully automated systems and intelligent services supported by extended reality and haptics communications. To accommodate the stringent requirements of their prospective applications, which are data-driven and defined by extremely low-latency, ultra-reliable, fast and seamless wireless connectivity, research initiatives are currently focusing on a progressive roadmap towards the sixth generation (6G) networks. In this article, we shed light on some of the major enabling technologies for 6G, which are expected to revolutionize the fundamental architectures of cellular networks and provide multiple homogeneous artificial intelligence-empowered services, including distributed communications, control, computing, sensing, and energy, from its core to its end nodes. Particularly, this paper aims to answer several 6G framework related questions: What are the driving forces for the development of 6G? How will the enabling technologies of 6G differ from those in 5G? What kind of applications and interactions will they support which would not be supported by 5G? We address these questions by presenting a profound study of the 6G vision and outlining five of its disruptive technologies, i.e., terahertz communications, programmable metasurfaces, drone-based communications, backscatter communications and tactile internet, as well as their potential applications. Then, by leveraging the state-of-the-art literature surveyed for each technology, we discuss their requirements, key challenges, and open research problems
