    Design and validation of a wireless Body Sensor Network for integrated EEG and HD-sEMG acquisitions

    Sensorimotor integration is the process through which the human brain plans the motor program execution according to external sources. Within this context, corticomuscular and corticokinematic coherence analyses are common methods to investigate the mechanism underlying the central control of muscle activation. This requires the synchronous acquisition of several physiological signals, including EEG and sEMG. Nevertheless, physical constraints of the current, mostly wired, technologies limit their application in dynamic and naturalistic contexts. In fact, although many efforts were made in the development of biomedical instrumentation for EEG and HD-sEMG signal acquisition, the need for an integrated wireless system is emerging. We hereby describe the design and validation of a new fully wireless body sensor network for the integrated acquisition of EEG and HD-sEMG signals. This Body Sensor Network is composed of wireless bio-signal acquisition modules, named sensor units, and a set of synchronization modules used as a general-purpose system for time-locked recordings. The system was characterized in terms of accuracy of the synchronization and quality of the collected signals. An in-depth characterization of the entire system and an end-to-end comparison of the wireless EEG sensor unit with a wired benchmark EEG device were performed.     The primary objective of this research work is the development of a low power single-lead ECG analog front-end (AFE) architecture which includes acquisition, digitization, process aware efficient gain and frequency control mechanism and a low complexity classifier for the detecting asystole, extreme bardycardia and tachycardia. Recent research on ECG recording systems focuses on the design of a compact single-lead wearable/portable devices with ultra-low-power consumption and in-built hardware for diagnosis and prognosis. Since, the amplitude of the ECG signal varies from hundreds of µV to a few mV, and has a bandwidth of DC to 250 Hz, conventional front-ends use an instrument amplifier followed by a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) to amplify the input ECG signal appropriately. This work presents an mixed signal ECG fronted with an ultra-low power two-stage capacitive-coupled signal conditioning circuit (or an AFE), providing programmable amplification along with tunable 2nd order high pass and lowpass filter characteristics. In the contemporary state-of-the-art ECG recording systems, the gain of the amplifier is controlled by external digital control pins which are in turn dynamically controlled through a DSP. Therefore, an efficient automatic gain control mechanism with minimal area overhead and consuming power in the order of nano watts only. The AGC turns the subsequent ADC on only after output of the PGA (or input of the ADC) reaches a level for which the ADC achieves maximum signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR), hence saving considerable startup power and avoiding the use of DSP. Further, in any practical filter design, the low pass cut-off frequency is prone to deviate from its nominal value across process and temperature variations. Therefore, post-fabrication calibration is essential, before the signal is fed to an ADC, to minimize this deviation, prevent signal degradation due to aliasing of higher frequencies into the bandwidth for classification of ECG signals, to switch to low resolution processing, hence saving power and enhances battery lifetime. Another short-coming noticed in the literature published so far is that the classification algorithm is implemented in digital domain, which turns out to be a power hungry approach. Moreover, Although analog domain implementations of QRS complexes detection schemes have been reported, they employ an external micro-controller to determine the threshold voltage. In this regard, finally a power-efficient low complexity CMOS fully analog classifier architecture and a heart rate estimator is added to the above scheme. It reduces the overall system power consumption by reducing the computational burden on the DSP. The complete proposed scheme consists of (i) an ultra-low power QRS complex detection circuit using an autonomous dynamic threshold voltage, hence discarding the need of any external microcontroller/DSP and calibration (ii) a power efficient analog classifier for the detection of three critical alarm types viz. asystole, extreme bradycardia and tachycardia. Additionally, a heart rate estimator that provides the number of QRS complexes within a period of one minute for cardiac rhythm (CR) and heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. The complete proposed architecture is implemented in UMC 0.18 µm CMOS technology with 1.8 V supply. The functionality of each of the individual blocks are successfully validated using postextraction process corner simulations and through real ECG test signals taken from the PhysioNet database.     Ultra low power wearable sleep diagnostic systems

    Sleep disorders are studied using sleep study systems called Polysomnography that records several biophysical parameters during sleep. However, these are bulky and are typically located in a medical facility where patient monitoring is costly and quite inefficient. Home-based portable systems solve these problems to an extent but they record only a minimal number of channels due to limited battery life. To surmount this, wearable sleep system are desired which need to be unobtrusive and have long battery life. In this thesis, a novel sleep system architecture is presented that enables the design of an ultra low power sleep diagnostic system. This architecture is capable of extending the recording time to 120 hours in a wearable system which is an order of magnitude improvement over commercial wearable systems that record for about 12 hours. This architecture has in effect reduced the average power consumption of 5-6 mW per channel to less than 500 uW per channel. This has been achieved by eliminating sampled data architecture, reducing the wireless transmission rate and by moving the sleep scoring to the sensors. Further, ultra low power instrumentation amplifiers have been designed to operate in weak inversion region to support this architecture. A 40 dB chopper-stabilised low power instrumentation amplifiers to process EEG were designed and tested to operate from 1.0 V consuming just 3.1 uW for peak mode operation with DC servo loop. A 50 dB non-EEG amplifier continuous-time bandpass amplifier with a consumption of 400 nW was also fabricated and tested. Both the amplifiers achieved a high CMRR and impedance that are critical for wearable systems. Combining these amplifiers with the novel architecture enables the design of an ultra low power sleep recording system. This reduces the size of the battery required and hence enables a truly wearable system.Open Acces

    CMOS Hyperbolic Sine ELIN filters for low/audio frequency biomedical applications

    Hyperbolic-Sine (Sinh) filters form a subclass of Externally-Linear-Internally-Non- Linear (ELIN) systems. They can handle large-signals in a low power environment under half the capacitor area required by the more popular ELIN Log-domain filters. Their inherent class-AB nature stems from the odd property of the sinh function at the heart of their companding operation. Despite this early realisation, the Sinh filtering paradigm has not attracted the interest it deserves to date probably due to its mathematical and circuit-level complexity. This Thesis presents an overview of the CMOS weak inversion Sinh filtering paradigm and explains how biomedical systems of low- to audio-frequency range could benefit from it. Its dual scope is to: consolidate the theory behind the synthesis and design of high order Sinh continuous–time filters and more importantly to confirm their micro-power consumption and 100+ dB of DR through measured results presented for the first time. Novel high order Sinh topologies are designed by means of a systematic mathematical framework introduced. They employ a recently proposed CMOS Sinh integrator comprising only p-type devices in its translinear loops. The performance of the high order topologies is evaluated both solely and in comparison with their Log domain counterparts. A 5th order Sinh Chebyshev low pass filter is compared head-to-head with a corresponding and also novel Log domain class-AB topology, confirming that Sinh filters constitute a solution of equally high DR (100+ dB) with half the capacitor area at the expense of higher complexity and power consumption. The theoretical findings are validated by means of measured results from an 8th order notch filter for 50/60Hz noise fabricated in a 0.35μm CMOS technology. Measured results confirm a DR of 102dB, a moderate SNR of ~60dB and 74μW power consumption from 2V power supply

    Modern robotic technologies have enabled robots to operate in a variety of unstructured and dynamically-changing environments, in addition to traditional structured environments. Robots have, thus, become an important element in our everyday lives. One key approach to develop such intelligent and autonomous robots is to draw inspiration from biological systems. Biological structure, mechanisms, and underlying principles have the potential to provide new ideas to support the improvement of conventional robotic designs and control. Such biological principles usually originate from animal or even plant models, for robots, which can sense, think, walk, swim, crawl, jump or even fly. Thus, it is believed that these bio-inspired methods are becoming increasingly important in the face of complex applications. Bio-inspired robotics is leading to the study of innovative structures and computing with sensory–motor coordination and learning to achieve intelligence, flexibility, stability, and adaptation for emergent robotic applications, such as manipulation, learning, and control. This Special Issue invites original papers of innovative ideas and concepts, new discoveries and improvements, and novel applications and business models relevant to the selected topics of ``Bio-Inspired Robotics''. Bio-Inspired Robotics is a broad topic and an ongoing expanding field. This Special Issue collates 30 papers that address some of the important challenges and opportunities in this broad and expanding field

    Evaluating EEG–EMG Fusion-Based Classification as a Method for Improving Control of Wearable Robotic Devices for Upper-Limb Rehabilitation

    Musculoskeletal disorders are the biggest cause of disability worldwide, and wearable mechatronic rehabilitation devices have been proposed for treatment. However, before widespread adoption, improvements in user control and system adaptability are required. User intention should be detected intuitively, and user-induced changes in system dynamics should be unobtrusively identified and corrected. Developments often focus on model-dependent nonlinear control theory, which is challenging to implement for wearable devices. One alternative is to incorporate bioelectrical signal-based machine learning into the system, allowing for simpler controller designs to be augmented by supplemental brain (electroencephalography/EEG) and muscle (electromyography/EMG) information. To extract user intention better, sensor fusion techniques have been proposed to combine EEG and EMG; however, further development is required to enhance the capabilities of EEG–EMG fusion beyond basic motion classification. To this end, the goals of this thesis were to investigate expanded methods of EEG–EMG fusion and to develop a novel control system based on the incorporation of EEG–EMG fusion classifiers. A dataset of EEG and EMG signals were collected during dynamic elbow flexion–extension motions and used to develop EEG–EMG fusion models to classify task weight, as well as motion intention. A variety of fusion methods were investigated, such as a Weighted Average decision-level fusion (83.01 ± 6.04% accuracy) and Convolutional Neural Network-based input-level fusion (81.57 ± 7.11% accuracy), demonstrating that EEG–EMG fusion can classify more indirect tasks. A novel control system, referred to as a Task Weight Selective Controller (TWSC), was implemented using a Gain Scheduling-based approach, dictated by external load estimations from an EEG–EMG fusion classifier. To improve system stability, classifier prediction debouncing was also proposed to reduce misclassifications through filtering. Performance of the TWSC was evaluated using a developed upper-limb brace simulator. Due to simulator limitations, no significant difference in error was observed between the TWSC and PID control. However, results did demonstrate the feasibility of prediction debouncing, showing it provided smoother device motion. Continued development of the TWSC, and EEG–EMG fusion techniques will ultimately result in wearable devices that are able to adapt to changing loads more effectively, serving to improve the user experience during operation
