    Low-latency, query-driven analytics over voluminous multidimensional, spatiotemporal datasets

    2017 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.Ubiquitous data collection from sources such as remote sensing equipment, networked observational devices, location-based services, and sales tracking has led to the accumulation of voluminous datasets; IDC projects that by 2020 we will generate 40 zettabytes of data per year, while Gartner and ABI estimate 20-35 billion new devices will be connected to the Internet in the same time frame. The storage and processing requirements of these datasets far exceed the capabilities of modern computing hardware, which has led to the development of distributed storage frameworks that can scale out by assimilating more computing resources as necessary. While challenging in its own right, storing and managing voluminous datasets is only the precursor to a broader field of study: extracting knowledge, insights, and relationships from the underlying datasets. The basic building block of this knowledge discovery process is analytic queries, encompassing both query instrumentation and evaluation. This dissertation is centered around query-driven exploratory and predictive analytics over voluminous, multidimensional datasets. Both of these types of analysis represent a higher-level abstraction over classical query models; rather than indexing every discrete value for subsequent retrieval, our framework autonomously learns the relationships and interactions between dimensions in the dataset (including time series and geospatial aspects), and makes the information readily available to users. This functionality includes statistical synopses, correlation analysis, hypothesis testing, probabilistic structures, and predictive models that not only enable the discovery of nuanced relationships between dimensions, but also allow future events and trends to be predicted. This requires specialized data structures and partitioning algorithms, along with adaptive reductions in the search space and management of the inherent trade-off between timeliness and accuracy. The algorithms presented in this dissertation were evaluated empirically on real-world geospatial time-series datasets in a production environment, and are broadly applicable across other storage frameworks

    A model-based approach for automatic recovery from memory leaks in enterprise applications

    Large-scale distributed computing systems such as data centers are hosted on heterogeneous and networked servers that execute in a dynamic and uncertain operating environment, caused by factors such as time-varying user workload and various failures. Therefore, achieving stringent quality-of-service goals is a challenging task, requiring a comprehensive approach to performance control, fault diagnosis, and failure recovery. This work presents a model-based approach for fault management, which integrates limited lookahead control (LLC), diagnosis, and fault-tolerance concepts that: (1) enables systems to adapt to environment variations, (2) maintains the availability and reliability of the system, (3) facilitates system recovery from failures. We focused on memory leak errors in this thesis. A characterization function is designed to detect memory leaks. Then, a LLC is applied to enable the computing system to adapt efficiently to variations in the workload, and to enable the system recover from memory leaks and maintain functionality

    Tuning the Level of Concurrency in Software Transactional Memory: An Overview of Recent Analytical, Machine Learning and Mixed Approaches

    Synchronization transparency offered by Software Transactional Memory (STM) must not come at the expense of run-time efficiency, thus demanding from the STM-designer the inclusion of mechanisms properly oriented to performance and other quality indexes. Particularly, one core issue to cope with in STM is related to exploiting parallelism while also avoiding thrashing phenomena due to excessive transaction rollbacks, caused by excessively high levels of contention on logical resources, namely concurrently accessed data portions. A means to address run-time efficiency consists in dynamically determining the best-suited level of concurrency (number of threads) to be employed for running the application (or specific application phases) on top of the STM layer. For too low levels of concurrency, parallelism can be hampered. Conversely, over-dimensioning the concurrency level may give rise to the aforementioned thrashing phenomena caused by excessive data contention—an aspect which has reflections also on the side of reduced energy-efficiency. In this chapter we overview a set of recent techniques aimed at building “application-specific” performance models that can be exploited to dynamically tune the level of concurrency to the best-suited value. Although they share some base concepts while modeling the system performance vs the degree of concurrency, these techniques rely on disparate methods, such as machine learning or analytic methods (or combinations of the two), and achieve different tradeoffs in terms of the relation between the precision of the performance model and the latency for model instantiation. Implications of the different tradeoffs in real-life scenarios are also discussed

This corpus is used to test a method for the detection of hidden intertextuality (commonly named "plagiarism"). The intertextual distance, combined with the sliding window and with various classification techniques, identifies these duplications with a very low risk of error. These experiments also show that several factors blur the identity of the scientific author, including variable group authorship and the high levels of intertextuality accepted, and sometimes desired, in scientific papers on the same topic

    A Survey and Taxonomy of Self-Aware and Self-Adaptive Cloud Autoscaling Systems

    Autoscaling system can reconfigure cloud-based services and applications, through various configurations of cloud software and provisions of hardware resources, to adapt to the changing environment at runtime. Such a behavior offers the foundation for achieving elasticity in a modern cloud computing paradigm. Given the dynamic and uncertain nature of the shared cloud infrastructure, the cloud autoscaling system has been engineered as one of the most complex, sophisticated, and intelligent artifacts created by humans, aiming to achieve self-aware, self-adaptive, and dependable runtime scaling. Yet the existing Self-aware and Self-adaptive Cloud Autoscaling System (SSCAS) is not at a state where it can be reliably exploited in the cloud. In this article, we survey the state-of-the-art research studies on SSCAS and provide a comprehensive taxonomy for this field. We present detailed analysis of the results and provide insights on open challenges, as well as the promising directions that are worth investigated in the future work of this area of research. Our survey and taxonomy contribute to the fundamentals of engineering more intelligent autoscaling systems in the cloud

    Data-Driven Methods for Data Center Operations Support

    During the last decade, cloud technologies have been evolving at an impressive pace, such that we are now living in a cloud-native era where developers can leverage on an unprecedented landscape of (possibly managed) services for orchestration, compute, storage, load-balancing, monitoring, etc. The possibility to have on-demand access to a diverse set of configurable virtualized resources allows for building more elastic, flexible and highly-resilient distributed applications. Behind the scenes, cloud providers sustain the heavy burden of maintaining the underlying infrastructures, consisting in large-scale distributed systems, partitioned and replicated among many geographically dislocated data centers to guarantee scalability, robustness to failures, high availability and low latency. The larger the scale, the more cloud providers have to deal with complex interactions among the various components, such that monitoring, diagnosing and troubleshooting issues become incredibly daunting tasks. To keep up with these challenges, development and operations practices have undergone significant transformations, especially in terms of improving the automations that make releasing new software, and responding to unforeseen issues, faster and sustainable at scale. The resulting paradigm is nowadays referred to as DevOps. However, while such automations can be very sophisticated, traditional DevOps practices fundamentally rely on reactive mechanisms, that typically require careful manual tuning and supervision from human experts. To minimize the risk of outages—and the related costs—it is crucial to provide DevOps teams with suitable tools that can enable a proactive approach to data center operations. This work presents a comprehensive data-driven framework to address the most relevant problems that can be experienced in large-scale distributed cloud infrastructures. These environments are indeed characterized by a very large availability of diverse data, collected at each level of the stack, such as: time-series (e.g., physical host measurements, virtual machine or container metrics, networking components logs, application KPIs); graphs (e.g., network topologies, fault graphs reporting dependencies among hardware and software components, performance issues propagation networks); and text (e.g., source code, system logs, version control system history, code review feedbacks). Such data are also typically updated with relatively high frequency, and subject to distribution drifts caused by continuous configuration changes to the underlying infrastructure. In such a highly dynamic scenario, traditional model-driven approaches alone may be inadequate at capturing the complexity of the interactions among system components. DevOps teams would certainly benefit from having robust data-driven methods to support their decisions based on historical information. For instance, effective anomaly detection capabilities may also help in conducting more precise and efficient root-cause analysis. Also, leveraging on accurate forecasting and intelligent control strategies would improve resource management. Given their ability to deal with high-dimensional, complex data, Deep Learning-based methods are the most straightforward option for the realization of the aforementioned support tools. On the other hand, because of their complexity, this kind of models often requires huge processing power, and suitable hardware, to be operated effectively at scale. These aspects must be carefully addressed when applying such methods in the context of data center operations. Automated operations approaches must be dependable and cost-efficient, not to degrade the services they are built to improve. i

    Visual servoing is a well-known approach to guide robots using visual information. Image processing, robotics, and control theory are combined in order to control the motion of a robot depending on the visual information extracted from the images captured by one or several cameras. With respect to vision issues, a number of issues are currently being addressed by ongoing research, such as the use of different types of image features (or different types of cameras such as RGBD cameras), image processing at high velocity, and convergence properties. As shown in this book, the use of new control schemes allows the system to behave more robustly, efficiently, or compliantly, with fewer delays. Related issues such as optimal and robust approaches, direct control, path tracking, or sensor fusion are also addressed. Additionally, we can currently find visual servoing systems being applied in a number of different domains. This book considers various aspects of visual servoing systems, such as the design of new strategies for their application to parallel robots, mobile manipulators, teleoperation, and the application of this type of control system in new areas
