Dynamic models for production control and scheduling.

    Get PDF
Agility may be an important competitive advantage in many markets. In order to achieve it, the dynamics of the manufacturing systems must be considered. Control theory supports the development of dynamic models for production and inventory control. This paper discusses some dynamic models of production control specifically applied to scheduling \ud and shop floor control. A comparative and critical analysis of the models is presented and directions for future works are provided

New Approaches in Automation and Robotics

    Get PDF
The book New Approaches in Automation and Robotics offers in 22 chapters a collection of recent developments in automation, robotics as well as control theory. It is dedicated to researchers in science and industry, students, and practicing engineers, who wish to update and enhance their knowledge on modern methods and innovative applications. The authors and editor of this book wish to motivate people, especially under-graduate students, to get involved with the interesting field of robotics and mechatronics. We hope that the ideas and concepts presented in this book are useful for your own work and could contribute to problem solving in similar applications as well. It is clear, however, that the wide area of automation and robotics can only be highlighted at several spots but not completely covered by a single book

Decentralized Robust Capacity Control of Job Shop Systems with Reconfigurable Machine Tools

    Get PDF
Manufacturing companies are confronted with various challenges from the perspective of customers individual requirements concerning variations of types of products, quantities and delivery dates. This renders the manufacturing process to be more dynamic and complex, which may result in bottlenecks and unbalanced capacity distributions. To cope with these problems, capacity adjustment is an effective approach to balance capacity and load for short or medium term fluctuations on the operational layer. Particularly, new technologies and algorithms need to be developed for the implementation of capacity adjustment. Reconfigurable machine tools (RMTs) and operator-based robust right coprime factorization (RRCF) provide an opportunity for a new capacity control strategy. Therefore, the main purpose of the research is to develop an effective machinery-oriented capacity control strategy by incorporating RMTs and RRCF for a job shop system to deal with volatile customer demands

Modeling and analysis of semiconductor manufacturing processes using petri nets

    Get PDF
This thesis addresses the issues in modeling and analysis of multichip module (MCM) manufacturing processes using Petri nets. Building such graphical and mathematical models is a crucial step to understand MCM technologies and to enhance their application scope. In this thesis, the application of Petri nets is presented with top-down and bottom-up approaches. The theory of Petri nets is summarized with its basic notations and properties at first. After that, the capability of calculating and analyzing Petri nets with deterministic timing information is extended to meet the requirements of the MCM models. Then, using top-down refining and system decomposition, MCM models are built from an abstract point to concrete systems with timing information. In this process, reduction theory based on a multiple-input-single-output modules for deterministic Petri nets is applied to analyze the cycle time of Petri net models. Besides, this thesis is of significance in its use of the reduction theory which is derived for timed marked graphs - an important class of Petri nets

Advanced Control and Estimation Concepts, and New Hardware Topologies for Future Mobility

    Get PDF
According to the National Research Council, the use of embedded systems throughout society could well overtake previous milestones in the information revolution. Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of electronic, mechanical engineering, controls, software and systems engineering in the design of processes and products. Mechatronic systems put “intelligence” into physical systems. Embedded sensors/actuators/processors are integral parts of mechatronic systems. The implementation of mechatronic systems is consistently on the rise. However, manufacturers are working hard to reduce the implementation cost of these systems while trying avoid compromising product quality. One way of addressing these conflicting objectives is through new automatic control methods, virtual sensing/estimation, and new innovative hardware topologies
