    Network correlated data gathering with explicit communication: NP-completeness and algorithms

    We consider the problem of correlated data gathering by a network with a sink node and a tree-based communication structure, where the goal is to minimize the total transmission cost of transporting the information collected by the nodes, to the sink node. For source coding of correlated data, we consider a joint entropy-based coding model with explicit communication where coding is simple and the transmission structure optimization is difficult. We first formulate the optimization problem definition in the general case and then we study further a network setting where the entropy conditioning at nodes does not depend on the amount of side information, but only on its availability. We prove that even in this simple case, the optimization problem is NP-hard. We propose some efficient, scalable, and distributed heuristic approximation algorithms for solving this problem and show by numerical simulations that the total transmission cost can be significantly improved over direct transmission or the shortest path tree.     Joint multicast routing and channel assignment in multiradio multichannel wireless mesh networks using simulated annealing

    This is the post-print version of the article - Copyright @ 2008 Springer-VerlagThis paper proposes a simulated annealing (SA) algorithm based optimization approach to search a minimum-interference multicast tree which satisfies the end-to-end delay constraint and optimizes the usage of the scarce radio network resource in wireless mesh networks. In the proposed SA multicast algorithm, the path-oriented encoding method is adopted and each candidate solution is represented by a tree data structure (i.e., a set of paths). Since we anticipate the multicast trees on which the minimum-interference channel assignment can be produced, a fitness function that returns the total channel conflict is devised. The techniques for controlling the annealing process are well developed. A simple yet effective channel assignment algorithm is proposed to reduce the channel conflict. Simulation results show that the proposed SA based multicast algorithm can produce the multicast trees which have better performance in terms of both the total channel conflict and the tree cost than that of a well known multicast algorithm in wireless mesh networks.This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant EP/E060722/1

    Joint QoS multicast routing and channel assignment in multiradio multichannel wireless mesh networks using intelligent computational methods

It is proved to be a NP-hard problem. Previous work separates the multicast tree construction from the channel assignment. Therefore they bear severe drawback, that is, channel assignment cannot work well with the determined multicast tree. In this paper, we integrate them together and solve it by intelligent computational methods. First, we develop a unified framework which consists of the problem formulation, the solution representation, the fitness function, and the channel assignment algorithm. Then, we propose three separate algorithms based on three representative intelligent computational methods (i.e., genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and tabu search). These three algorithms aim to search minimum-interference multicast trees which also satisfy the end-to-end delay constraint and optimize the usage of the scarce radio network resource in wireless mesh networks. To achieve this goal, the optimization techniques based on state of the art genetic algorithm and the techniques to control the annealing process and the tabu search procedure are well developed separately. Simulation results show that the proposed three intelligent computational methods based multicast algorithms all achieve better performance in terms of both the total channel conflict and the tree cost than those comparative references.This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant EP/E060722/1

    Novel Internet of Vehicles Approaches for Smart Cities

    Smart cities are the domain where many electronic devices and sensors transmit data via the Internet of Vehicles concept. The purpose of deploying many sensors in cities is to provide an intelligent environment and a good quality of life. However, different challenges still appear in smart cities such as vehicular traffic congestion, air pollution, and wireless channel communication aspects. Therefore, in order to address these challenges, this thesis develops approaches for vehicular routing, wireless channel congestion alleviation, and traffic estimation. A new traffic congestion avoidance approach has been developed in this thesis based on the simulated annealing and TOPSIS cost function. This approach utilizes data such as the traffic average travel speed from the Internet of Vehicles. Simulation results show that the developed approach improves the traffic performance for the Sheffield the scenario in the presence of congestion by an overall average of 19.22% in terms of travel time, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as compared to other algorithms. In contrast, transmitting a large amount of data among the sensors leads to a wireless channel congestion problem. This affects the accuracy of transmitted information due to the packets loss and delays time. This thesis proposes two approaches based on a non-cooperative game theory to alleviate the channel congestion problem. Therefore, the congestion control problem is formulated as a non-cooperative game. A proof of the existence of a unique Nash equilibrium is given. The performance of the proposed approaches is evaluated on the highway and urban testing scenarios. This thesis also addresses the problem of missing data when sensors are not available or when the Internet of Vehicles connection fails to provide measurements in smart cities. Two approaches based on l1 norm minimization and a relevance vector machine type optimization are proposed. The performance of the developed approaches has been tested involving simulated and real data scenarios

    Acoustic Sensor Planning for Gunshot Location in National Parks: A Pareto Front Approach

    In this paper, we propose a solution for gunshot location in national parks. In Spain there are agencies such as SEPRONA that fight against poaching with considerable success. The DiANa project, which is endorsed by Cabaneros National Park and the SEPRONA service, proposes a system to automatically detect and locate gunshots. This work presents its technical aspects related to network design and planning. The system consists of a network of acoustic sensors that locate gunshots by hyperbolic multi-lateration estimation. The differences in sound time arrivals allow the computation of a low error estimator of gunshot location. The accuracy of this method depends on tight sensor clock synchronization, which an ad-hoc time synchronization protocol provides. On the other hand, since the areas under surveillance are wide, and electric power is scarce, it is necessary to maximize detection coverage and minimize system cost at the same time. Therefore, sensor network planning has two targets, i.e., coverage and cost. We model planning as an unconstrained problem with two objective functions. We determine a set of candidate solutions of interest by combining a derivative-free descent method we have recently proposed with a Pareto front approach. The results are clearly superior to random seeding in a realistic simulation scenario

    An Improved Simulated Annealing Technique for Enhanced Mobility in Smart Cities

    Vehicular traffic congestion is a significant problem that arises in many cities. This is due to the increasing number of vehicles that are driving on city roads of limited capacity. The vehicular congestion significantly impacts travel distance, travel time, fuel consumption and air pollution. Avoidance of traffic congestion and providing drivers with optimal paths are not trivial tasks. The key contribution of this work consists of the developed approach for dynamic calculation of optimal traffic routes. Two attributes (the average travel speed of the traffic and the roads’ length) are utilized by the proposed method to find the optimal paths. The average travel speed values can be obtained from the sensors deployed in smart cities and communicated to vehicles via the Internet of Vehicles and roadside communication units. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared to three other algorithms: the simulated annealing weighted sum, the simulated annealing technique for order preference by similarity to the ideal solution and the Dijkstra algorithm. The weighted sum and technique for order preference by similarity to the ideal solution methods are used to formulate different attributes in the simulated annealing cost function. According to the Sheffield scenario, simulation results show that the improved simulated annealing technique for order preference by similarity to the ideal solution method improves the traffic performance in the presence of congestion by an overall average of 19.22% in terms of travel time, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as compared to other algorithms; also, similar performance patterns were achieved for the Birmingham test scenario
