From Big Data to Big Displays: High-Performance Visualization at Blue Brain
Blue Brain has pushed high-performance visualization (HPV) to complement its
HPC strategy since its inception in 2007. In 2011, this strategy has been
accelerated to develop innovative visualization solutions through increased
funding and strategic partnerships with other research institutions.
We present the key elements of this HPV ecosystem, which integrates C++
visualization applications with novel collaborative display systems. We
motivate how our strategy of transforming visualization engines into services
enables a variety of use cases, not only for the integration with high-fidelity
displays, but also to build service oriented architectures, to link into web

Future Directions in Astronomy Visualisation
Despite the large budgets spent annually on astronomical research equipment
such as telescopes, instruments and supercomputers, the general trend is to
analyse and view the resulting datasets using small, two-dimensional displays.
We report here on alternative advanced image displays, with an emphasis on
displays that we have constructed, including stereoscopic projection, multiple
projector tiled displays and a digital dome. These displays can provide
astronomers with new ways of exploring the terabyte and petabyte datasets that
are now regularly being produced from all-sky surveys, high-resolution computer
simulations, and Virtual Observatory projects. We also present a summary of the
Advanced Image Displays for Astronomy (AIDA) survey which we conducted from
March-May 2005, in order to raise some issues pertitent to the current and

Perception Enhanced Virtual Environment for Maritime Applications
This paper presents the development of a realtimeperception enhanced virtual environment for maritimeapplications which simulates real-time six degrees of freedomship motions (pitch, heave, roll, surge, sway, and yaw) underuser interactions, environmental conditions and various threatscenarios. This simulation system consists of reliable shipmotion prediction system and perception enhanced immersivevirtual environment with greater ecological validity. Thisvirtual environment supports multiple-display viewing that cangreatly enhance user perception and we developed the ecologicalenvironment for strong sensation of immersion. In this virtualenvironment it is possible to incorporate real world ships,geographical sceneries, several environmental conditions andwide range of visibility and illumination effects. This system canbe used for both entertainment and educational applications suchas consol level computer games, teaching & learning applicationsand various virtual reality applications. 3D-Stereoscopic Immersive Analytics Projects at Monash University and University of Konstanz
Immersive Analytics investigates how novel interaction and display technologies may support analytical reasoning and decision making. The Immersive Analytics initiative of Monash University started early 2014. Over the last few years, a number of projects have been developed or extended in this context to meet the requirements of semi- or full-immersive stereoscopic environments. Different technologies are used for this purpose: CAVE2™ (a 330 degree large-scale visualization environment which can be used for educative and scientific group presentations, analyses and discussions), stereoscopic Powerwalls (miniCAVEs, representing a segment of the CAVE2 and used for development and communication), Fishtanks, and/or HMDs (such as Oculus, VIVE, and mobile HMD approaches). Apart from CAVE2™ all systems are or will be employed on both the Monash University and the University of Konstanz side, especially to investigate collaborative Immersive Analytics. In addition, sensiLab extends most of the previous approaches by involving all senses, 3D visualization is combined with multi-sensory feedback, 3D printing, robotics in a scientific-artistic-creative environment
Venus Quadrangle Geological Mapping: Use of Geoscience Data Visualization Systems in Mapping and Training
We are currently investigating new technological developments in computer visualization and analysis in order to assess their importance and utility in planetary geological analysis and mapping [1,2]. Last year we reported on the range of technologies available and on our application of these to various problems in planetary mapping [3]. In this contribution we focus on the application of these techniques and tools to Venus geological mapping at the 1:5M quadrangle scale. In our current Venus mapping projects we have utilized and tested the various platforms to understand their capabilities and assess their usefulness in defining units, establishing stratigraphic relationships, mapping structures, reaching consensus on interpretations and producing map products. We are specifically assessing how computer visualization display qualities (e.g., level of immersion, stereoscopic vs. monoscopic viewing, field of view, large vs. small display size, etc.) influence performance on scientific analysis and geological mapping. We have been exploring four different environments: 1) conventional desktops (DT), 2) semi-immersive Fishtank VR (FT) (i.e., a conventional desktop with head-tracked stereo and 6DOF input), 3) tiled wall displays (TW), and 4) fully immersive virtual reality (IVR) (e.g., "Cave Automatic Virtual Environment," or Cave system). Formal studies demonstrate that fully immersive Cave environments are superior to desktop systems for many tasks [e.g., 4]

HIMmaterial: exploring new hybrid media for immersive drawing and collage
We propose an installation that explores Hybrid Immersive Models (HIM), the conjunction of digital VR panoramas with physical, handmade spherical perspectives and anamorphoses, as a new hybrid art medium that connects traditional drawing with digital, immersive art, creating a dialogue between material and immaterial forms of visual expression.Author A. Immersive Visualization for Enhanced Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis
Modern biomedical computer simulations produce spatiotemporal results that are often viewed at a single point in time on standard 2D displays. An immersive visualization environment (IVE) with 3D stereoscopic capability can mitigate some shortcomings of 2D displays via improved depth cues and active movement to further appreciate the spatial localization of imaging data with temporal computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results. We present a semi-automatic workflow for the import, processing, rendering, and stereoscopic visualization of high resolution, patient-specific imaging data, and CFD results in an IVE. Versatility of the workflow is highlighted with current clinical sequelae known to be influenced by adverse hemodynamics to illustrate potential clinical utility
