CSMA Local Area Networking under Dynamic Altruism
In this paper, we consider medium access control of local area networks
(LANs) under limited-information conditions as befits a distributed system.
Rather than assuming "by rule" conformance to a protocol designed to regulate
packet-flow rates (e.g., CSMA windowing), we begin with a non-cooperative game
framework and build a dynamic altruism term into the net utility. The effects
of altruism are analyzed at Nash equilibrium for both the ALOHA and CSMA
frameworks in the quasistationary (fictitious play) regime. We consider either
power or throughput based costs of networking, and the cases of identical or
heterogeneous (independent) users/players. In a numerical study we consider
diverse players, and we see that the effects of altruism for similar players
can be beneficial in the presence of significant congestion, but excessive
altruism may lead to underuse of the channel when demand is low
A carrier sensed multiple access protocol for high data base rate ring networks
The results of the study of a simple but effective media access protocol for high data rate networks are presented. The protocol is based on the fact that at high data rates networks can contain multiple messages simultaneously over their span, and that in a ring, nodes used to detect the presence of a message arriving from the immediate upstream neighbor. When an incoming signal is detected, the node must either abort or truncate a message it is presently sending. Thus, the protocol with local carrier sensing and multiple access is designated CSMA/RN. The performance of CSMA/RN with TTattempt and truncate is studied using analytic and simulation models. Three performance factors, wait or access time, service time and response or end-to-end travel time are presented. The service time is basically a function of the network rate, it changes by a factor of 1 between no load and full load. Wait time, which is zero for no load, remains small for load factors up to 70 percent of full load. Response time, which adds travel time while on the network to wait and service time, is mainly a function of network length, especially for longer distance networks. Simulation results are shown for CSMA/RN where messages are removed at the destination. A wide range of local and metropolitan area network parameters including variations in message size, network length, and node count are studied. Finally, a scaling factor based upon the ratio of message to network length demonstrates that the results, and hence, the CSMA/RN protocol, are applicable to wide area networks
Multiband CSMA/CA with RTS-CTS strategy
We present in this paper a new medium access control (MAC) scheme devoted to
orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems which aims at
reducing collision probabilities during the channel request period. The
proposed MAC relies on the classical carrier sense multiple access/collision
avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol with RTS / CTS ("Request To Send" / "Clear To
Send") mechanism. The proposed method focus on the collision probability of RTS
messages exploiting a multi-channel configuration for these messages while
using the whole band for data transmissions. The protocol may be interpreted as
an asynchronous frequency multiplexing of RTS messages. This method achieves
strong performance gains in terms of throughput and latency especially in

Enabling limited traffic scheduling in asynchronous ad hoc networks
We present work-in-progress developing a communication framework that addresses the communication challenges of the decentralized multihop wireless environment. The main contribution is the combination of a fully distributed, asynchronous power save mechanism with adaptation of the timing patterns defined by the power save mechanism to improve the energy and bandwidth efficiency of communication in multihop wireless networks. The possibility of leveraging this strategy to provide more complex forms of traffic management is explored
