A software architecture for mechanism-based social systems modelling in agent-based simulation models
This paper introduces the MBSSM (Mechanism-Based Social Systems Modelling) software architecture that is designed for expressing mechanisms of social theories with individual behaviour components in a unified way and implementing these mechanisms in an agent-based simulation model. The MBSSM architecture is based on a middle-range theory approach most recently expounded by analytical sociology and is designed in the object-oriented programming paradigm with Unified Modelling Language diagrams. This paper presents two worked examples of using the architecture for modelling individual behaviour mechanisms that give rise to the dynamics of population-level alcohol use: a single-theory model of norm theory and a multi-theory model that combines norm theory with role theory. The MBSSM architecture provides a computational environment within which theories based on social mechanisms can be represented, compared, and integrated. The architecture plays a fundamental enabling role within a wider simulation model-based framework of abductive reasoning in which families of theories are tested for their ability to explain concrete social phenomena
Coordination approaches and systems - part I : a strategic perspective
This is the first part of a two-part paper presenting a fundamental review and summary of research of design coordination and cooperation technologies. The theme of this review is aimed at the research conducted within the decision management aspect of design coordination. The focus is therefore on the strategies involved in making decisions and how these strategies are used to satisfy design requirements. The paper reviews research within collaborative and coordinated design, project and workflow management, and, task and organization models. The research reviewed has attempted to identify fundamental coordination mechanisms from different domains, however it is concluded that domain independent mechanisms need to be augmented with domain specific mechanisms to facilitate coordination. Can models of agents be transferred between different areas?
One of the main reasons for the sustained activity and interest in the field of agent-based systems, apart from the obvious recognition of its value as a natural and intuitive way of understanding the world, is its reach into very many different and distinct fields of investigation. Indeed, the notions of agents and multi-agent systems are relevant to fields ranging from economics to robotics, in contributing to the foundations of the field, being influenced by ongoing research, and in providing many domains of application. While these various disciplines constitute a rich and diverse environment for agent research, the way in which they may have been linked by it is a much less considered issue. The purpose of this panel was to examine just this concern, in the relationships between different areas that have resulted from agent research. The Repast Simulation/Modelling System for Geospatial Simulation
The use of simulation/modelling systems can simplify the implementation of agent-based models. Repast is one of the few simulation/modelling software systems that supports the integration of geospatial data especially that of vector-based geometries. This paper provides details about Repast specifically an overview, including its different development languages available to develop agent-based models. Before describing Repast’s core functionality and how models can be developed within it, specific emphasis will be placed on its ability to represent dynamics and incorporate geographical information. Once these elements of the system have been covered, a diverse list of Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) applications using Repast will be presented with particular emphasis on spatial applications utilizing Repast, in particular, those that utilize geospatial data

Although abundant studies identified barriers and facilitators of effective industrial marketing planning in practice, the literature still lacks practical tools and methods that marketing managers can use for the task. This paper applies fuzzy cognitive maps (FCM) to industrial marketing planning. In particular, agent based inference method is proposed to overcome dynamic relationships, time lags, and reusability issues of FCM evaluation. MACOM simulator also is developed to help marketing managers conduct what-if scenarios to see the impacts of possible changes on the variables defined in an FCM that represents industrial marketing planning problem. The simulator is applied to an industrial marketing planning problem for a global software service company in South Korea. This study has practical implication as it supports marketing managers for industrial marketing planning that has large number of variables and their cause–effect relationships. It also contributes to FCM theory by providing an agent based method for the inference of FCM. Modeling the Internet of Things: a simulation perspective
This paper deals with the problem of properly simulating the Internet of
Things (IoT). Simulating an IoT allows evaluating strategies that can be
employed to deploy smart services over different kinds of territories. However,
the heterogeneity of scenarios seriously complicates this task. This imposes
the use of sophisticated modeling and simulation techniques. We discuss novel
approaches for the provision of scalable simulation scenarios, that enable the
real-time execution of massively populated IoT environments. Attention is given
to novel hybrid and multi-level simulation techniques that, when combined with
agent-based, adaptive Parallel and Distributed Simulation (PADS) approaches,
can provide means to perform highly detailed simulations on demand. To support
this claim, we detail a use case concerned with the simulation of vehicular

Towards A Theory-Of-Mind-Inspired Generic Decision-Making Framework
Simulation is widely used to make model-based predictions, but few approaches
have attempted this technique in dynamic physical environments of medium to
high complexity or in general contexts. After an introduction to the cognitive
science concepts from which this work is inspired and the current development
in the use of simulation as a decision-making technique, we propose a generic
framework based on theory of mind, which allows an agent to reason and perform
actions using multiple simulations of automatically created or externally
inputted models of the perceived environment. A description of a partial
implementation is given, which aims to solve a popular game within the
IJCAI2013 AIBirds contest. Results of our approach are presented, in comparison
with the competition benchmark. Finally, future developments regarding the
