    This thesis proposes SoPC (System on a Programmable Chip) architectures for efficient embedding of vison-based localization and obstacle detection tasks in a navigational pipeline on autonomous mobile robots. The obtained results are equivalent or better in comparison to state-ofthe- art. For localization, an efficient hardware architecture that supports EKF-SLAM's local map management with seven-dimensional landmarks in real time is developed. For obstacle detection a novel method of object recognition is proposed - detection by identification framework based on single detection window scale. This framework allows adequate algorithmic precision and execution speeds on embedded hardware platforms.Ova teza bavi se dizajnom SoPC (engl. System on a Programmable Chip) arhitektura i algoritama za efikasnu implementaciju zadataka lokalizacije i detekcije prepreka baziranih na viziji u kontekstu autonomne robotske navigacije. Za lokalizaciju, razvijena je efikasna računarska arhitektura za EKF-SLAM algoritam, koja podržava skladištenje i obradu sedmodimenzionalnih orijentira lokalne mape u realnom vremenu. Za detekciju prepreka je predložena nova metoda prepoznavanja objekata u slici putem prozora detekcije fiksne dimenzije, koja omogućava veću brzinu izvršavanja algoritma detekcije na namenskim računarskim platformama

    ECG compression for Holter monitoring

    Cardiologists can gain useful insight into a patient's condition when they are able to correlate the patent's symptoms and activities. For this purpose, a Holter Monitor is often used - a portable electrocardiogram (ECG) recorder worn by the patient for a period of 24-72 hours. Preferably, the monitor is not cumbersome to the patient and thus it should be designed to be as small and light as possible; however, the storage requirements for such a long signal are very large and can significantly increase the recorder's size and cost, and so signal compression is often employed. At the same time, the decompressed signal must contain enough detail for the cardiologist to be able to identify irregularities. "Lossy" compressors may obscure such details, where a "lossless" compressor preserves the signal exactly as captured.The purpose of this thesis is to develop a platform upon which a Holter Monitor can be built, including a hardware-assisted lossless compression method in order to avoid the signal quality penalties of a lossy algorithm. The objective of this thesis is to develop and implement a low-complexity lossless ECG encoding algorithm capable of at least a 2:1 compression ratio in an embedded system for use in a Holter Monitor. Different lossless compression techniques were evaluated in terms of coding efficiency as well as suitability for ECG waveform application, random access within the signal and complexity of the decoding operation. For the reduction of the physical circuit size, a System On a Programmable Chip (SOPC) design was utilized. A coder based on a library of linear predictors and Rice coding was chosen and found to give a compression ratio of at least 2:1 and as high as 3:1 on real-world signals tested while having a low decoder complexity and fast random access to arbitrary parts of the signal. In the hardware-assisted implementation, the speed of encoding was a factor of between four and five faster than a software encoder running on the same CPU while allowing the CPU to perform other tasks during the encoding process

    Gaussian Belief Propagation on a Field-Programmable Gate Array for Solving Linear Equation Systems

    Solving Linear Equation System (LESs) is a common problem in numerous fields of science. Even though the problem is well studied and powerful solvers are available nowadays, solving LES is still a bottleneck in many numerical applications concerning computation time. This issue especially pertains to applications in mobile robotics constrained by real-time requirements, where on-top power consumption and weight play an important role. This paper provides a general framework to approximately solve large LESs by Gaussian Belief Propagation (GaBP), which is extremely suitable for parallelization and implementation in hardware on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). We derive the simple update rules of the Message Passing Algorithm for GaBP and show how to implement the approach efficiently on a System on a Programmable Chip (SoPC). In particular, multiple dedicated co-processors take care of recurring computations in GaBP. Exploiting multiple Direct Memory Access (DMA) controllers in scatter-gather mode and available arithmetic logic slices for numerical calculations accelerate the algorithm. Presented evaluations demonstrate that the approach does not only provide an accurate approximative solution of the LES. It also outperforms traditional solvers with respect to computation time for certain LESs

    Reconfigurable FPGA Architecture for Computer Vision Applications in Smart Camera Networks

    Smart Camera Networks (SCNs) is nowadays an emerging research field which represents the natural evolution of centralized computer vision applications towards full distributed and pervasive systems. In this vision, one of the biggest effort is in the definition of a flexible and reconfigurable SCN node architecture able to remotely update the application parameter and the performed computer vision application at run­time. In this respect, we present a novel SCN node architecture based on a device in which a microcontroller manage all the network functionality as well as the remote configuration, while an FPGA implements all the necessary module of a full computer vision pipeline. In this work the envisioned architecture is first detailed in general terms, then a real implementation is presented to show the feasibility and the benefits of the proposed solution. Finally, performance evaluation results underline the potential of an hardware software codesign approach in reaching flexibility and reduced processing time

    In the recent years, a number of recognition and authentication systems based on biometric measurements have been proposed. Algorithms and sensors have been developed to acquire and process many different biometric traits. Moreover, the biometric technology is being used in novel ways, with potential commercial and practical implications to our daily activities. The key objective of the book is to provide a collection of comprehensive references on some recent theoretical development as well as novel applications in biometrics. The topics covered in this book reflect well both aspects of development. They include biometric sample quality, privacy preserving and cancellable biometrics, contactless biometrics, novel and unconventional biometrics, and the technical challenges in implementing the technology in portable devices. The book consists of 15 chapters. It is divided into four sections, namely, biometric applications on mobile platforms, cancelable biometrics, biometric encryption, and other applications.     Homogeneous and heterogeneous MPSoC architectures with network-on-chip connectivity for low-power and real-time multimedia signal processing

    Two multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSoC) architectures are proposed and compared in the paper with reference to audio and video processing applications. One architecture exploits a homogeneous topology; it consists of 8 identical tiles, each made of a 32-bit RISC core enhanced by a 64-bit DSP coprocessor with local memory. The other MPSoC architecture exploits a heterogeneous-tile topology with on-chip distributed memory resources; the tiles act as application specific processors supporting a different class of algorithms. In both architectures, the multiple tiles are interconnected by a network-on-chip (NoC) infrastructure, through network interfaces and routers, which allows parallel operations of the multiple tiles. The functional performances and the implementation complexity of the NoC-based MPSoC architectures are assessed by synthesis results in submicron CMOS technology. Among the large set of supported algorithms, two case studies are considered: the real-time implementation of an H.264/MPEG AVC video codec and of a low-distortion digital audio amplifier. The heterogeneous architecture ensures a higher power efficiency and a smaller area occupation and is more suited for low-power multimedia processing, such as in mobile devices. The homogeneous scheme allows for a higher flexibility and easier system scalability and is more suited for general-purpose DSP tasks in power-supplied devices
