    On the analogy between vehicle and vehicle-like cavities with reverberation chambers

    Deploying wireless systems in vehicles is an area of current interest. Often, it is implicitly assumed that the electromagnetic environment in vehicle cavities is analogous to that in reverberation chambers, it is therefore important to assess to what extent this analogy is valid. Specifically, the cavity time constant, electromagnetic isolation and electric field uniformity are investigated for typical vehicle and vehicle-like cavities. It is found that the time constant is a global property of the cavity (i.e., it is the same for all links). This is important, as it means that the root mean square delay spread for any link is also a property of the cavity, and thus so is the coherence bandwidth. These properties could be exploited by wireless sytems deployed in vehicles. It is also found that the field distribution is not homogeneous (and is therefore not uniform), but can be isotropic. For situations where the field distribution is isotropic, the spatial coherence is well defined, and therefore Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output antenna arrays can be used to improve performance of wireless systems. For situations where the field distribution is not isotropic, the angular spread is not uniform, and therefore beam-forming can be used to improve performance of wireless systems.This is the author's accepted manuscript and will be under embargo until publication.     60-GHz Millimeter-Wave Propagation Inside Bus: Measurement, Modeling, Simulation, and Performance Analysis

    Millimeter-wave (mmWave) transmission over the unlicensed 60-GHz spectrum is a potential solution to realize high-speed internet access, even inside mass transit vehicles. The solution involves communication between users and a mmWave-band on-board unit that aggregates/disseminates data streams from/to commuters and maintains the connection with the nearest terrestrial network infrastructure node. In this paper, we provide a measurement-based channel model for the 60-GHz mmWave propagation inside a typical inter-city bus. The model characterizes power delay profile (PDP) of the wireless intra-vehicular channel, and it is derived from about 1000 data sets measured within the bus. The proposed analytical model is further translated into a simple simulation algorithm that generates in-vehicle channel PDPs. Different goodness-of-fit tests confirm that the simulated PDPs are in good agreement with the measured data. Finally, a tapped-delay-line (TDL) channel model is formulated from the proposed PDP model, and the TDL model is used to study the bit error rate (BER) performance of the mmWave link inside bus under varying data rates and link lengths

    Connected Vehicles: Solutions and Challenges

    Abstract-Providing various wireless connectivities for vehicles enables the communication between vehicles and their internal and external environments. Such a connected vehicle solution is expected to be the next frontier for automotive revolution and the key to the evolution to next generation intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). Moreover, connected vehicles are also the building blocks of emerging Internet of Vehicles (IoV). Extensive research activities and numerous industrial initiatives have paved the way for the coming era of connected vehicles. In this paper, we focus on wireless technologies and potential challenges to provide vehicle-to-x connectivity. In particular, we discuss the challenges and review the state-of-the-art wireless solutions for vehicle-to-sensor, vehicleto-vehicle, vehicle-to-Internet, and vehicle-to-road infrastructure connectivities. We also identify future research issues for building connected vehicles
