Spatio-Temporal Patterns act as Computational Mechanisms governing Emergent behavior in Robotic Swarms
open access articleOur goal is to control a robotic swarm without removing its swarm-like nature. In other words, we aim to intrinsically control a robotic swarm emergent behavior. Past attempts at governing robotic swarms or their selfcoordinating emergent behavior, has proven ineffective, largely due to the swarm’s inherent randomness (making it difficult to predict) and utter simplicity (they lack a leader, any kind of centralized control, long-range communication, global knowledge, complex internal models and only operate on a couple of basic, reactive rules). The main problem is that emergent phenomena itself is not fully understood, despite being at the forefront of current research. Research into 1D and 2D Cellular Automata has uncovered a hidden computational layer which bridges the micromacro gap (i.e., how individual behaviors at the micro-level influence the global behaviors on the macro-level). We hypothesize that there also lie embedded computational mechanisms at the heart of a robotic swarm’s emergent behavior. To test this theory, we proceeded to simulate robotic swarms (represented as both particles and dynamic networks) and then designed local rules to induce various types of intelligent, emergent behaviors (as well as designing genetic algorithms to evolve robotic swarms with emergent behaviors). Finally, we analysed these robotic swarms and successfully confirmed our hypothesis; analyzing their developments and interactions over time revealed various forms of embedded spatiotemporal patterns which store, propagate and parallel process information across the swarm according to some internal, collision-based logic (solving the mystery of how simple robots are able to self-coordinate and allow global behaviors to emerge across the swarm)

A Distributed Epigenetic Shape Formation and Regeneration Algorithm for a Swarm of Robots
Living cells exhibit both growth and regeneration of body tissues. Epigenetic
Tracking (ET), models this growth and regenerative qualities of living cells
and has been used to generate complex 2D and 3D shapes. In this paper, we
present an ET based algorithm that aids a swarm of identically-programmed
robots to form arbitrary shapes and regenerate them when cut. The algorithm
works in a distributed manner using only local interactions and computations
without any central control and aids the robots to form the shape in a
triangular lattice structure. In case of damage or splitting of the shape, it
helps each set of the remaining robots to regenerate and position themselves to
build scaled down versions of the original shape. The paper presents the shapes

Cellular Automata Applications in Shortest Path Problem
Cellular Automata (CAs) are computational models that can capture the
essential features of systems in which global behavior emerges from the
collective effect of simple components, which interact locally. During the last
decades, CAs have been extensively used for mimicking several natural processes
and systems to find fine solutions in many complex hard to solve computer
science and engineering problems. Among them, the shortest path problem is one
of the most pronounced and highly studied problems that scientists have been
trying to tackle by using a plethora of methodologies and even unconventional
approaches. The proposed solutions are mainly justified by their ability to
provide a correct solution in a better time complexity than the renowned
Dijkstra's algorithm. Although there is a wide variety regarding the
algorithmic complexity of the algorithms suggested, spanning from simplistic
graph traversal algorithms to complex nature inspired and bio-mimicking
algorithms, in this chapter we focus on the successful application of CAs to
shortest path problem as found in various diverse disciplines like computer
science, swarm robotics, computer networks, decision science and biomimicking
of biological organisms' behaviour. In particular, an introduction on the first
CA-based algorithm tackling the shortest path problem is provided in detail.
After the short presentation of shortest path algorithms arriving from the
relaxization of the CAs principles, the application of the CA-based shortest
path definition on the coordinated motion of swarm robotics is also introduced.
Moreover, the CA based application of shortest path finding in computer
networks is presented in brief. Finally, a CA that models exactly the behavior
of a biological organism, namely the Physarum's behavior, finding the

Swarm robotics: Cooperative navigation in unknown environments
Swarm Robotics is garnering attention in the robotics field due to its substantial benefits. It has been proven to outperform most other robotic approaches in many applications such as military, space exploration and disaster search and rescue missions. It is inspired by the behavior of swarms of social insects such as ants and bees. It consists of a number of robots with limited capabilities and restricted local sensing. When deployed, individual robots behave according to local sensing until the emergence of a global behavior where they, as a swarm, can accomplish missions individuals cannot. In this research, we propose a novel exploration and navigation method based on a combination of Probabilistic Finite Sate Machine (PFSM), Robotic Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization (RDPSO) and Depth First Search (DFS). We use V-REP Simulator to test our approach. We are also implementing our own cost effective swarm robot platform, AntBOT, as a proof of concept for future experimentation. We prove that our proposed method will yield excellent navigation solution in optimal time when compared to methods using either PFSM only or RDPSO only. In fact, our method is proved to produce 40% more success rate along with an exploration speed of 1.4x other methods. After exploration, robots can navigate the environment forming a Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) and using the graph of robots as network nodes
Design of an UAV swarm
This master thesis tries to give an overview on the general aspects involved in the design of an UAV swarm. UAV swarms are continuoulsy gaining popularity amongst researchers and UAV manufacturers, since they allow greater success rates in task accomplishing with reduced times. Appart from this, multiple UAVs cooperating between them opens a new field of missions that can only be carried in this way. All the topics explained within this master thesis will explain all the agents involved in the design of an UAV swarm, from the communication protocols between them, navigation and trajectory analysis and task allocation
Recent Advances in Multi Robot Systems
To design a team of robots which is able to perform given tasks is a great concern of many members of robotics community. There are many problems left to be solved in order to have the fully functional robot team. Robotics community is trying hard to solve such problems (navigation, task allocation, communication, adaptation, control, ...). This book represents the contributions of the top researchers in this field and will serve as a valuable tool for professionals in this interdisciplinary field. Towards a swarm robotic approach for cooperative object recognition
Social insects have inspired the behaviours of swarm robotic systems for the last 20 years. Interactions of the simple individuals in these swarms form solutions to relatively complex problems. A novel swarm robotic method is investigated for future robotic cooperative object recognition tasks. Previous multi-agent systems involve cameras and image analyses to identify objects. They cooperate only to improve their hypotheses of the shape's identity. The system proposed uses agents whose interactions with each other around the physical boundaries of the object's shape allow the distinguishing features found. The agents are a physical embodiment of the vision system, making them suitable for environments where it would not be possible to use a camera. A Simplified Hexagonal Model was developed to simulate and examine the strategies. The hexagonal cells of which can be empty, contain an agent (hBot) or part of an object shape. Initially the hBots are required to identify the valid object shapes from a set of two types of known shapes. To do this the hBots change state when in contact with an object and when touching other hBots of the same state level, where some states are only achieved when neighbouring certain object shapes. The agents are oblivious, anonymous and homogeneous. They also do not know their position or orientation and cannot distinguish between object shapes alone due to their limited sensor range.
