    A Review of Predictive Quality of Experience Management in Video Streaming Services

    Satisfying the requirements of devices and users of online video streaming services is a challenging task. It requires not only managing the network quality of service but also to exert real-time control, addressing the user's quality of experience (QoE) expectations. QoE management is an end-to-end process that, due to the ever-increasing variety of video services, has become too complex for conventional “reactive” techniques. Herein, we review the most significant “predictive” QoE management methods for video streaming services, showing how different machine learning approaches may be used to perform proactive control. We pinpoint a selection of the best suited machine learning methods, highlighting advantages and limitations in specific service conditions. The review leads to lessons learned and guidelines to better address QoE requirements in complex video services

    Human-centric quality management of immersive multimedia applications

    Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) multimodal systems are the latest trend within the field of multimedia. As they emulate the senses by means of omni-directional visuals, 360 degrees sound, motion tracking and touch simulation, they are able to create a strong feeling of presence and interaction with the virtual environment. These experiences can be applied for virtual training (Industry 4.0), tele-surgery (healthcare) or remote learning (education). However, given the strong time and task sensitiveness of these applications, it is of great importance to sustain the end-user quality, i.e. the Quality-of-Experience (QoE), at all times. Lack of synchronization and quality degradation need to be reduced to a minimum to avoid feelings of cybersickness or loss of immersiveness and concentration. This means that there is a need to shift the quality management from system-centered performance metrics towards a more human, QoE-centered approach. However, this requires for novel techniques in the three areas of the QoE-management loop (monitoring, modelling and control). This position paper identifies open areas of research to fully enable human-centric driven management of immersive multimedia. To this extent, four main dimensions are put forward: (1) Task and well-being driven subjective assessment; (2) Real-time QoE modelling; (3) Accurate viewport prediction; (4) Machine Learning (ML)-based quality optimization and content recreation. This paper discusses the state-of-the-art, and provides with possible solutions to tackle the open challenges

    A QoE adaptive management system for high definition video streaming over wireless networks

    [EN] The development of the smart devices had led to demanding high-quality streaming videos over wireless communications. In Multimedia technology, the Ultra-High Definition (UHD) video quality has an important role due to the smart devices that are capable of capturing and processing high-quality video content. Since delivery of the high-quality video stream over the wireless networks adds challenges to the end-users, the network behaviors 'factors such as delay of arriving packets, delay variation between packets, and packet loss, are impacted on the Quality of Experience (QoE). Moreover, the characteristics of the video and the devices are other impacts, which influenced by the QoE. In this research work, the influence of the involved parameters is studied based on characteristics of the video, wireless channel capacity, and receivers' aspects, which collapse the QoE. Then, the impact of the aforementioned parameters on both subjective and objective QoE is studied. A smart algorithm for video stream services is proposed to optimize assessing and managing the QoE of clients (end-users). The proposed algorithm includes two approaches: first, using the machine-learning model to predict QoE. Second, according to the QoE prediction, the algorithm manages the video quality of the end-users by offering better video quality.     Data mining and predictive analytics application on cellular networks to monitor and optimize quality of service and customer experience

    This research study focuses on the application models of Data Mining and Machine Learning covering cellular network traffic, in the objective to arm Mobile Network Operators with full view of performance branches (Services, Device, Subscribers). The purpose is to optimize and minimize the time to detect service and subscriber patterns behaviour. Different data mining techniques and predictive algorithms have been applied on real cellular network datasets to uncover different data usage patterns using specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Key Quality Indicators (KQI). The following tools will be used to develop the concept: RStudio for Machine Learning and process visualization, Apache Spark, SparkSQL for data and big data processing and clicData for service Visualization. Two use cases have been studied during this research. In the first study, the process of Data and predictive Analytics are fully applied in the field of Telecommunications to efficiently address users’ experience, in the goal of increasing customer loyalty and decreasing churn or customer attrition. Using real cellular network transactions, prediction analytics are used to predict customers who are likely to churn, which can result in revenue loss. Prediction algorithms and models including Classification Tree, Random Forest, Neural Networks and Gradient boosting have been used with an exploratory Data Analysis, determining relationship between predicting variables. The data is segmented in to two, a training set to train the model and a testing set to test the model. The evaluation of the best performing model is based on the prediction accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and the Confusion Matrix on the test set. The second use case analyses Service Quality Management using modern data mining techniques and the advantages of in-memory big data processing with Apache Spark and SparkSQL to save cost on tool investment; thus, a low-cost Service Quality Management model is proposed and analyzed. With increase in Smart phone adoption, access to mobile internet services, applications such as streaming, interactive chats require a certain service level to ensure customer satisfaction. As a result, an SQM framework is developed with Service Quality Index (SQI) and Key Performance Index (KPI). The research concludes with recommendations and future studies around modern technology applications in Telecommunications including Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud and recommender systems.Cellular networks have evolved and are still evolving, from traditional GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) Circuit switched which only supported voice services and extremely low data rate, to LTE all Packet networks accommodating high speed data used for various service applications such as video streaming, video conferencing, heavy torrent download; and for say in a near future the roll-out of the Fifth generation (5G) cellular networks, intended to support complex technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things), High Definition video streaming and projected to cater massive amount of data. With high demand on network services and easy access to mobile phones, billions of transactions are performed by subscribers. The transactions appear in the form of SMSs, Handovers, voice calls, web browsing activities, video and audio streaming, heavy downloads and uploads. Nevertheless, the stormy growth in data traffic and the high requirements of new services introduce bigger challenges to Mobile Network Operators (NMOs) in analysing the big data traffic flowing in the network. Therefore, Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) turn in to a challenge. Inefficiency in mining, analysing data and applying predictive intelligence on network traffic can produce high rate of unhappy customers or subscribers, loss on revenue and negative services’ perspective. Researchers and Service Providers are investing in Data mining, Machine Learning and AI (Artificial Intelligence) methods to manage services and experience.
