    Stationary distributions of the multi-type ASEP

    We give a recursive construction of the stationary distribution of multi-type asymmetric simple exclusion processes on a finite ring or on the infinite line ZZ. The construction can be interpreted in terms of "multi-line diagrams" or systems of queues in tandem. Let qq be the asymmetry parameter of the system. The queueing construction generalises the one previously known for the totally asymmetric (q=0q=0) case, by introducing queues in which each potential service is unused with probability qkq^k when the queue-length is kk. The analysis is based on the matrix product representation of Prolhac, Evans and Mallick. Consequences of the construction include: a simple method for sampling exactly from the stationary distribution for the system on a ring; results on common denominators of the stationary probabilities, expressed as rational functions of qq with non-negative integer coefficients; and probabilistic descriptions of "convoy formation" phenomena in large systems.Comment: 54 pages, 4 figure

    On the tailoring of CAST-32A certification guidance to real COTS multicore architectures

    The use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) multicores in real-time industry is on the rise due to multicores' potential performance increase and energy reduction. Yet, the unpredictable impact on timing of contention in shared hardware resources challenges certification. Furthermore, most safety certification standards target single-core architectures and do not provide explicit guidance for multicore processors. Recently, however, CAST-32A has been presented providing guidance for software planning, development and verification in multicores.     Simulation of networks of spiking neurons: A review of tools and strategies

    We review different aspects of the simulation of spiking neural networks. We start by reviewing the different types of simulation strategies and algorithms that are currently implemented. We next review the precision of those simulation strategies, in particular in cases where plasticity depends on the exact timing of the spikes. We overview different simulators and simulation environments presently available (restricted to those freely available, open source and documented). For each simulation tool, its advantages and pitfalls are reviewed, with an aim to allow the reader to identify which simulator is appropriate for a given task. Finally, we provide a series of benchmark simulations of different types of networks of spiking neurons, including Hodgkin-Huxley type, integrate-and-fire models, interacting with current-based or conductance-based synapses, using clock-driven or event-driven integration strategies. The same set of models are implemented on the different simulators, and the codes are made available. The ultimate goal of this review is to provide a resource to facilitate identifying the appropriate integration strategy and simulation tool to use for a given modeling problem related to spiking neural networks.Comment: 49 pages, 24 figures, 1 table; review article, Journal of Computational Neuroscience, in press (2007

    Highway Capacity Analysis Based on JKR Traffic Census

    When designed road approach its demand, we started to experience lower speed and congestion. In Malaysia, the capacity of road was designed based on Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) design standard. JKR traffic census is the survey done twice a year to check the traffic volume. The data collection of current traffic will be combined with other known data such as population, employment, trip rates, zones , travel cost , etc. to enable us to forecast the future demand. The current data also helpful in determining whether the current road was sufficient or further development was needed in the future. The scope of this research is at Perak where the government plans to make Perak a high-income state with a viable economy. With the future development plan, the existing roads within Perak will be affected. The new transportation plans are needed to meet those demands. New analysis on the highway capacity and design should be done, to check the current level of service while compare it with designed capacity. The capacity analysis will based on the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM2000) to determine the performance of current facilities and compared with expected annual traffic growth

    Study to design and develop remote manipulator system

    Modeling of human performance in remote manipulation tasks is reported by automated procedures using computers to analyze and count motions during a manipulation task. Performance is monitored by an on-line computer capable of measuring the joint angles of both master and slave and in some cases the trajectory and velocity of the hand itself. In this way the operator's strategies with different transmission delays, displays, tasks, and manipulators can be analyzed in detail for comparison. Some progress is described in obtaining a set of standard tasks and difficulty measures for evaluating manipulator performance

    Customer mobility and congestion in supermarkets

    The analysis and characterization of human mobility using population-level mobility models is important for numerous applications, ranging from the estimation of commuter flows in cities to modeling trade flows between countries. However, almost all of these applications have focused on large spatial scales, which typically range between intra-city scales to inter-country scales. In this paper, we investigate population-level human mobility models on a much smaller spatial scale by using them to estimate customer mobility flow between supermarket zones. We use anonymized, ordered customer-basket data to infer empirical mobility flow in supermarkets, and we apply variants of the gravity and intervening-opportunities models to fit this mobility flow and estimate the flow on unseen data. We find that a doubly-constrained gravity model and an extended radiation model (which is a type of intervening-opportunities model) can successfully estimate 65--70\% of the flow inside supermarkets. Using a gravity model as a case study, we then investigate how to reduce congestion in supermarkets using mobility models. We model each supermarket zone as a queue, and we use a gravity model to identify store layouts with low congestion, which we measure either by the maximum number of visits to a zone or by the total mean queue size. We then use a simulated-annealing algorithm to find store layouts with lower congestion than a supermarket's original layout. In these optimized store layouts, we find that popular zones are often in the perimeter of a store. Our research gives insight both into how customers move in supermarkets and into how retailers can arrange stores to reduce congestion. It also provides a case study of human mobility on small spatial scales
