    A Cross-System Approach for Multimedia Services with IP Multicast in 4G Networks

    The increased demand for multimedia services by mobile end users in recent years have driven both Broadcast and Wireless Network operators to develop new systems and architectures for the deployment of such services. The proposed solutions are nonetheless limited either in terms of QoS or Capabilities to deliver new interactive services. This paper highlights strengths and drawbacks of the existing technologies in terms of QoS, Security and Mobility. In order to fill the gap between current solutions we propose a new architecture that builds itself on the synergies created by a heterogeneous network made of existing delivering technologies, such as 3GPP/MBMS and DVB, where services can be delivered to end-users in the most appropriate way for end-users and operators alike.     In networking research, the simulation is often the single way to overcome the lack of equipment needed for laboratory setup of complex experimental topologies, with diverse traffic pattern scenarios. Even for simpler topologies and traffic scenarios, the simulation remains attractive due to the available facilities on data collection, graphics generation and step by step analysis of different protocol machines. Inter-domain multicast scenarios, where heterogeneous QoS requirements should be considered, is a particular example where both complexity and resources availability justify the use of simulation. This paper reports the experience gained by the usage of simulation tools in multicast routing with QoS. It is not focused on the real simulation results reported but on the process used to obtain them. NS-2 has been used as the base of this work

    Scalable approaches for DiffServ multicasting

    Over the last several years, there has been an explosion in the introduction of new Internet technologies. Whereas the Internet in its original form was a medium primarily for academia and research interests, the Internet has been redefined as business and consumer interests have dominated the focal points of Internet technology. The dominant question facing the Internet today is, how can the network meet the needs of the users and their applications while trying to keep such implementations scalable to the billions of users present on the Internet? Two of the emerging technologies for answering the question are Differentiated Services (DiffServ) and multicasting. Although the two technologies share complementary goals, the integration of the two technologies is a non-trivial issue due to three fundamental conflicts. The three fundamental conflicts are the scalability of per-group state information, sender versus receiver-driven QoS, and resource management. The issues surrounding how to solve these conflicts provide the basis for this dissertation.;In this dissertation, two architectures (DiffServ Multicasting (DSMCast) and Edge-Based Multicasting (EBM)) are proposed to satisfy the requirements for scalable DiffServ multicasting architectures. In addition to the two architectures, this dissertation also presents the first in-depth study regarding single tree support for heterogeneous QoS multicasting. Furthermore, the dissertation proposes a novel application of DSMCast for fault tolerance and management of the DiffServ network. Finally, the dissertation comments on future applications of the architectures and proposes several areas for future research

    Analysis domain model for shared virtual environments

    The field of shared virtual environments, which also encompasses online games and social 3D environments, has a system landscape consisting of multiple solutions that share great functional overlap. However, there is little system interoperability between the different solutions. A shared virtual environment has an associated problem domain that is highly complex raising difficult challenges to the development process, starting with the architectural design of the underlying system. This paper has two main contributions. The first contribution is a broad domain analysis of shared virtual environments, which enables developers to have a better understanding of the whole rather than the part(s). The second contribution is a reference domain model for discussing and describing solutions - the Analysis Domain Model

    End-to-end QoS architecture for 4G scenarios

    This paper describes the QoS architecture and the corresponding QoS signalling protocols to be developed inside the IST project Daidalos. We address the main results achieved in terms of the definition of the QoS components and its interfaces, the description of the application and network services, definition of the signalling scenarios for the integration of the QoS signalling with the application signalling and with mobility approaches, and specification of the intra- and inter- domain QoS control approaches. We also describe the QoS management of the system, through the Policy–based Management System, and a Real-time Network Monitoring system able to aid in admission control with the results of active and passive measurements. All the elements, interfaces and functionalities take into account multicast services and inherent broadcast networks

    Session Management in Multicast

    As a new network technique to efficiently distribute information from a small number of senders to large numbers of receivers, multicast encounters many problems in scalability, membership management, security, etc. These problems hinder the deployment of multicast technology in commercial applications. To overcome these problems, a more general solution for multicast technology is needed. In this paper, after studying current multicast technologies, we summarized the technical requirements for multicast, including data delivery, scalability, security, group management, reliability, and deployment. In order to understand and meet the requirements, we define a life cycle model that most multicast sessions should follow. According to the requirements and the life cycle model, we propose and design a general solution that can control each phase of a session and satisfy most requirements for multicast technology. This general solution has three parts: hierarchical topology auto-configuration algorithm, Session Management Mechanism, and techniques supporting different multicast protocols. To verify the feasibility of our solution and compare its performance with other multicast techniques, we simulate our solution and compare it with PIM-SM and ESM
