    Get PDF
PhD ThesisBIODEVICE implants for telemetry are increasingly applied today in various areas applications. There are many examples such as; telemedicine, biotelemetry, health care, treatments for chronic diseases, epilepsy and blindness, all of which are using a wireless infrastructure environment. They use microelectronics technology for diagnostics or monitoring signals such as Electroencephalography or Electromyography. Conceptually the biodevices are defined as one of these technologies combined with transcutaneous wireless implant telemetry (TWIT). A wireless inductive coupling link is a common way for transferring the RF power and data, to communicate between a reader and a battery-less implant. Demand for higher data rate for the acquisition data returned from the body is increasing, and requires an efficient modulator to achieve high transfer rate and low power consumption. In such applications, Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulation has advantages over other schemes, and double the symbol rate with respect to Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) over the same spectrum band. In contrast to analogue modulators for generating QPSK signals, where the circuit complexity and power dissipation are unsuitable for medical purposes, a digital approach has advantages. Eventually a simple design can be achieved by mixing the hardware and software to minimize size and power consumption for implantable telemetry applications. This work proposes a new approach to digital modulator techniques, applied to transcutaneous implantable telemetry applications; inherently increasing the data rate and simplifying the hardware design. A novel design for a QPSK VHDL modulator to convey a high data rate is demonstrated. Essentially, CPLD/FPGA technology is used to generate hardware from VHDL code, and implement the device which performs the modulation. This improves the data transmission rate between the reader and biodevice. This type of modulator provides digital synthesis and the flexibility to reconfigure and upgrade with the two most often languages used being VHDL and Verilog (IEEE Standard) being used as hardware structure description languages. The second objective of this thesis is to improve the wireless coupling power (WCP). An efficient power amplifier was developed and a new algorithm developed for auto-power control design at the reader unit, which monitors the implant device and keeps the device working within the safety regulation power limits (SAR). The proposed system design has also been modeled and simulated with MATLAB/Simulink to validate the modulator and examine the performance of the proposed modulator in relation to its specifications.Higher Education Ministry in Liby

The 2nd International Electronic Conference on Applied Sciences

    Get PDF
This book is focused on the works presented at the 2nd International Electronic Conference on Applied Sciences, organized by Applied Sciences from 15 to 31 October 2021 on the MDPI Sciforum platform. Two decades have passed since the start of the 21st century. The development of sciences and technologies is growing ever faster today than in the previous century. The field of science is expanding, and the structure of science is becoming ever richer. Because of this expansion and fine structure growth, researchers may lose themselves in the deep forest of the ever-increasing frontiers and sub-fields being created. This international conference on the Applied Sciences was started to help scientists conduct their own research into the growth of these frontiers by breaking down barriers and connecting the many sub-fields to cut through this vast forest. These functions will allow researchers to see these frontiers and their surrounding (or quite distant) fields and sub-fields, and give them the opportunity to incubate and develop their knowledge even further with the aid of this multi-dimensional network

A survey of molecular communication in cell biology : establishing a new hierarchy for interdisciplinary applications

    Get PDF
Molecular communication (MC) engineering is inspired by the use of chemical signals as information carriers in cell biology. The biological nature of chemical signaling makes MC a promising methodology for interdisciplinary applications requiring communication between cells and other microscale devices. However, since the life sciences and communications engineering fields have distinct approaches to formulating and solving research problems, the mismatch between them can hinder the translation of research results and impede the development and implementation of interdisciplinary solutions. To bridge this gap, this survey proposes a novel communication hierarchy for MC signaling in cell biology and maps phenomena, contributions, and problems to the hierarchy. The hierarchy includes: 1) the physical propagation of cell signaling at the Physical Signal Propagation level; 2) the generation, reception, and biochemical pathways of molecular signals at the Physical and Chemical Signal Interaction level; 3) the quantification of physical signals, including macroscale observation and control methods, and conversion of signals to information at the Signal-Data Interface level; 4) the interpretation of information in cell signals and the realization of synthetic systems to store, process, and communicate molecular signals at the Local Data Abstraction level; and 5) applications relying on communication with MC signals at the Application level. To further demonstrate the proposed hierarchy, it is applied to case studies on quorum sensing, neuronal signaling, and communication via DNA. Finally, several open problems are identified for each level and the integration of multiple levels. The proposed hierarchy provides language for communication engineers to study and interface with biological systems, and also helps biologists to understand how communications engineering concepts can be exploited to interpret, control, and manipulate signaling in cell biology

Vegetable spoilage renders a product undesirable due to changes in sensory characteristics. The aim of this study was to investigate the change in the fingerprint of VOC composition that occur as a result of spoilage in broccoli, carrots, onions and potatoes. SPME and GC-MS techniques were used to identify and determine the relative abundance of VOC associated with both fresh and spoilt vegetables. Although a number of similar compounds were detected in varying quantities in the headspace of fresh and spoilt samples, certain compounds which were detected in the headspace of spoilt vegetables were however absent in fresh samples. Analysis of the headspace of fresh vegetables indicated the presence of a variety of alkanes, alkenes and terpenes. Among VOCs identified in the spoilt samples were dimethyl disulphide and dimethyl sulphide in broccoli; Ethyl propanoate and Butyl acetate in carrots; 1-Propanethioland 2-Hexyl-5-methyl-3(2H)-furanone in onions; and 2, 3-Butanediol in potatoes. The overall results of this study indicate the presence of VOCs that can serve as potential biomarkers for early detection of quality deterioration and in turn enhance operational and quality control decisions in the vegetable industry

Chapter 34 - Biocompatibility of nanocellulose: Emerging biomedical applications

    Get PDF
Nanocellulose already proved to be a highly relevant material for biomedical applications, ensued by its outstanding mechanical properties and, more importantly, its biocompatibility. Nevertheless, despite their previous intensive research, a notable number of emerging applications are still being developed. Interestingly, this drive is not solely based on the nanocellulose features, but also heavily dependent on sustainability. The three core nanocelluloses encompass cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). All these different types of nanocellulose display highly interesting biomedical properties per se, after modification and when used in composite formulations. Novel applications that use nanocellulose includewell-known areas, namely, wound dressings, implants, indwelling medical devices, scaffolds, and novel printed scaffolds. Their cytotoxicity and biocompatibility using recent methodologies are thoroughly analyzed to reinforce their near future applicability. By analyzing the pristine core nanocellulose, none display cytotoxicity. However, CNF has the highest potential to fail long-term biocompatibility since it tends to trigger inflammation. On the other hand, neverdried BNC displays a remarkable biocompatibility. Despite this, all nanocelluloses clearly represent a flag bearer of future superior biomaterials, being elite materials in the urgent replacement of our petrochemical dependence
