This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Self-ArchivingWe address modern topics of stochastic hydrogeology from their potential relevance to real modeling efforts at the field scale. While the topics of stochastic hydrogeology and numerical modeling have become routine in hydrogeological studies, nondeterministic models have not yet permeated into practitioners. We point out a number of limitations of stochastic modeling when applied to real applications and comment on the reasons why stochastic models fail to become an attractive alternative for practitioners. We specifically separate issues corresponding to flow, conservative transport, and reactive transport. The different topics addressed are emphasis on process modeling, need for upscaling parameters and governing equations, relevance of properly accounting for detailed geological architecture in hydrogeological modeling, and specific challenges of reactive transport. We end up by concluding that the main responsible for nondeterministic models having not yet permeated in industry can be fully attributed to researchers in stochastic hydrogeology.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Transform-based particle filtering for elliptic Bayesian inverse problems
We introduce optimal transport based resampling in adaptive SMC. We consider
elliptic inverse problems of inferring hydraulic conductivity from pressure
measurements. We consider two parametrizations of hydraulic conductivity: by
Gaussian random field, and by a set of scalar (non-)Gaussian distributed
parameters and Gaussian random fields. We show that for scalar parameters
optimal transport based SMC performs comparably to monomial based SMC but for
Gaussian high-dimensional random fields optimal transport based SMC outperforms
monomial based SMC. When comparing to ensemble Kalman inversion with mutation
(EKI), we observe that for Gaussian random fields, optimal transport based SMC
gives comparable or worse performance than EKI depending on the complexity of
the parametrization. For non-Gaussian distributed parameters optimal transport
based SMC outperforms EKI
Coexistence of absolute negative mobility and anomalous diffusion
Using extensive numerical studies we demonstrate that absolute negative
mobility of a Brownian particle (i.e. the net motion into the direction
opposite to a constant biasing force acting around zero bias) does coexist with
anomalous diffusion. The latter is characterized in terms of a nonlinear
scaling with time of the mean-square deviation of the particle position. Such
anomalous diffusion covers "coherent" motion (i.e. the position dynamics x(t)
approaches in evolving time a constant dispersion), ballistic diffusion,
subdiffusion, superdiffusion and hyperdiffusion. In providing evidence for this
coexistence we consider a paradigmatic model of an inertial Brownian particle
moving in a one-dimensional symmetric periodic potential being driven by both
an unbiased time-periodic force and a constant bias. This very setup allows for
various sorts of different physical realizations
Giant coherence in driven systems
We study the noise-induced currents and reliability or coherence of transport
in two different classes of rocking ratchets. For this, we consider the motion
of Brownian particles in the over damped limit in both adiabatic and
non-adiabatic regimes subjected to unbiased temporally symmetric and asymmetric
periodic driving force. In the case of a time symmetric driving, we find that
even in the presence of a spatially symmetric simple sinusoidal potential,
highly coherent transport occurs. These ratchet systems exhibit giant coherence
of transport in the regime of parameter space where unidirectional currents in
the deterministic case are observed. Outside this parameter range, i.e., when
current vanishes in the deterministic regime, coherence in transport is very
low. The transport coherence decreases as a function of temperature and is a
non-monotonic function of the amplitude of driving. The transport becomes
unreliable as we go from the adiabatic to the non-adiabatic domain of
operation.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, replaced by the version to appear in JSTA
R&D on co-working transport schemes in Geant4
A research and development (R&D) project related to the extension of the
Geant4 toolkit has been recently launched to address fundamental methods in
radiation transport simulation. The project focuses on simulation at different
scales in the same experimental environment; this problem requires new methods
across the current boundaries of condensed-random-walk and discrete transport
schemes. The new developments have been motivated by experimental requirements
in various domains, including nanodosimetry, astronomy and detector
developments for high energy physics applications.Comment: To be published in the Proceedings of the CHEP (Computing in High
