    A Supervised Learning Framework for Joint Estimation of Angles-of-Arrival and Number of Sources

    Machine learning is a promising technique for angle-of-arrival (AOA) estimation of waves impinging a sensor array. However, the majority of the methods proposed so far only consider a known, fixed number of impinging waves, i.e., a fixed number of sources (NOS). This paper proposes a machine-learning-based estimator designed for the case when the NOS is variable and hence unknown a priori. The proposed estimator comprises a framework of single-label classifiers. Each classifier predicts if waves are present within certain randomly selected segments of the array\u27s field of view (FOV), resulting from discretising the FOV with a certain (FOV) resolution. The classifiers\u27 predictions are combined into a probabilistic angle spectrum, whereupon the NOS and the AOAs are estimated jointly by applying a probability threshold whose optimal level is learned from data. The estimator\u27s performance is assessed using a new performance metric: the joint AOA estimation success rate. Numerical simulations show that for low SNR (-10 dB), a low FOV resolution (2\ub0) yields a higher success rate than a high resolution (1\ub0), whereas the opposite applies for mid (0 dB) and high (10 dB) SNRs. In nearly all simulations, except one at low SNR and a high FOV resolution, the proposed estimator outperforms the MUSIC algorithm if the maximum allowed AOA estimation error is approximately equal to (or larger than) the FOV resolution

    This research provides a multiscale geomechanical characterization workflow for ultra-tight and anisotropic Goldwyer gas shales by integrating field appraisal, laboratory deformation and ultrasonic testing, viscoelastic modelling, and hydraulic fracture simulation. The outcome of this work addresses few of the practical challenges in unconventional reservoirs including but not limited to (i) microstructure & compositional control on rock mechanical properties, (ii) robust estimation of elastic anisotropy, (iii) viscous stress relaxation to predict the least principal stress Shmin at depth from creep, (iv) influence of specific surface area on creep, and (v) impact of stress layering on hydraulic fracturing design

    Adaptive 3D facial action intensity estimation and emotion recognition

    Automatic recognition of facial emotion has been widely studied for various computer vision tasks (e.g. health monitoring, driver state surveillance and personalized learning). Most existing facial emotion recognition systems, however, either have not fully considered subject-independent dynamic features or were limited to 2D models, thus are not robust enough for real-life recognition tasks with subject variation, head movement and illumination change. Moreover, there is also lack of systematic research on effective newly arrived novel emotion class detection. To address these challenges, we present a real-time 3D facial Action Unit (AU) intensity estimation and emotion recognition system. It automatically selects 16 motion-based facial feature sets using minimal-redundancy–maximal-relevance criterion based optimization and estimates the intensities of 16 diagnostic AUs using feedforward Neural Networks and Support Vector Regressors. We also propose a set of six novel adaptive ensemble classifiers for robust classification of the six basic emotions and the detection of newly arrived unseen novel emotion classes (emotions that are not included in the training set). A distance-based clustering and uncertainty measures of the base classifiers within each ensemble model are used to inform the novel class detection. Evaluated with the Bosphorus 3D database, the system has achieved the best performance of 0.071 overall Mean Squared Error (MSE) for AU intensity estimation using Support Vector Regressors, and 92.2% average accuracy for the recognition of the six basic emotions using the proposed ensemble classifiers. In comparison with other related work, our research outperforms other state-of-the-art research on 3D facial emotion recognition for the Bosphorus database. Moreover, in on-line real-time evaluation with real human subjects, the proposed system also shows superior real-time performance with 84% recognition accuracy and great flexibility and adaptation for newly arrived novel (e.g. ‘contempt’ which is not included in the six basic emotions) emotion detection

    A Comprehensive Survey on the Cyber-Security of Smart Grids: Cyber-Attacks, Detection, Countermeasure Techniques, and Future Directions

    One of the significant challenges that smart grid networks face is cyber-security. Several studies have been conducted to highlight those security challenges. However, the majority of these surveys classify attacks based on the security requirements, confidentiality, integrity, and availability, without taking into consideration the accountability requirement. In addition, some of these surveys focused on the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) model, which does not differentiate between the application, session, and presentation and the data link and physical layers of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model. In this survey paper, we provide a classification of attacks based on the OSI model and discuss in more detail the cyber-attacks that can target the different layers of smart grid networks communication. We also propose new classifications for the detection and countermeasure techniques and describe existing techniques under each category. Finally, we discuss challenges and future research directions

    Neural Network Models for Nuclear Treaty Monitoring: Enhancing the Seismic Signal Pipeline with Deep Temporal Convolution

    Seismic signal processing at the IDC is critical to global security, facilitating the detection and identification of covert nuclear tests in near-real time. This dissertation details three research studies providing substantial enhancements to this pipeline. Study 1 focuses on signal detection, employing a TCN architecture directly against raw real-time data streams and effecting a 4 dB increase in detector sensitivity over the latest operational methods. Study 2 focuses on both event association and source discrimination, utilizing a TCN-based triplet network to extract source-specific features from three-component seismograms, and providing both a complimentary validation measure for event association and a one-shot classifier for template-based source discrimination. Finally, Study 3 focuses on event localization, and employs a TCN architecture against three-component seismograms in order to confidently predict backazimuth angle and provide a three-fold increase in usable picks over traditional polarization analysis

    Indoor Localization Using Channel State Information with Regression Artificial Neural Network

    RÉSUMÉ Dans cette recherche, les informations sur l'état du canal (CSI) sont utilisées pour localiser les stations mobiles dans un environnement intérieur. À cette fin, deux ordinateurs portables équipés de la carte Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Wireless Link 5300 disponible dans le commerce sont utilisés. Les informations CSI sont collectées en établissant une connexion sans fil entre deux machines de plus de 200, 70 et 52 points de référence (RP) aux sixième, cinquième et troisième étages respectivement, dans l’immeuble Lassonde de Polytechnique Montréal servant de banc d’essai expérimental. Différentes approches de localisation sont étudiées et comparées les unes aux autres en termes de précision de localisation. Dans la première approche, les CSI collectés alimentent directement le réseau de neurones artificiels (RNA) en tant que caractéristiques d’entrée et le RNA appris est utilisé en tant qu’algorithme de correspondance du modèle afin de prédire la position de l’utilisateur. La deuxième approche consiste à appliquer à l’entrée de RNA les paramètres pertinents du canal extrait représentant le nombre réduit d’entités à l’entrée de RNA. Enfin, une exploration est effectuée pour trouver la meilleure configuration de couches cachées et de facteurs d'étalement pour les réseaux Perceptron multicouche (MLP) et Réseaux de neurones à régression générale (GRNN), respectivement.----------ABSTRACT In this research, the Channel State Information (CSI) is leveraged to locate mobile stations in an indoor environment. For this purpose, two laptops equipped with the off-the-shelf Intel Wi-Fi Wireless Link 5300 (NIC card) are used. CSI information is collected by establishing a wireless connection between two machines over 200, 70 and 52 reference points (RP) on sixth, fifth, and third floors respectively, in Lassonde building of Polytechnique Montreal as the experimental testbed. Different geolocation approaches are investigated and compared with each other in terms of location accuracy and precision. In the first approach, the collected CSIs are directly fed to the artificial neural network (ANN) as input features and the learned ANN is used as the patternmatching algorithm in order to predict the user’s location. The second approach consists in applying at the input of the ANN the extracted channel relevant parameters representing the reduced number of features at the input of ANN. Finally, exploration is performed to find the best configuration of hidden layers and spread factors for Multilayer Perceptron (MLPs) and General Regression Neural Networks (GRNNs), respectively

    A future for intelligent autonomous ocean observing systems

    Ocean scientists have dreamed of and recently started to realize an ocean observing revolution with autonomous observing platforms and sensors. Critical questions to be answered by such autonomous systems are where, when, and what to sample for optimal information, and how to optimally reach the sampling locations. Definitions, concepts, and progress towards answering these questions using quantitative predictions and fundamental principles are presented. Results in reachability and path planning, adaptive sampling, machine learning, and teaming machines with scientists are overviewed. The integrated use of differential equations and theory from varied disciplines is emphasized. The results provide an inference engine and knowledge base for expert autonomous observing systems. They are showcased using a set of recent at-sea campaigns and realistic simulations. Real-time experiments with identical autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in the Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound region first show that our predicted time-optimal paths were faster than shortest distance paths. Deterministic and probabilistic reachability and path forecasts issued and validated for gliders and floats in the northern Arabian Sea are then presented. Novel Bayesian adaptive sampling for hypothesis testing and optimal learning are finally shown to forecast the observations most informative to estimate the accuracy of model formulations, the values of ecosystem parameters and dynamic fields, and the presence of Lagrangian Coherent Structures

    IceCube -- Neutrinos in Deep Ice The Top 3 Solutions from the Public Kaggle Competition

    During the public Kaggle competition "IceCube -- Neutrinos in Deep Ice", thousands of reconstruction algorithms were created and submitted, aiming to estimate the direction of neutrino events recorded by the IceCube detector. Here we describe in detail the three ultimate best, award-winning solutions. The data handling, architecture, and training process of each of these machine learning models is laid out, followed up by an in-depth comparison of the performance on the kaggle datatset. We show that on cascade events in IceCube above 10 TeV, the best kaggle solution is able to achieve an angular resolution of better than 5 degrees, and for tracks correspondingly better than 0.5 degrees. These performance measures compare favourably to the current state-of-the-art in the field
