Solving the Selesnick-Burrus Filter Design Equations Using Computational Algebra and Algebraic Geometry
In a recent paper, I. Selesnick and C.S. Burrus developed a design method for
maximally flat FIR low-pass digital filters with reduced group delay. Their
approach leads to a system of polynomial equations depending on three integer
design parameters . In certain cases (their ``Region I''), Selesnick and
Burrus were able to derive solutions using only linear algebra; for the
remaining cases ("Region II''), they proposed using Gr\"obner bases. This paper
introduces a different method, based on multipolynomial resultants, for
analyzing and solving the Selesnick-Burrus design equations. The results of
calculations are presented, and some patterns concerning the number of
solutions as a function of the design parameters are proved.Comment: 34 pages, 2 .eps figure

ShearLab 3D: Faithful Digital Shearlet Transforms based on Compactly Supported Shearlets
Wavelets and their associated transforms are highly efficient when
approximating and analyzing one-dimensional signals. However, multivariate
signals such as images or videos typically exhibit curvilinear singularities,
which wavelets are provably deficient of sparsely approximating and also of
analyzing in the sense of, for instance, detecting their direction. Shearlets
are a directional representation system extending the wavelet framework, which
overcomes those deficiencies. Similar to wavelets, shearlets allow a faithful
implementation and fast associated transforms. In this paper, we will introduce
a comprehensive carefully documented software package coined ShearLab 3D
(www.ShearLab.org) and discuss its algorithmic details. This package provides
MATLAB code for a novel faithful algorithmic realization of the 2D and 3D
shearlet transform (and their inverses) associated with compactly supported
universal shearlet systems incorporating the option of using CUDA. We will
present extensive numerical experiments in 2D and 3D concerning denoising,
inpainting, and feature extraction, comparing the performance of ShearLab 3D
with similar transform-based algorithms such as curvelets, contourlets, or

The Total In-Flight Simulator (TIFS) aerodynamics and systems: Description and analysis
The aerodynamics, control system, instrumentation complement and recording system of the USAF Total In/Flight Simulator (TIFS) airplane are described. A control system that would allow the ailerons to be operated collectively, as well as, differentially to entrance the ability of the vehicle to perform the dual function of maneuver load control and gust alleviation is emphasized. Mathematical prediction of the rigid body and the flexible equations of longitudinal motion using the level 2.01 FLEXSTAB program are included along with a definition of the vehicle geometry, the mass and stiffness distribution, the calculated mode frequencies and mode shapes, and the resulting aerodynamic equations of motion of the flexible vehicle. A complete description of the control and instrumentation system of the aircraft is presented, including analysis, ground test and flight data comparisons of the performance and bandwidth of the aerodynamic surface servos. Time-causal and time-recursive spatio-temporal receptive fields
We present an improved model and theory for time-causal and time-recursive
spatio-temporal receptive fields, based on a combination of Gaussian receptive
fields over the spatial domain and first-order integrators or equivalently
truncated exponential filters coupled in cascade over the temporal domain.
Compared to previous spatio-temporal scale-space formulations in terms of
non-enhancement of local extrema or scale invariance, these receptive fields
are based on different scale-space axiomatics over time by ensuring
non-creation of new local extrema or zero-crossings with increasing temporal
scale. Specifically, extensions are presented about (i) parameterizing the
intermediate temporal scale levels, (ii) analysing the resulting temporal
dynamics, (iii) transferring the theory to a discrete implementation, (iv)
computing scale-normalized spatio-temporal derivative expressions for
spatio-temporal feature detection and (v) computational modelling of receptive
fields in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and the primary visual cortex
(V1) in biological vision.
We show that by distributing the intermediate temporal scale levels according
to a logarithmic distribution, we obtain much faster temporal response
properties (shorter temporal delays) compared to a uniform distribution.
Specifically, these kernels converge very rapidly to a limit kernel possessing
true self-similar scale-invariant properties over temporal scales, thereby
allowing for true scale invariance over variations in the temporal scale,
although the underlying temporal scale-space representation is based on a
discretized temporal scale parameter.
We show how scale-normalized temporal derivatives can be defined for these
time-causal scale-space kernels and how the composed theory can be used for
computing basic types of scale-normalized spatio-temporal derivative
