Leader Election in Anonymous Rings: Franklin Goes Probabilistic
We present a probabilistic leader election algorithm for anonymous, bidirectional, asynchronous rings. It is based on an algorithm from Franklin, augmented with random identity selection, hop counters to detect identity clashes, and round numbers modulo 2. As a result, the algorithm is finite-state, so that various model checking techniques can be employed to verify its correctness, that is, eventually a unique leader is elected with probability one. We also sketch a formal correctness proof of the algorithm for rings with arbitrary size
Separation of Circulating Tokens
Self-stabilizing distributed control is often modeled by token abstractions.
A system with a single token may implement mutual exclusion; a system with
multiple tokens may ensure that immediate neighbors do not simultaneously enjoy
a privilege. For a cyber-physical system, tokens may represent physical objects
whose movement is controlled. The problem studied in this paper is to ensure
that a synchronous system with m circulating tokens has at least d distance
between tokens. This problem is first considered in a ring where d is given
whilst m and the ring size n are unknown. The protocol solving this problem can
be uniform, with all processes running the same program, or it can be
non-uniform, with some processes acting only as token relays. The protocol for
this first problem is simple, and can be expressed with Petri net formalism. A
second problem is to maximize d when m is given, and n is unknown. For the
second problem, the paper presents a non-uniform protocol with a single

Improving Connectionist Energy Minimization
Symmetric networks designed for energy minimization such as Boltzman machines
and Hopfield nets are frequently investigated for use in optimization,
constraint satisfaction and approximation of NP-hard problems. Nevertheless,
finding a global solution (i.e., a global minimum for the energy function) is
not guaranteed and even a local solution may take an exponential number of
steps. We propose an improvement to the standard local activation function used
for such networks. The improved algorithm guarantees that a global minimum is
found in linear time for tree-like subnetworks. The algorithm, called activate,
is uniform and does not assume that the network is tree-like. It can identify
tree-like subnetworks even in cyclic topologies (arbitrary networks) and avoid
local minima along these trees. For acyclic networks, the algorithm is
guaranteed to converge to a global minimum from any initial state of the system
(self-stabilization) and remains correct under various types of schedulers. On
the negative side, we show that in the presence of cycles, no uniform algorithm
exists that guarantees optimality even under a sequential asynchronous
scheduler. An asynchronous scheduler can activate only one unit at a time while
a synchronous scheduler can activate any number of units in a single time step.
In addition, no uniform algorithm exists to optimize even acyclic networks when
the scheduler is synchronous. Finally, we show how the algorithm can be
improved using the cycle-cutset scheme. The general algorithm, called
activate-with-cutset, improves over activate and has some performance

Self-stabilizing K-out-of-L exclusion on tree network
In this paper, we address the problem of K-out-of-L exclusion, a
generalization of the mutual exclusion problem, in which there are units
of a shared resource, and any process can request up to units
(). We propose the first deterministic self-stabilizing
distributed K-out-of-L exclusion protocol in message-passing systems for
asynchronous oriented tree networks which assumes bounded local memory for each

Bounds for self-stabilization in unidirectional networks
A distributed algorithm is self-stabilizing if after faults and attacks hit
the system and place it in some arbitrary global state, the systems recovers
from this catastrophic situation without external intervention in finite time.
Unidirectional networks preclude many common techniques in self-stabilization
from being used, such as preserving local predicates. In this paper, we
investigate the intrinsic complexity of achieving self-stabilization in
unidirectional networks, and focus on the classical vertex coloring problem.
When deterministic solutions are considered, we prove a lower bound of
states per process (where is the network size) and a recovery time of at
least actions in total. We present a deterministic algorithm with
matching upper bounds that performs in arbitrary graphs. When probabilistic
solutions are considered, we observe that at least states per
process and a recovery time of actions in total are required (where
denotes the maximal degree of the underlying simple undirected graph).
We present a probabilistically self-stabilizing algorithm that uses
states per process, where is a parameter of the

Asynchronous neighborhood task synchronization
Faults are likely to occur in distributed systems. The motivation for designing self-stabilizing system is to be able to automatically recover from a faulty state. As per Dijkstra\u27s definition, a system is self-stabilizing if it converges to a desired state from an arbitrary state in a finite number of steps. The paradigm of self-stabilization is considered to be the most unified approach to designing fault-tolerant systems. Any type of faults, e.g., transient, process crashes and restart, link failures and recoveries, and byzantine faults, can be handled by a self-stabilizing system; Many applications in distributed systems involve multiple phases. Solving these applications require some degree of synchronization of phases. In this thesis research, we introduce a new problem, called asynchronous neighborhood task synchronization ( NTS ). In this problem, processes execute infinite instances of tasks, where a task consists of a set of steps. There are several requirements for this problem. Simultaneous execution of steps by the neighbors is allowed only if the steps are different. Every neighborhood is synchronized in the sense that all neighboring processes execute the same instance of a task. Although the NTS problem is applicable in nonfaulty environments, it is more challenging to solve this problem considering various types of faults. In this research, we will present a self-stabilizing solution to the NTS problem. The proposed solution is space optimal, fault containing, fully localized, and fully distributed. One of the most desirable properties of our algorithm is that it works under any (including unfair) daemon. We will discuss various applications of the NTS problem
Self-stabilizing protocol for anonymous oriented bi-directional rings under unfair distributed schedulers with a leader
We propose a self-stabilizing protocol for anonymous oriented bi-directional rings of any size under unfair distributed schedulers with a leader. The protocol is a randomized self-stabilizing, meaning that starting from an arbitrary configuration it converges (with probability 1) in finite time to a legitimate configuration (i.e. global system state) without the need for explicit exception handler of backward recovery. A fault may throw the system into an illegitimate configuration, but the system will autonomously resume a legitimate configuration, by regarding the current illegitimate configuration as an initial configuration, if the fault is transient. A self-stabilizing system thus tolerates any kind and any finite number of transient faults. Self-Stabilization in the Distributed Systems of Finite State Machines
The notion of self-stabilization was first proposed by Dijkstra in 1974 in his classic paper. The paper defines a system as self-stabilizing if, starting at any, possibly illegitimate, state the system can automatically adjust itself to eventually converge to a legitimate state in finite amount of time and once in a legitimate state it will remain so unless it incurs a subsequent transient fault. Dijkstra limited his attention to a ring of finite-state machines and provided its solution for self-stabilization. In the years following his introduction, very few papers were published in this area. Once his proposal was recognized as a milestone in work on fault tolerance, the notion propagated among the researchers rapidly and many researchers in the distributed systems diverted their attention to it. The investigation and use of self-stabilization as an approach to fault-tolerant behavior under a model of transient failures for distributed systems is now undergoing a renaissance. A good number of works pertaining to self-stabilization in the distributed systems were proposed in the yesteryears most of which are very recent. This report surveys all previous works available in the literature of self-stabilizing systems
Dynamic FTSS in Asynchronous Systems: the Case of Unison
Distributed fault-tolerance can mask the effect of a limited number of
permanent faults, while self-stabilization provides forward recovery after an
arbitrary number of transient fault hit the system. FTSS protocols combine the
best of both worlds since they are simultaneously fault-tolerant and
self-stabilizing. To date, FTSS solutions either consider static (i.e. fixed
point) tasks, or assume synchronous scheduling of the system components. In
this paper, we present the first study of dynamic tasks in asynchronous
systems, considering the unison problem as a benchmark. Unison can be seen as a
local clock synchronization problem as neighbors must maintain digital clocks
at most one time unit away from each other, and increment their own clock value
infinitely often. We present many impossibility results for this difficult
problem and propose a FTSS solution when the problem is solvable that exhibits
optimal fault containment
Self-Stabilizing Repeated Balls-into-Bins
We study the following synchronous process that we call "repeated
balls-into-bins". The process is started by assigning balls to bins in
an arbitrary way. In every subsequent round, from each non-empty bin one ball
is chosen according to some fixed strategy (random, FIFO, etc), and re-assigned
to one of the bins uniformly at random.
We define a configuration "legitimate" if its maximum load is
