Reinforcement learning based local search for grouping problems: A case study on graph coloring
Grouping problems aim to partition a set of items into multiple mutually
disjoint subsets according to some specific criterion and constraints. Grouping
problems cover a large class of important combinatorial optimization problems
that are generally computationally difficult. In this paper, we propose a
general solution approach for grouping problems, i.e., reinforcement learning
based local search (RLS), which combines reinforcement learning techniques with
descent-based local search. The viability of the proposed approach is verified
on a well-known representative grouping problem (graph coloring) where a very
simple descent-based coloring algorithm is applied. Experimental studies on
popular DIMACS and COLOR02 benchmark graphs indicate that RLS achieves
competitive performances compared to a number of well-known coloring
algorithms
Comparing metaheuristic algorithms for error detection in Java programs
Chicano, F., Ferreira M., & Alba E. (2011). Comparing Metaheuristic Algorithms for Error Detection in Java Programs. In Proceedings of Search Based Software Engineering, Szeged, Hungary, September 10-12, 2011. pp. 82–96.Model checking is a fully automatic technique for checking concurrent software properties in which the states of a concurrent system are explored in an explicit or implicit way. The main drawback of this technique is the high memory consumption, which limits the size of the programs that can be checked. In the last years, some researchers have focused on the application of guided non-complete stochastic techniques to the search of the state space of such concurrent programs. In this paper, we compare five metaheuristic algorithms for this problem. The algorithms are Simulated Annealing, Ant Colony Optimization, Particle Swarm Optimization and two variants of Genetic Algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that Simulated Annealing has been applied to the problem. We use in the comparison a benchmark composed of 17 Java concurrent programs. We also compare the results of these algorithms with the ones of deterministic algorithms.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech. A hybrid CFGTSA based approach for scheduling problem: a case study of an automobile industry
In the global competitive world swift, reliable and cost effective production subject to uncertain situations, through an appropriate management of the available resources, has turned out to be the necessity for surviving in the market. This inspired the development of the more efficient and robust methods to counteract the existing complexities prevailing in the market. The present paper proposes a hybrid CFGTSA algorithm inheriting the salient features of GA, TS, SA, and chaotic theory to solve the complex scheduling problems commonly faced by most of the manufacturing industries. The proposed CFGTSA algorithm has been tested on a scheduling problem of an automobile industry, and its efficacy has been shown by comparing the results with GA, SA, TS, GTS, and hybrid TSA algorithms

GA/SA-based hybrid techniques for the scheduling of generator maintenance in power systems
YesProposes the application of a genetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA) based hybrid approach for the scheduling of generator maintenance in power systems using an integer representation. The adapted approach uses the probabilistic acceptance criterion of simulated annealing within the genetic algorithm framework. A case study is formulated in this paper as an integer programming problem using a reliability-based objective function and typical problem constraints. The implementation and performance of the solution technique are discussed. The results in this paper demonstrate that the technique is more effective than approaches based solely on genetic algorithms or solely on simulated annealing. It therefore proves to be a valid approach for the solution of generator maintenance scheduling problem
