    Sparse Localization with a Mobile Beacon Based on LU Decomposition in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Node localization is the core in wireless sensor network. It can be solved by powerful beacons, which are equipped with global positioning system devices to know their location information. In this article, we present a novel sparse localization approach with a mobile beacon based on LU decomposition. Our scheme firstly translates node localization problem into a 1-sparse vector recovery problem by establishing sparse localization model. Then, LU decomposition pre-processing is adopted to solve the problem that measurement matrix does not meet the re¬stricted isometry property. Later, the 1-sparse vector can be exactly recovered by compressive sensing. Finally, as the 1-sparse vector is approximate sparse, weighted Cen¬troid scheme is introduced to accurately locate the node. Simulation and analysis show that our scheme has better localization performance and lower requirement for the mobile beacon than MAP+GC, MAP-M, and MAP-M&N schemes. In addition, the obstacles and DOI have little effect on the novel scheme, and it has great localization performance under low SNR, thus, the scheme proposed is robust

    INDOOR-WIRELESS LOCATION TECHNIQUES AND ALGORITHMS UTILIZING UHF RFID AND BLE TECHNOLOGIES

    The work presented herein explores the ability of Ultra High Frequency Radio Frequency (UHF RF) devices, specifically (Radio Frequency Identification) RFID passive tags and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to be used as tools to locate items of interest inside a building. Localization Systems based on these technologies are commercially available, but have failed to be widely adopted due to significant drawbacks in the accuracy and reliability of state of the art systems. It is the goal of this work to address that issue by identifying and potentially improving upon localization algorithms. The work presented here breaks the process of localization into distance estimations and trilateration algorithms to use those estimations to determine a 2D location. Distance estimations are the largest error source in trilateration. Several methods are proposed to improve speed and accuracy of measurements using additional information from frequency variations and phase angle information. Adding information from the characteristic signature of multipath signals allowed for a significant reduction in distance estimation error for both BLE and RFID which was quantified using neural network optimization techniques. The resulting error reduction algorithm was generalizable to completely new environments with very different multipath behavior and was a significant contribution of this work. Another significant contribution of this work is the experimental comparison of trilateration algorithms, which tested new and existing methods of trilateration for accuracy in a controlled environment using the same data sets. Several new or improved methods of triangulation are presented as well as traditional methods from the literature in the analysis. The Antenna Pattern Method represents a new way of compensating for the antenna radiation pattern and its potential impact on signal strength, which is also an important contribution of this effort. The performance of each algorithm for multiple types of inputs are compared and the resulting error matrix allows a potential system designer to select the best option given the particular system constraints

    Experimental study on RSS based indoor positioning algorithms

    This work compares the performance of indoor positioning systems suitable for low power wireless sensor networks. The research goal is to study positioning techniques that are compatible with real-time positioning in wireless sensor networks, having low-power and low complexity as requirements. Map matching, approximate positioning (weighted centroid) and exact positioning algorithms (least squares) were tested and compared in a small predefined indoor environment. We found that, for our test scenario, weighted centroid algorithms provide better results than map matching. Least squares proved to be completely unreliable when using distances obtained by the one-slope propagation model. Major improvements in the positioning error were found when body influence was removed from the test scenario. The results show that the positioning error can be improved if the body effect in received signal strength is accounted for in the algorithms.Helder D.     Development an accurate and stable range-free localization scheme for anisotropic wireless sensor networks

    With the high-speed development of wireless radio technology, numerous sensor nodes are integrated into wireless sensor networks, which has promoted plentiful location-based applications that are successfully applied in various fields, such as monitoring natural disasters and post-disaster rescue. Location information is an integral part of wireless sensor networks, without location information, all received data will lose meaning. However, the current localization scheme is based on equipped GPS on every node, which is not cost-efficient and not suitable for large-scale wireless sensor networks and outdoor environments. To address this problem, research scholars have proposed a rangefree localization scheme which only depends on network connectivity. Nevertheless, as the representative range-free localization scheme, Distance Vector-Hop (DV-Hop) localization algorithm demonstrates extremely poor localization accuracy under anisotropic wireless sensor networks. The previous works assumed that the network environment is evenly and uniformly distributed, ignored anisotropic factors in a real setting. Besides, most research academics improved the localization accuracy to a certain degree, but at expense of high communication overhead and computational complexity, which cannot meet the requirements of high-precision applications for anisotropic wireless sensor networks. Hence, finding a fast, accurate, and strong solution to solve the range-free localization problem is still a big challenge. Accordingly, this study aspires to bridge the research gap by exploring a new DV-Hop algorithm to build a fast, costefficient, strong range-free localization scheme. This study developed an optimized variation of the DV-Hop localization algorithm for anisotropic wireless sensor networks. To address the poor localization accuracy problem in irregular C-shaped network topology, it adopts an efficient Grew Wolf Optimizer instead of the least-squares method. The dynamic communication range is introduced to refine hop between anchor nodes, and new parameters are recommended to optimize network protocol to balance energy cost in the initial step. Besides, the weighted coefficient and centroid algorithm is employed to reduce cumulative error by hop count and cut down computational complexity. The developed localization framework is separately validated and evaluated each optimized step under various evaluation criteria, in terms of accuracy, stability, and cost, etc. The results of EGWO-DV-Hop demonstrated superior localization accuracy under both topologies, the average localization error dropped up to 87.79% comparing with basic DV-Hop under C-shaped topology. The developed enhanced DWGWO-DVHop localization algorithm illustrated a favorable result with high accuracy and strong stability. The overall localization error is around 1.5m under C-shaped topology, while the traditional DV-Hop algorithm is large than 20m. Generally, the average localization error went down up to 93.35%, compared with DV-Hop. The localization accuracy and robustness of comparison indicated that the developed DWGWO-DV-Hop algorithm super outperforms the other classical range-free methods. It has the potential significance to be guided and applied in practical location-based applications for anisotropic wireless sensor networks

    Improvement of range-free localization technology by a novel DV-hop protocol in wireless sensor networks

    International audienceLocalization is a fundamental issue for many applications in wireless sensor networks. Without the need of additional ranging devices, the range-free localization technology is a cost-effective solution for low-cost indoor and outdoor wireless sensor networks. Among range-free algorithms, DV-hop (Distance Vector - hop) has the advantage to localize the mobile nodes which has less than three neighbour anchors. Based on the original DV-hop algorithm, this paper presents two improved algorithms (Checkout DV-hop and Selective 3-Anchor DV-hop). Checkout DV-hop algorithm estimates the mobile node position by using the nearest anchor, while Selective 3-Anchor DV-hop algorithm chooses the best 3 anchors to improve localization accuracy. Then, in order to implement these DV-hop based algorithms in network scenarios, a novel DV-hop localization protocol is proposed. This new protocol is presented in detail in this paper, including the format of data payloads, the improved collision reduction method E-CSMA/CA, as well as parameters used in deciding the end of each DV-hop step. Finally, using our localization protocol, we investigate the performance of typical DV-hop based algorithms in terms of localization accuracy, mobility, synchronization and overhead. Simulation results prove that Selective 3-Anchor DV-hop algorithm offers the best performance compared to Checkout DV-hop and the original DV-hop algorithm

    Low-cost commodity hardware and cheaper, more capable consumer-grade drones make the threat of home-made, inexpensive drone-mounted wireless attack platforms (DWAPs) greater than ever. Fences and physical security do little to impede a drone from approaching private, commercial, or government wireless access points (WAPs) and conducting wireless attacks. At the same time, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) present a valuable tool for network defenders conducting site surveys and emulating threats. These platforms present near-term dangers and opportunities for corporations and governments. Despite the vast leaps in technology these capabilities represent, UAVs are noisy and consequently difficult to conceal as they approach a potential target; stealth is a valuable asset to an attacker. Using a directional antenna instead of the typical omnidirectional antenna would significantly increase the distance from which a DWAP may conduct attacks and would improve their stealthiness and overall effectiveness. This research seeks to investigate the possibility of using directional antennae on DWAPs by resolving issues inhibiting directional antennae use on consumer and hobbyist drone platforms. This research presents the hypothesis that a DWAP equipped with a directional antenna can predict bearings and locations of WAPs within an acceptable margin of error

    Modeling and Implementation of Wireless Sensor Networks for Logistics Applications

    Logistics has experienced a long time of developments and improvements based on the advanced vehicle technologies, transportation systems, traffic network extension and logistics processes. In the last decades, the complexity has increased significantly and this has created complex logistics networks over multiple continents. Because of the close cooperation, these logistics networks are highly dependent on each other in sharing and processing the logistics information. Every customer has many suppliers and vice versa. The conventional centralized control continues but reaches some limitations such as the different distribution of suppliers, the complexity and flexibility of processing orders or the dynamics of the logistic objects. In order to overcome these disadvantages, the paradigm of autonomous logistics is proposed and promises a better technical solution for current logistics systems. In autonomous logistics, the decision making is shifted toward the logistic objects which are defined as material items (e.g., vehicles, containers) or immaterial items (e.g., customer orders) of a networked logistics system. These objects have the ability to interact with each other and make decisions according to their own objectives. In the technical aspect, with the rapid development of innovative sensor technology, namely Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), each element in the network can self-organize and interact with other elements for information transmission. The attachment of an electronic sensor element into a logistic object will create an autonomous environment in both the communication and the logistic domain. With this idea, the requirements of logistics can be fulfilled; for example, the monitoring data can be precise, comprehensive and timely. In addition, the goods flow management can be transferred to the information logistic object management, which is easier by the help of information technologies. However, in order to transmit information between these logistic objects, one requirement is that a routing protocol is necessary. The Opportunistic relative Distance-Enabled Uni-cast Routing (ODEUR ) protocol which is proposed and investigated in this thesis shows that it can be used in autonomous environments like autonomous logistics. Moreover, the support of mobility, multiple sinks and auto-connection in this protocol enhances the dynamics of logistic objects. With a general model which covers a range from low-level issues to high-level protocols, many services such as real time monitoring of environmental conditions, context-aware applications and localization make the logistic objects (embedded with sensor equipment) more advanced in information communication and data processing. The distributed management service in each sensor node allows the flexible configuration of logistic items at any time during the transportation. All of these integrated features introduce a new technical solution for smart logistic items and intelligent transportation systems. In parallel, a management system, WSN data Collection and Management System (WiSeCoMaSys), is designed to interact with the deployed Wireless Sensor Networks. This tool allows the user to easily manipulate the sensor networks remotely. With its rich set of features such as real time data monitoring, data analysis and visualization, per-node management, and alerts, this tool helps both developers and users in the design and deployment of a sensor network. In addition, an analytical model is developed for comparison with the results from simulations and experiments. Focusing on the use of probability theory to model the network links, this model considers several important factors such as packet reception rate and network traffic which are used in the simulation and experiment parts. Moreover, the comparison between simulation, experiment and analytical results is also carried out to estimate the accuracy of the design and make several improvements of the simulation accuracy. Finally, all of the above parts are integrated in one unique system. This system is verified by both simulations in logistic scenarios (e.g., harbors, warehouses and containers) and experiments. The results show that the proposed model and protocol have a good packet delivery rate, little memory requirements and low delay.
