    Development and Flight of a Robust Optical-Inertial Navigation System Using Low-Cost Sensors

    This research develops and tests a precision navigation algorithm fusing optical and inertial measurements of unknown objects at unknown locations. It provides an alternative to the Global Positioning System (GPS) as a precision navigation source, enabling passive and low-cost navigation in situations where GPS is denied/unavailable. This paper describes two new contributions. First, a rigorous study of the fundamental nature of optical/inertial navigation is accomplished by examining the observability grammian of the underlying measurement equations. This analysis yields a set of design principles guiding the development of optical/inertial navigation algorithms. The second contribution of this research is the development and flight test of an optical-inertial navigation system using low-cost and passive sensors (including an inexpensive commercial-grade inertial sensor, which is unsuitable for navigation by itself). This prototype system was built and flight tested at the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School. The algorithm that was implemented leveraged the design principles described above, and used images from a single camera. It was shown (and explained by the observability analysis) that the system gained significant performance by aiding it with a barometric altimeter and magnetic compass, and by using a digital terrain database (DTED). The (still) low-cost and passive system demonstrated performance comparable to high quality navigation-grade inertial navigation systems, which cost an order of magnitude more than this optical-inertial prototype. The resultant performance of the system tested provides a robust and practical navigation solution for Air Force aircraft

    Trajectory determination and analysis in sports by satellite and inertial navigation

    This research presents methods for performance analysis in sports through the integration of Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements with Inertial Navigation System (INS). The described approach focuses on strapdown inertial navigation using Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) Inertial Measurement Units (IMU). A simple inertial error model is proposed and its relevance is proven by comparison to reference data. The concept is then extended to a setup employing several MEMS-IMUs in parallel. The performance of the system is validated with experiments in skiing and motorcycling. The position accuracy achieved with the integrated system varies from decimeter level with dual-frequency differential GPS (DGPS) to 0.7 m for low-cost, single-frequency DGPS. Unlike the position, the velocity accuracy (0.2 m/s) and orientation accuracy (1 – 2 deg) are almost insensitive to the choice of the receiver hardware. The orientation performance, however, is improved by 30 – 50% when integrating four MEMS-IMUs in skew-redundant configuration. Later part of this research introduces a methodology for trajectory comparison. It is shown that trajectories based on dual-frequency GPS positions can be directly modeled and compared using cubic spline smoothing, while those derived from single-frequency DGPS require additional filtering and matching

    Innovative Solutions for Navigation and Mission Management of Unmanned Aircraft Systems

    The last decades have witnessed a significant increase in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) of all shapes and sizes. UAS are finding many new applications in supporting several human activities, offering solutions to many dirty, dull, and dangerous missions, carried out by military and civilian users. However, limited access to the airspace is the principal barrier to the realization of the full potential that can be derived from UAS capabilities. The aim of this thesis is to support the safe integration of UAS operations, taking into account both the user's requirements and flight regulations. The main technical and operational issues, considered among the principal inhibitors to the integration and wide-spread acceptance of UAS, are identified and two solutions for safe UAS operations are proposed: A. Improving navigation performance of UAS by exploiting low-cost sensors. To enhance the performance of the low-cost and light-weight integrated navigation system based on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) inertial sensors, an efficient calibration method for MEMS inertial sensors is required. Two solutions are proposed: 1) The innovative Thermal Compensated Zero Velocity Update (TCZUPT) filter, which embeds the compensation of thermal effect on bias in the filter itself and uses Back-Propagation Neural Networks to build the calibration function. Experimental results show that the TCZUPT filter is faster than the traditional ZUPT filter in mapping significant bias variations and presents better performance in the overall testing period. Moreover, no calibration pre-processing stage is required to keep measurement drift under control, improving the accuracy, reliability, and maintainability of the processing software; 2) A redundant configuration of consumer grade inertial sensors to obtain a self-calibration of typical inertial sensors biases. The result is a significant reduction of uncertainty in attitude determination. In conclusion, both methods improve dead-reckoning performance for handling intermittent GNSS coverage. B. Proposing novel solutions for mission management to support the Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) system in monitoring and coordinating the operations of a large number of UAS. Two solutions are proposed: 1) A trajectory prediction tool for small UAS, based on Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ) Neural Networks. By exploiting flight data collected when the UAS executes a pre-assigned flight path, the tool is able to predict the time taken to fly generic trajectory elements. Moreover, being self-adaptive in constructing a mathematical model, LVQ Neural Networks allow creating different models for the different UAS types in several environmental conditions; 2) A software tool aimed at supporting standardized procedures for decision-making process to identify UAS/payload configurations suitable for any type of mission that can be authorized standing flight regulations. The proposed methods improve the management and safe operation of large-scale UAS missions, speeding up the flight authorization process by the UTM system and supporting the increasing level of autonomy in UAS operations

    Methods and good practice guidelines for human joint kinematics estimation through magnetic and inertial wearable sensors

    According to the World Health Organization, the ability to move is recognized as a key factor for the human well-being. From the wearable Magnetic and Inertial Measurement Units (MIMUs) signals it is possible to extract several digital mobility outcomes including the joint kinematics. To this end, it is first required to estimate the orientation of the MIMUs by means of a sensor fusion algorithm (SFA). After that, the relative orientation is computed and then decomposed to obtain the joint angles. However, the MIMUs do not provide a direct output of the physical quantity of interest which can be only determined after an ad hoc processing of their signals. It follows that the joint angle accuracy mostly depends on multiple factors. The first one is the magnitude of the MIMU measurements errors and up to date there is still a lack of methods for their characterization. A second crucial factor is the choice of the SFA to use. Despite the abundance of formulations in the literature, no-well established conclusions about their accuracy have been reached yet. The last factor is the biomechanical model used to compute the joint angles. In this context, unconstrained methods offer a simple way to decompose the relative orientation using the Euler angles but suffer from the inherent issues related to the SFA. In contrast, constrained approaches aim at increasing the robustness of the estimates by adopting models in which an objective function is minimized through the definition of physiological constraints. This thesis proposed the methods to accurately estimate the human joint kinematics starting from the MIMU signals. Three main contributions were provided. The first consisted in the design of a comprehensive battery of tests to completely characterize the sources of errors affecting the quality of the measurements. These tests rely on simple hypotheses based on the sensor working principles and do not require expensive equipment. Nine parameters were defined to quantify the signal accuracy improvements (if any) of 24 MIMUs before and after the refinement of their calibration coefficients. The second contribution was focused on the SFAs. Ten among the most popular SFAs were compared under different experimental conditions including different MIMU models and rotation rate magnitudes. To perform a “fair” comparison it was necessary to set the optimal parameter values for each SFA. The most important finding was that all the errors fall within a range from 3.8 deg to 7.1 deg thus making it impossible to draw any conclusions about the best performing SFA since no statistically significant differences were found. In addition, the orientation accuracy was heavily influenced by the experimental variables. After that, a novel method was designed to estimate the suboptimal parameter values of a given SFA without relying on any orientation reference. The maximum difference between the errors obtained using optimal and suboptimal parameter values amounted to 3.7 deg and to 0.6 deg on average. The last contribution consisted in the design of an unconstrained and a constrained methods for estimating the joint kinematics without considering the magnetometer to avoid the ferromagnetic disturbances. The unconstrained method was employed in a telerehabilitation platform in which the joint angles were estimated in real time. Errors collected during the execution of a full-body protocol were lower than 5 deg (considered the acceptability threshold). However, this method may be inaccurate after few minutes since no solutions can be taken to mitigate the drift error. To overcome this limitation a constrained method was developed based on a robotic model of the upper limb to set appropriate constraints. Errors relative to a continuous robot motion for twenty minutes were lower than 3 deg at most suggesting the feasibility of employing these solutions in the rehabilitation programs to properly plan the treatment and to accurately evaluate the outcomes

    Error Characterization of Vision-Aided Navigation Systems

    The goal of this work is to characterize the errors committed by an Image Aided Navigation (IAN) algorithm that has been developed for use as a navigation tool in GPS denied areas. The filter under study was developed by the Air Force Institute of Technology\u27s Advanced Navigation Technology center, and has been the focus of numerous research efforts. Unfortunately, these studies have all been based on single runs or simulations, and such results may not be indicative of the true filter performance. This problem extends to IAN publications in general; no analysis of IAN based upon a sizable real world data collection appears in the literature. This issue is addressed by applying Monte Carlo analysis methods to a 100 run data set collected using a joystick controlled robot outfitted with an inertial unit and stereo cameras. The averaged error magnitudes are found to be within 1 m RMSE. In addition, optimism in the filter computed covariance is verified. Finally, two instances of filter divergence are explored, with the causes being traced to feature matching errors. The results of this work will support future research efforts by providing a baseline measure of filter performance against which prospective enhancements may be compared

    Contributions to Positioning Methods on Low-Cost Devices

    Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers are common in modern consumer devices that make use of position information, e.g., smartphones and personal navigation assistants. With a GNSS receiver, a position solution with an accuracy in the order of five meters is usually available if the reception conditions are benign, but the performance degrades rapidly in less favorable environments and, on the other hand, a better accuracy would be beneficial in some applications. This thesis studies advanced methods for processing the measurements of low-cost devices that can be used for improving the positioning performance. The focus is on GNSS receivers and microelectromechanical (MEMS) inertial sensors which have become common in mobile devices such as smartphones. First, methods to compensate for the additive bias of a MEMS gyroscope are investigated. Both physical slewing of the sensor and mathematical modeling of the bias instability process are considered. The use of MEMS inertial sensors for pedestrian navigation indoors is studied in the context of map matching using a particle filter. A high-sensitivity GNSS receiver is used to produce coarse initialization information for the filter to decrease the computational burden without the need to exploit local building infrastructure. Finally, a cycle slip detection scheme for stand-alone single-frequency GNSS receivers is proposed. Experimental results show that even a MEMS gyroscope can reach an accuracy suitable for North seeking if the measurement errors are carefully modeled and eliminated. Furthermore, it is seen that even a relatively coarse initialization can be adequate for long-term indoor navigation without an excessive computational burden if a detailed map is available. The cycle slip detection results suggest that even small cycle slips can be detected with mass-market GNSS receivers, but the detection rate needs to be improved

In this thesis, a navigation system is designed, developed, and tested. Several alternatives are discussed, but the ultimate design is a loosely-coupled Extended Kalman Filter using rigid body dynamics as the process with a small angle linearization of quaternions. Simulations are run using real flight data. A bench top hardware prototype is tested. Results show good performance and give a variety of insights into the design of navigation systems.     Optimized Filter Design for Non-Differential GPS/IMU Integrated Navigation

    The endeavours in improving the performance of a conventional non-differential GPS/MEMS IMU tightly-coupled navigation system through filter design, involving nonlinear filtering methods, inertial sensors' stochastic error modelling and the carrier phase implementation, are described and introduced in this thesis. The main work is summarised as follows. Firstly, the performance evaluation of a recently developed nonlinear filtering method, the Cubature Kalman filter (CKF), is analysed based on the Taylor expansion. The theoretical analysis indicates that the nonlinear filtering method CKF shows its benefits only when implemented in a nonlinear system. Accordingly, a nonlinear attitude expression with direction cosine matrix (DCM) is introduced to tightly-coupled navigation system in order to describe the misalignment between the true and the estimated navigation frames. The simulation and experiment results show that the CKF performs better than the extended Kalman filter (EKF) in the unobservable, large misalignment and GPS outage cases when attitude errors accumulate quickly, rendering the psi-angle expression invalid and subsequently showing certain nonlinearity. Secondly, the use of shaping filter theory to model the inertial sensors' stochastic errors in a navigation Kalman filter is also introduced. The coefficients of the inertial sensors' noises are determined from the Allan variance plot. The shaping filter transfer function is deduced from the power spectral density (PSD) of the noises for both stationary and non-stationary processes. All the coloured noises are modelled together in the navigation Kalman filter according to equivalence theory. The coasting performance shows that the shaping filter based modelling method has a similar and even smaller maximum position drift than the conventional 1st-order Markovian process modelling method during GPS outages, thus indicating its effectiveness. Thirdly, according to the methods of dealing with carrier phase ambiguities, tightly-coupled navigation systems with time differenced carrier phase (TDCP) and total carrier phase (TCP) as Kalman filter measurements are deduced. The simulation and experiment results show that the TDCP can improve the velocity estimation accuracy and smooth trajectories, but position accuracy can only achieve the single point positioning (SPP) level if the TDCP is augmented with the pseudo-range, while the TCP based method's position accuracy can reach the sub-meter level. In order to further improve the position accuracy of the TDCP based method, a particle filter (PF) with modified TDCP observation is implemented in the TDCP/IMU tightly-coupled navigation system. The modified TDCP is defined as the carrier phase difference between the reference and observation epochs. The absolute position accuracy is determined by the reference position accuracy. If the reference position is taken from DGPS, the absolute position accuracy can reach the sub-meter level. For TCP/IMU tightly-coupled navigation systems, because the implementation of TCP in the navigation Kalman filter introduces additional states to the state vector, a hybrid CKF+EKF filtering method with the CKF estimating nonlinear states and the EKF estimating linear states, is proposed to maintain the CKF's benefits while reducing the computational load. The navigation results indicate the effectiveness of the method. After applying the improvements, the performance of a non-differential GPS/MEMS IMU tightly-coupled navigation system can be greatly improved
