    Soft computing for hazardous waste routing in Malaysia: a review

    Nowadays, a significant number of researchers are focusing on utilizing soft computing approaches to address the issue of scheduling in applications concerned with hazardous waste management. In Malaysia, there is thoughtless awareness of the management of hazardous waste, even though the production of wastes in hazardous domains at the industrial and domestic levels has been rising lately. According to previous research findings, the location routing problem (LRP) can be designated as one of the models closer to the actual situation, evaluating the most suitable and optimal location for establishing facilities and utilizing transportation for pick-up and distribution. Recent studies have focused on enhancing the LRP model, and its methodologies approach to solve the waste management problem in hazardous domains. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the better promising and practicable mathematical model of LRP and its methodology approach is discussed, as well as an analysis of the publishing pattern and the trend of research over the preceding five years and more, as retrieved from the web of science (WoS) database. In conclusion, this research is significant in ensuring the effectiveness of reliable mathematical model development and suitable methodologies in the future for solving hazardous waste management problems

    Facility Location Problems: Models, Techniques, and Applications in Waste Management

    This paper presents a brief description of some existing models of facility location problems (FLPs) in solid waste management. The study provides salient information on commonly used distance functions in location models along with their corresponding mathematical formulation. Some of the optimization techniques that have been applied to location problems are also presented along with an appropriate pseudocode algorithm for their implementation. Concerning the models and solution techniques, the survey concludes by summarizing some recent studies on the applications of FLPs to waste collection and disposal. It is expected that this paper will contribute in no small measure to an integrated solid waste management system with specific emphasis on issues associated with waste collection, thereby boosting the drive for e�ective and e�cient waste collection systems. The content will also provide early career researchers with some necessary starting information required to formulate and solve problems relating to FLP

    Sustainable waste solutions: Optimizing location-allocation of 3R waste management sites in Gondokusuman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia through multi-maximal covering location approach

    Developing a Multi-Maximal Covering Location Model (MMCLM) for waste management in Gondokusuman Sub-district, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is urgently needed. The closure of the Piyungan landfill has resulted in the need for additional Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Waste Management Sites (3R-WMSs) to reduce waste that the landfill cannot accommodate. The primary objective of this model is to optimize the location and allocation of demand volume nodes, representing the resident population, to a specific set of 3R-WMS. These demand nodes are located at different distances from 3R-WMSs, including high and low coverage areas. The research in the Gondokusuman Sub-district employed MMCLM with facility capacity constraints and was developed using mixed integer linear programming methodology. The study identified five optimal locations for a 3R-WMS establishment that comprehensively cover all demand nodes (15301) and population clusters (45903) in the sub-district, including both high (5085) and low coverage areas (10216). This research represents a significant step forward in developing a sustainable environment by ensuring easy access to reducing, reusing, and recycling-based waste management facilities for residents

    An improved multi-objective programming with augmented ε-constraint method for hazardous waste location-routing problem

In this paper, an improved mathematical formulation is developed based upon a multi-objective mixed integer programming approach. The model aims at assisting decision makers in selecting locations for different facilities including treatment plants, recycling plants and disposal sites, providing appropriate technologies for hazardous waste treatment, and routing transportation. In the model, two critical factors are taken into account: system operating costs and risk imposed on local residents, and a compensation factor is introduced to the risk objective function in order to account for the fact that the risk level imposed by one type of hazardous waste or treatment technology may significantly vary from that of other types. Besides, the policy instruments for promoting waste recycling are considered, and their influence on the costs and risk of hazardous waste management is also discussed. The model is coded and calculated in Lingo optimization solver, and the augmented ε-constraint method is employed to generate the Pareto optimal curve of the multi-objective optimization problem. The trade-off between different objectives is illustrated in the numerical experiment

    Sustainability assessment of biomass-based energy supply chain using multi-objective optimization model

    In recent years, population growth and lifestyle changes have led to an increase in energy consumption worldwide. Providing energy from fossil fuels has negative consequences, such as energy supply constraints and overall greenhouse gas emissions. As the world continues to evolve, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and finding alternative energy sources becomes increasingly urgent. Renewable energy sources are the best way for all countries to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while reducing pollution. Biomass as a renewable energy source is an alternative energy source that can meet energy needs and contribute to global warming and climate change reduction. Among the many renewable energy options, biomass energy has found a wide range of application areas due to its resource diversity and easy availability from various sources all year round. The supply assurance of such energy sources is based on a sustainable and effective supply chain. Simultaneous improvement of the biomass-based supply chain's economic, environmental and social performance is a key factor for optimum network design. This study has suggested a multi-objective goal programming (MOGP) model to optimize a multi-stage biomass-based sustainable renewable energy supply chain network design. The proposed MOGP model represents decisions regarding the optimal number, locations, size of processing facilities and warehouses, and amounts of biomass and final products transported between the locations. The proposed model has been applied to a real-world case study in Istanbul. In addition, sensitivity analysis has been conducted to analyze the effects of biomass availability, processing capacity, storage capacity, electricity generation capacity, and the weight of the goals on the solutions. To realize sensitivity analysis related to the importance of goals, for the first time in the literature, this study employed a spherical fuzzy set-based analytic hierarchy method to determine the weights of goals

    An Allocation-Routing Optimization Model for Integrated Solid Waste Management

    Integrated smart waste management (ISWM) is an innovative and technologically advanced approach to managing and collecting waste. It is based on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, a network of interconnected devices that communicate and exchange data. The data collected from IoT devices helps municipalities to optimize their waste management operations. They can use the information to schedule waste collections more efficiently and plan their routes accordingly. In this study, we consider an ISWM framework for the collection, recycling, and recovery steps to improve the performance of the waste system. Since ISWM typically involves the collaboration of various stakeholders and is affected by different sources of uncertainty, a novel multi-objective model is proposed to maximize the probabilistic profit of the network while minimizing the total travel time and transportation costs. In the proposed model, the chance-constrained programming approach is applied to deal with the profit uncertainty gained from waste recycling and recovery activities. Furthermore, some of the most proficient multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithms are applied to address the complexity of the problem. For optimal adjustment of parameter values, the Taguchi parameter design method is utilized to improve the performance of the proposed optimization algorithm. Finally, the most reliable algorithm is determined based on the Best Worst Method (BWM)

    Reverse Logistics Network Design with a 3-Phase Interactive Intuitionistic Fuzzy Goal Programming Approach: A Case Study of Covid-19 in Pathum Thani, Thailand

    During outbreaks, a vast quantity of Infected Medical Waste (IMW) can be substantially generated in a short period, which poses a massive risk to medical personnel and surrounding communities. This study proposes an Intuitionistic Fuzzy Multi-Objective Multi-Period Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (IFMOMILP) model for effective IMW management in outbreaks under uncertainty, considering financial and risk factors subject to a priority from Decision Makers (DMs). The primary emphasis is on determining the optimal locations and capacity levels for temporary facilities, including temporary storage and treatment centers, as well as the optimal transportation routes. A 3-phase interactive Intuitionistic Fuzzy Goal Programming (i-IFGP) approach is developed to solve this IFMOMILP model. First, the Jiménez approach is applied to handle the uncertainties. Then, the problem is solved by Intuitionistic Fuzzy Goal Programming (IFGP). An actual case study of the COVID-19 outbreak in Pathum Thani province in Thailand was carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The proposed approach yields solutions with varying feasibility degrees and scaling factors, providing alternatives for DMs. Then, the score function is utilized to imply DMs’ satisfaction with the outcomes, which is a concrete measure since it can reflect the intention of the DMs

    A new management scheme to support reverse logistics processes in the agrifood distribution sector

    During the last decades, reverse logistics and reuse of products have received growing attention as profitable and sustainable business strategies. Looking at the agrifood distribution sector, every day thousands of agrifood stores throw away large quantities of food product no longer suitable for sale. This "waste product", in the majority of cases, could still find new uses as animal feed or fertilizer. The return flow of food product is a typical problem of reverse logistics. This study proposes a new bi-modular scheme for managing the process of collection of "food waste" resulting from the agribusiness distribution sector and its subsequent distribution to livestock farms and collection centers located in the area of interest. The proposed management scheme consists of two modules: - module 1: to cluster the observed area into convenient collection sectors by means of clustering algorithms; - module 2: to identify optimal retrieval routes within each cluster by using Vehicle Routing models. The province of Cagliari in Sardinia (Italy) has been identified as test area. An extensive data collection process has been performed in order to collect the information necessary to portray the existing scenario. The following businesses have been recorded: grocery stores and supermarkets with at least 400 sqm of retail area, livestock farms with at least 200 heads of cattle, feed mills. A number of variables concerning location, type, size and demand data have been collected for each recorded unit.The management scheme has been implemented in a software platform and successfully applied in the test area. The outcome provides useful insights to stakeholders and suggests avenues for further research in the area in order to develop a more general and intuitive tool for managing reverse logistics processes in agrifood chains

    Design of Closed Loop Supply Chains

    Increased concern for the environment has lead to new techniques to design products and supply chains that are both economically and ecologically feasible. This paper deals with the product - and corresponding supply chain design for a refrigerator. Literature study shows that there are many models to support product design and logistics separately, but not in an integrated way. In our research we develop quantitative modelling to support an optimal design structure of a product, i.e. modularity, repairability, recyclability, as well as the optimal locations and goods flows allocation in the logistics system. Environmental impacts are measured by energy and waste. Economic costs are modelled as linear functions of volumes with a fixed set-up component for facilities. We apply this model using real life R&D data of a Japanese consumer electronics company. The model is run for different scenarios using different parameter settings such as centralised versus decentralised logistics, alternative product designs, varying return quality and quantity, and potential environmental legislation based on producer responsibility.supply chain management;reverse logistics;facility location;network design;product design
