    Multi-objective evolutionary–fuzzy augmented flight control for an F16 aircraft

    In this article, the multi-objective design of a fuzzy logic augmented flight controller for a high performance fighter jet (the Lockheed-Martin F16) is described. A fuzzy logic controller is designed and its membership functions tuned by genetic algorithms in order to design a roll, pitch, and yaw flight controller with enhanced manoeuverability which still retains safety critical operation when combined with a standard inner-loop stabilizing controller. The controller is assessed in terms of pilot effort and thus reduction of pilot fatigue. The controller is incorporated into a six degree of freedom motion base real-time flight simulator, and flight tested by a qualified pilot instructor

    An artificial immune systems based predictive modelling approach for the multi-objective elicitation of Mamdani fuzzy rules: a special application to modelling alloys

    In this paper, a systematic multi-objective Mamdani fuzzy modeling approach is proposed, which can be viewed as an extended version of the previously proposed Singleton fuzzy modeling paradigm. A set of new back-error propagation (BEP) updating formulas are derived so that they can replace the old set developed in the singleton version. With the substitution, the extension to the multi-objective Mamdani Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems (FRBS) is almost endemic. Due to the carefully chosen output membership functions, the inference and the defuzzification methods, a closed form integral can be deducted for the defuzzification method, which ensures the efficiency of the developed Mamdani FRBS. Some important factors, such as the variable length coding scheme and the rule alignment, are also discussed. Experimental results for a real data set from the steel industry suggest that the proposed approach is capable of eliciting not only accurate but also transparent FRBS with good generalization ability

    This document describes the progress and plans of the Artificial Intelligence Research Branch (RIA) at ARC in 1990. Activities span a range from basic scientific research to engineering development and to fielded NASA applications, particularly those applications that are enabled by basic research carried out at RIA. Work is conducted in-house and through collaborative partners in academia and industry. Our major focus is on a limited number of research themes with a dual commitment to technical excellence and proven applicability to NASA short, medium, and long-term problems. RIA acts as the Agency's lead organization for research aspects of artificial intelligence, working closely with a second research laboratory at JPL and AI applications groups at all NASA centers

    Fuzzy-logic-based control, filtering, and fault detection for networked systems: A Survey

    This paper is concerned with the overview of the recent progress in fuzzy-logic-based filtering, control, and fault detection problems. First, the network technologies are introduced, the networked control systems are categorized from the aspects of fieldbuses and industrial Ethernets, the necessity of utilizing the fuzzy logic is justified, and the network-induced phenomena are discussed. Then, the fuzzy logic control strategies are reviewed in great detail. Special attention is given to the thorough examination on the latest results for fuzzy PID control, fuzzy adaptive control, and fuzzy tracking control problems. Furthermore, recent advances on the fuzzy-logic-based filtering and fault detection problems are reviewed.     Optimization of force-limiting seismic devices connecting structural subsystems

    This paper is focused on the optimum design of an original force-limiting floor anchorage system for the seismic protection of reinforced concrete (RC) dual wall-frame buildings. This protection strategy is based on the interposition of elasto-plastic links between two structural subsystems, namely the lateral force resisting system (LFRS) and the gravity load resisting system (GLRS). The most efficient configuration accounting for the optimal position and mechanical characteristics of the nonlinear devices is obtained numerically by means of a modified constrained differential evolution algorithm. A 12-storey prototype RC dual wall-frame building is considered to demonstrate the effectiveness of the seismic protection strategy

    A probabilistic multi-objective approach for FACTS devices allocation with different levels of wind penetration under uncertainties and load correlation

    This study presents a probabilistic multi-objective optimization approach to obtain the optimal locations and sizes of static var compensator (SVC) and thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) in a power transmission network with large level of wind generation. In this study, the uncertainties of the wind power generation and correlated load demand are considered. The uncertainties are modeled in this work using the points estimation method (PEM). The optimization problem is solved using the Multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm to find the best position and rating of the flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices. The objective of the problem is to maximize the system loadability while minimizing the power losses and FACTS devices installation cost. Additionally, a technique based on fuzzy decision-making approach is employed to extract one of the Pareto optimal solutions as the best compromise one. The proposed approach is applied on the modified IEEE 30-bus system. The numerical results evince the effectiveness of the proposed approach and shows the economic benefits that can be achieved when considering the FACTS controller

    Full Envelope Control of Nonlinear Plants with Parameter Uncertainty by Fuzzy Controller Scheduling

    A full envelope controller synthesis technique is developed for multiple-input single-output (MISO) nonlinear systems with structured parameter uncertainty. The technique maximizes the controller\u27s valid region of operation, while guaranteeing pre-specified transient performance. The resulting controller does not require on-line adaptation, estimation, prediction or model identification. Fuzzy Logic (FL) is used to smoothly schedule independently designed point controllers over the operational envelope and parameter space of the system\u27s model. These point controllers are synthesized using techniques chosen by the designer, thus allowing an unprecedented amount of design freedom. By using established control theory for the point controllers, the resulting nonlinear dynamic controller is able to handle the dynamics of complex systems which can not otherwise be addressed by Fuzzy Logic Control. An analytical solution for parameters describing the membership functions allows the optimization to yield the location of point designs: both quantifying the controller\u27s coverage, and eliminating the need of extensive hand tuning of these parameters. The net result is a decrease in the number of point designs required. Geometric primitives used in the solution all have multi-dimensional interpretations (convex hull, ellipsoid, Voronoi-Delaunay diagrams) which allow for scheduling on n-dimensions, including uncertainty due to nonlinearities and parameter variation. Since many multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) controller design techniques are accomplished by solving several MISO problems, this work bridges the gap to full envelope control of MIMO nonlinear systems with parameter variation

    Towards data-driven and data-based control of wave energy systems: Classification, overview, and critical assessment

    Currently, a significant effort in the world research panorama is focused on finding efficient solutions to a carbon-free energy supply, wave energy being one of the most promising sources of untapped renewable energy. However, wave energy is not currently economic, though control technology has been shown to significantly increase the energy capture capabilities. Usually, the synthesis of a wave energy control strategy requires the adoption of control-oriented models, which are prone to error, particularly arising from unmodelled hydrodynamics, given the complexity of the hydrodynamic interactions between the device and the ocean. In this context, data-driven and data-based control strategies provide a potential solution to some of these issues, using real-time data to gather information about the system dynamics and performance. Thus motivated, this study provides a detailed analysis of different approaches to the exploitation of data in the design of control philosophies for wave energy systems, establishing clear definitions of data-driven and data-based control in this field, together with a classification highlighting the various roles of data in the control synthesis process. In particular, we investigate intrinsic opportunities and limitations behind the use of data in the process of control synthesis, providing a comprehensive review together with critical considerations aimed at directly contributing towards the development of efficient data-driven and data-based control systems for wave energy devices

    Evolutionary multi-objective optimisation with preferences for multivariable PI controller tuning

    Multi-objective optimisation design procedures have shown to be a valuable tool for control engineers. They enable the designer having a close embedment of the tuning process for a wide variety of applica- tions. In such procedures, evolutionary multi-objective optimisation has been extensively used for PI and PID controller tuning; one reason for this is due to their flexibility to include mechanisms in order to en- hance convergence and diversity. Although its usability, when dealing with multi-variable processes, the resulting Pareto front approximation might not be useful, due to the number of design objectives stated. That is, a vast region of the objective space might be impractical or useless a priori, due to the strong degradation in some of the design objectives. In this paper preference handling techniques are incorpo- rated into the optimisation process, seeking to improve the pertinency of the approximated Pareto front for multi-variable PI controller tuning. That is, the inclusion of preferences into the optimisation process, in order to seek actively for a pertinent Pareto front approximation. With such approach, it is possible to tune a multi-variable PI controller, fulfilling several design objectives, using previous knowledge from the designer on the expected trade-off performance. This is validated with a well-known benchmark exam- ple in multi-variable control.
