    Analysis of Single Board Architectures Integrating Sensors Technologies

    Development boards, Single-Board Computers (SBCs) and Single-Board Microcontrollers (SBMs) integrating sensors and communication technologies have become a very popular and interesting solution in the last decade. They are of interest for their simplicity, versatility, adaptability, ease of use and prototyping, which allow them to serve as a starting point for projects and as reference for all kinds of designs. In this sense, there are innumerable applications integrating sensors and communication technologies where they are increasingly used, including robotics, domotics, testing and measurement, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects, Internet of Things (IoT) devices in the home or workplace and science, technology, engineering, educational and also academic world for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills. The interest in single-board architectures and their applications have caused that all electronics manufacturers currently develop low-cost single board platform solutions. In this paper we realized an analysis of the most important topics related with single-board architectures integrating sensors. We analyze the most popular platforms based on characteristics as: cost, processing capacity, integrated processing technology and opensource license, as well as power consumption (mA@V), reliability (%), programming flexibility, support availability and electronics utilities.     An Adaptive Vehicle Clustering Algorithm Based on Power Minimization in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks

    In this paper, we propose an adaptive vehicle clustering algorithm based on fuzzy C-means algorithm, which aims at minimizing power consumption of the vehicles. Specifically, the proposed algorithm firstly dynamically allocates the computing resources of each virtual machine in the vehicle, according to the popularity of different virtualized network functions. The optimal clustering number to minimize the total energy consumption of vehicles is determined using the fuzzy C-means algorithm and the clustering head is selected based on vehicles moving direction, weighted mobility, and entropy. Simulation results are provided to confirm that the proposed algorithm can decrease the power consumption of vehicles while satisfying the vehicle delay requirement

    Energy-efficient resource allocation in limited fronthaul capacity cloud-radio access networks

    In recent years, cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) have demonstrated their role as a formidable technology candidate to address the challenging issues from the advent of Fifth Generation (5G) mobile networks. In C-RANs, the modules which are capable of processing data and handling radio signals are physically separated in two main functional groups: the baseband unit (BBU) pool consisting of multiple BBUs on the cloud, and the radio access networks (RANs) consisting of several low-power remote radio heads (RRH) whose functionality are simplified with radio transmission/reception. Thanks to the centralized computation capability of cloud computing, C-RANs enable the coordination between RRHs to significantly improve the achievable spectral efficiency to satisfy the explosive traffic demand from users. More importantly, this enhanced performance can be attained at its power-saving mode, which results in the energy-efficient C-RAN perspective. Note that such improvement can be achieved under an ideal fronthaul condition of very high and stable capacity. However, in practice, dedicated fronthaul links must remarkably be divided to connect a large amount of RRHs to the cloud, leading to a scenario of non-ideal limited fronthaul capacity for each RRH. This imposes a certain upper-bound on each user’s spectral efficiency, which limits the promising achievement of C-RANs. To fully harness the energy-efficient C-RANs while respecting their stringent limited fronthaul capacity characteristics, a more appropriate and efficient network design is essential. The main scope of this thesis aims at optimizing the green performance of C-RANs in terms of energy-efficiency under the non-ideal fronthaul capacity condition, namely energy-efficient design in limited fronthaul capacity C-RANs. Our study, via jointly determining the transmit beamforming, RRH selection, and RRH–user association, targets the following three vital design issues: the optimal trade-off between maximizing achievable sum rate and minimizing total power consumption, the maximum energy-efficiency under adaptive rate-dependent power model, the optimal joint energy-efficient design of virtual computing along with the radio resource allocation in virtualized C-RANs. The significant contributions and novelties of this work can be elaborated in the followings. Firstly, the joint design of transmit beamforming, RRH selection, and RRH–user association to optimize the trade-off between user sum rate maximization and total power consumption minimization in the downlink transmissions of C-RANs is presented in Chapter 3. We develop one powerful with high-complexity and two novel efficient low-complexity algorithms to respectively solve for a global optimal and high-quality sub-optimal solutions. The findings in this chapter show that the proposed algorithms, besides overcoming the burden to solve difficult non-convex problems within a polynomial time, also outperform the techniques in the literature in terms of convergence and achieved network performance. Secondly, Chapter 4 proposes a novel model reflecting the dependence of consumed power on the user data rate and highlights its impact through various energy-efficiency metrics in CRANs. The dominant performance of the results form Chapter 4, compared to the conventional work without adaptive rate-dependent power model, corroborates the importance of the newly proposed model in appropriately conserving the system power to achieve the most energy efficient C-RAN performance. Finally, we propose a novel model on the cloud center which enables the virtualization and adaptive allocation of computing resources according to the data traffic demand to conserve more power in Chapter 5. A problem of jointly designing the virtual computing resource together with the beamforming, RRH selection, and RRH–user association which maximizes the virtualized C-RAN energy-efficiency is considered. To cope with the huge size of the formulated optimization problem, a novel efficient with much lower-complexity algorithm compared to previous work is developed to achieve the solution. The achieved results from different evaluations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed designs compared to the conventional work

    A Comprehensive Survey of the Tactile Internet: State of the art and Research Directions

    The Internet has made several giant leaps over the years, from a fixed to a mobile Internet, then to the Internet of Things, and now to a Tactile Internet. The Tactile Internet goes far beyond data, audio and video delivery over fixed and mobile networks, and even beyond allowing communication and collaboration among things. It is expected to enable haptic communication and allow skill set delivery over networks. Some examples of potential applications are tele-surgery, vehicle fleets, augmented reality and industrial process automation. Several papers already cover many of the Tactile Internet-related concepts and technologies, such as haptic codecs, applications, and supporting technologies. However, none of them offers a comprehensive survey of the Tactile Internet, including its architectures and algorithms. Furthermore, none of them provides a systematic and critical review of the existing solutions. To address these lacunae, we provide a comprehensive survey of the architectures and algorithms proposed to date for the Tactile Internet. In addition, we critically review them using a well-defined set of requirements and discuss some of the lessons learned as well as the most promising research directions

    Spectral, Energy and Computation Efficiency in Future 5G Wireless Networks

    Wireless technology has revolutionized the way people communicate. From first generation, or 1G, in the 1980s to current, largely deployed 4G in the 2010s, we have witnessed not only a technological leap, but also the reformation of associated applications. It is expected that 5G will become commercially available in 2020. 5G is driven by ever-increasing demands for high mobile traffic, low transmission delay, and massive numbers of connected devices. Today, with the popularity of smart phones, intelligent appliances, autonomous cars, and tablets, communication demands are higher than ever, especially when it comes to low-cost and easy-access solutions. Existing communication architecture cannot fulfill 5G’s needs. For example, 5G requires connection speeds up to 1,000 times faster than current technology can provide. Also, from transmitter side to receiver side, 5G delays should be less than 1ms, while 4G targets a 5ms delay speed. To meet these requirements, 5G will apply several disruptive techniques. We focus on two of them: new radio and new scheme. As for the former, we study the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and as for the latter, we use mobile edge computing (MEC). Traditional communication systems allow users to communicate alternatively, which clearly avoids inter-user interference, but also caps the connection speed. NOMA, on the other hand, allows multiple users to transmit simultaneously. While NOMA will inevitably cause excessive interference, we prove such interference can be mitigated by an advanced receiver side technique. NOMA has existed on the research frontier since 2013. Since that time, both academics and industry professionals have extensively studied its performance. In this dissertation, our contribution is to incorporate NOMA with several potential schemes, such as relay, IoT, and cognitive radio networks. Furthermore, we reviewed various limitations on NOMA and proposed a more practical model. In the second part, MEC is considered. MEC is a transformation from the previous cloud computing system. In particular, MEC leverages powerful devices nearby and instead of sending information to distant cloud servers, the transmission occurs in closer range, which can effectively reduce communication delay. In this work, we have proposed a new evaluation metric for MEC which can more effectively leverage the trade-off between the amount of computation and the energy consumed thereby. A practical communication system for wearable devices is proposed in the last part, which combines all the techniques discussed above. The challenges for wearable communication are inherent in its diverse needs, as some devices may require low speed but high reliability (factory sensors), while others may need low delay (medical devices). We have addressed these challenges and validated our findings through simulations

    CROSS-STACK PREDICTIVE CONTROL FRAMEWORK FOR MULTICORE REAL-TIME APPLICATIONS

    Many of the next generation applications in entertainment, human computer interaction, infrastructure, security and medical systems are computationally intensive, always-on, and have soft real time (SRT) requirements. While failure to meet deadlines is not catastrophic in SRT systems, missing deadlines can result in an unacceptable degradation in the quality of service (QoS). To ensure acceptable QoS under dynamically changing operating conditions such as changes in the workload, energy availability, and thermal constraints, systems are typically designed for worst case conditions. Unfortunately, such over-designing of systems increases costs and overall power consumption. In this dissertation we formulate the real-time task execution as a Multiple-Input, Single- Output (MISO) optimal control problem involving tracking a desired system utilization set point with control inputs derived from across the computing stack. We assume that an arbitrary number of SRT tasks may join and leave the system at arbitrary times. The tasks are scheduled on multiple cores by a dynamic priority multiprocessor scheduling algorithm. We use a model predictive controller (MPC) to realize optimal control. MPCs are easy to tune, can handle multiple control variables, and constraints on both the dependent and independent variables. We experimentally demonstrate the operation of our controller on a video encoder application and a computer vision application executing on a dual socket quadcore Xeon processor with a total of 8 processing cores. We establish that the use of DVFS and application quality as control variables enables operation at a lower power op- erating point while meeting real-time constraints as compared to non cross-stack control approaches. We also evaluate the role of scheduling algorithms in the control of homo- geneous and heterogeneous workloads. Additionally, we propose a novel adaptive control technique for time-varying workloads

    A Survey on Security and Privacy of 5G Technologies: Potential Solutions, Recent Advancements, and Future Directions

    Security has become the primary concern in many telecommunications industries today as risks can have high consequences. Especially, as the core and enable technologies will be associated with 5G network, the confidential information will move at all layers in future wireless systems. Several incidents revealed that the hazard encountered by an infected wireless network, not only affects the security and privacy concerns, but also impedes the complex dynamics of the communications ecosystem. Consequently, the complexity and strength of security attacks have increased in the recent past making the detection or prevention of sabotage a global challenge. From the security and privacy perspectives, this paper presents a comprehensive detail on the core and enabling technologies, which are used to build the 5G security model; network softwarization security, PHY (Physical) layer security and 5G privacy concerns, among others. Additionally, the paper includes discussion on security monitoring and management of 5G networks. This paper also evaluates the related security measures and standards of core 5G technologies by resorting to different standardization bodies and provide a brief overview of 5G standardization security forces. Furthermore, the key projects of international significance, in line with the security concerns of 5G and beyond are also presented.
