    Integrality and cutting planes in semidefinite programming approaches for combinatorial optimization

    Many real-life decision problems are discrete in nature. To solve such problems as mathematical optimization problems, integrality constraints are commonly incorporated in the model to reflect the choice of finitely many alternatives. At the same time, it is known that semidefinite programming is very suitable for obtaining strong relaxations of combinatorial optimization problems. In this dissertation, we study the interplay between semidefinite programming and integrality, where a special focus is put on the use of cutting-plane methods. Although the notions of integrality and cutting planes are well-studied in linear programming, integer semidefinite programs (ISDPs) are considered only recently. We show that manycombinatorial optimization problems can be modeled as ISDPs. Several theoretical concepts, such as the Chvátal-Gomory closure, total dual integrality and integer Lagrangian duality, are studied for the case of integer semidefinite programming. On the practical side, we introduce an improved branch-and-cut approach for ISDPs and a cutting-plane augmented Lagrangian method for solving semidefinite programs with a large number of cutting planes. Throughout the thesis, we apply our results to a wide range of combinatorial optimization problems, among which the quadratic cycle cover problem, the quadratic traveling salesman problem and the graph partition problem. Our approaches lead to novel, strong and efficient solution strategies for these problems, with the potential to be extended to other problem classes

    Optimization-based control and planning for highly dynamic legged locomotion in complex environments

    Legged animals can dynamically traverse unstructured environments in an elegant and efficient manner, whether it be running down a steep hill or leaping between branches. To harness part of the animal agility to the legged robot would unlock potential applications such as disaster response and planetary exploration. The unique challenge of these tasks is that the robot has to produce highly dynamic maneuvers in complex environments with minimum human guidance. This thesis explores how an optimization-based method can be applied in the control and planning of highly dynamic legged motions to address the locomotion problem in complex environments. Specifically, this work first describes the design synthesis of a small and agile quadrupedal robot \panther. Based on the quadruped platform, we developed a model predictive control (MPC) control framework to realize complex 3D acrobatic motions without resorting to switching among controllers. We present the MPC formulation that directly uses the rotation matrix, which avoids the singularity issue associated with Euler angles. Motion planning algorithms are developed for planar-legged robot traversing challenging terrains. Dynamic trajectories that simultaneously reason about contact, centroidal dynamics, and joint torque limit are obtained by solving mixed-integer convex programs (MICP) without requiring any initial guess from the operator. We further reduce the computational expense of long-horizon planning by leveraging the benefits of both optimization and sampling-based approaches for a simple legged robot. Finally, we present experimental results for each topic on legged robot hardware to validate the proposed method. It is our hope that the results presented in this thesis will eventually enable legged robots to achieve mobility autonomy at the level of biological systems

    This dissertation discusses various aspects of strategic trading using both analytical modeling and numerical methods. Strategic trading, in short, encompasses models of trading, most notably models of optimal execution and portfolio selection, in which one seeks to rigorously consider various---both explicit and implicit---costs stemming from the act of trading itself. The strategic trading approach, rooted in the market microstructure literature, contrasts with many classical finance models in which markets are assumed to be frictionless and traders can, for the most part, take prices as given. Introducing trading costs to dynamic models of financial markets tend to complicate matters. First, the objectives of the traders become more nuanced since now overtrading leads to poor outcomes due to increased trading costs. Second, when trades affect prices and there are multiple traders in the market, the traders start to behave in a more calculated fashion, taking into account both their own objectives and the perceived actions of others. Acknowledging this strategic behavior is especially important when the traders are asymmetrically informed. These new features allow the models discussed to better reflect aspects real-world trading, for instance, intraday trading patterns, and enable one to ask and answer new questions, for instance, related to the interactions between different traders. To efficiently analyze the models put forth, numerical methods must be utilized. This is, as is to be expected, the price one must pay from added complexity. However, it also opens an opportunity to have a closer look at the numerical approaches themselves. This opportunity is capitalized on and various new and novel computational procedures influenced by the growing field of numerical real algebraic geometry are introduced and employed. These procedures are utilizable beyond the scope of this dissertation and enable one to sharpen the analysis of dynamic equilibrium models.Tämä väitöskirja käsittelee strategista kaupankäyntiä hyödyntäen sekä analyyttisiä että numeerisia menetelmiä. Strategisen kaupankäynnin mallit, erityisesti optimaalinen kauppojen toteutus ja portfolion valinta, pyrkivät tarkasti huomioimaan kaupankäynnistä itsestään aiheutuvat eksplisiittiset ja implisiittiset kustannukset. Tämä erottaa strategisen kaupankäynnin mallit klassisista kitkattomista malleista. Kustannusten huomioiminen rahoitusmarkkinoiden dynaamisessa tarkastelussa monimutkaistaa malleja. Ensinnäkin kaupankävijöiden tavoitteet muuttuvat hienovaraisemmiksi, koska liian aktiivinen kaupankäynti johtaa korkeisiin kaupankäyntikuluihin ja heikkoon tuottoon. Toiseksi oletus siitä, että kaupankävijöiden valitsemat toimet vaikuttavat hintoihin, johtaa pelikäyttäytymiseen silloin, kun markkinoilla on useampia kaupankävijöitä. Pelikäyttäytymisen huomioiminen on ensiarvoisen tärkeää, mikäli informaatio kaupankävijöiden kesken on asymmetristä. Näiden piirteiden johdosta tässä väitöskirjassa käsitellyt mallit mahdollistavat abstrahoitujen rahoitusmarkkinoiden aiempaa täsmällisemmän tarkastelun esimerkiksi päivänsisäisen kaupankäynnin osalta. Tämän lisäksi mallien avulla voidaan löytää vastauksia uusiin kysymyksiin, kuten esimerkiksi siihen, millaisia ovat kaupankävijöiden keskinäiset vuorovaikutussuhteet dynaamisilla markkinoilla. Monimutkaisten mallien analysointiin hyödynnetään numeerisia menetelmiä. Tämä avaa mahdollisuuden näiden menetelmien yksityiskohtaisempaan tarkasteluun, ja tätä mahdollisuutta hyödynnetään pohtimalla laskennallisia ratkaisuja tuoreesta numeerista reaalista algebrallista geometriaa hyödyntävästä näkökulmasta.     Algebraic geometry in experimental design and related fields

    The thesis is essentially concerned with two subjects corresponding to the two grants under which the author was research assistant in the last three years. The one presented first, which cronologically comes second, addresses the issues of iden- tifiability for polynomial models via algebraic geometry and leads to a deeper understanding of the classical theory. For example the very recent introduction of the idea of the fan of an experimental design gives a maximal class of models identifiable with a given design. The second area develops a theory of optimum orthogonal fractions for Fourier regression models based on integer lattice designs. These provide alternatives to product designs. For particular classes of Fourier models with a given number of interactions the focus is on the study of orthogonal designs with attention given to complexity issues as the dimension of the model increases. Thus multivariate identifiability is the field of concern of the thesis. A major link between these two parts is given by Part III where the algebraic approach to identifiability is extended to Fourier models and lattice designs. The approach is algorithmic and algorithms to deal with the various issues are to be found throughout the thesis. Both the application of algebraic geometry and computer algebra in statistics and the analysis of orthogonal fractions for Fourier models are new and rapidly growing fields. See for example the work by Koval and Schwabe (1997) [42] on qualitative Fourier models, Shi and Fang (1995) [67] on ¿/-designs for Fourier regression and Dette and Haller (1997) [25] on one-dimensional incomplete Fourier models. For algebraic geometry in experimental design see Fontana, Pistone and Rogantin (1997) [31] on two-level orthogonal fractions, Caboara and Robbiano (1997) [15] on the inversion problem and Robbiano and Rogantin (1997) [61] on distracted fractions. The only previous extensive application of algebraic geometry in statistics is the work of Diaconis and Sturmfels (1993) [27] on sampling from conditional distributions
