    AI for social good: social media mining of migration discourse

    The number of international migrants has steadily increased over the years, and it has become one of the pressing issues in today’s globalized world. Our bibliometric review of around 400 articles on Scopus platform indicates an increased interest in migration-related research in recent times but the extant research is scattered at best. AI-based opinion mining research has predominantly noted negative sentiments across various social media platforms. Additionally, we note that prior studies have mostly considered social media data in the context of a particular event or a specific context. These studies offered a nuanced view of the societal opinions regarding that specific event, but this approach might miss the forest for the trees. Hence, this dissertation makes an attempt to go beyond simplistic opinion mining to identify various latent themes of migrant-related social media discourse. The first essay draws insights from the social psychology literature to investigate two facets of Twitter discourse, i.e., perceptions about migrants and behaviors toward migrants. We identified two prevailing perceptions (i.e., sympathy and antipathy) and two dominant behaviors (i.e., solidarity and animosity) of social media users toward migrants. Additionally, this essay has also fine-tuned the binary hate speech detection task, specifically in the context of migrants, by highlighting the granular differences between the perceptual and behavioral aspects of hate speech. The second essay investigates the journey of migrants or refugees from their home to the host country. We draw insights from Gennep's seminal book, i.e., Les Rites de Passage, to identify four phases of their journey: Arrival of Refugees, Temporal stay at Asylums, Rehabilitation, and Integration of Refugees into the host nation. We consider multimodal tweets for this essay. We find that our proposed theoretical framework was relevant for the 2022 Ukrainian refugee crisis – as a use-case. Our third essay points out that a limited sample of annotated data does not provide insights regarding the prevailing societal-level opinions. Hence, this essay employs unsupervised approaches on large-scale societal datasets to explore the prevailing societal-level sentiments on YouTube platform. Specifically, it probes whether negative comments about migrants get endorsed by other users. If yes, does it depend on who the migrants are – especially if they are cultural others? To address these questions, we consider two datasets: YouTube comments before the 2022 Ukrainian refugee crisis, and during the crisis. Second dataset confirms the Cultural Us hypothesis, and our findings are inconclusive for the first dataset. Our final or fourth essay probes social integration of migrants. The first part of this essay probed the unheard and faint voices of migrants to understand their struggle to settle down in the host economy. The second part of this chapter explored the viability of social media platforms as a viable alternative to expensive commercial job portals for vulnerable migrants. Finally, in our concluding chapter, we elucidated the potential of explainable AI, and briefly pointed out the inherent biases of transformer-based models in the context of migrant-related discourse. To sum up, the importance of migration was recognized as one of the essential topics in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Thus, this dissertation has attempted to make an incremental contribution to the AI for Social Good discourse

    Uncoupling inequality: Reflections on the ethics of benchmarks for digital media

    Our collaboration seeks to demonstrate shared interrogation by exploring the ethics of machine learning benchmarks from a socio-technical management perspective with insight from public health and ethnic studies. Benchmarks, such as ImageNet, are annotated open data sets for training algorithms. The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the practical need for ethical information infrastructures to analyze digital and social media, especially related to medicine and race. Social media analysis that obscures Black teen mental health and ignores anti-Asian hate fails as information infrastructure. Despite inadequately handling non-dominant voices, machine learning benchmarks are the basis for analysis in operational systems. Turning to the management literature, we interrogate cross-cutting problems of benchmarks through the lens of coupling, or mutual interdependence between people, technologies, and environments. Uncoupling inequality from machine learning benchmarks may require conceptualizing the social dependencies that build structural barriers to inclusion

    The Use of a Large Language Model for Cyberbullying Detection

    The dominance of social media has added to the channels of bullying for perpetrators. Unfortunately, cyberbullying (CB) is the most prevalent phenomenon in today’s cyber world, and is a severe threat to the mental and physical health of citizens. This opens the need to develop a robust system to prevent bullying content from online forums, blogs, and social media platforms to manage the impact in our society. Several machine learning (ML) algorithms have been proposed for this purpose. However, their performances are not consistent due to high class imbalance and generalisation issues. In recent years, large language models (LLMs) like BERT and RoBERTa have achieved state-of-the-art (SOTA) results in several natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Unfortunately, the LLMs have not been applied extensively for CB detection. In our paper, we explored the use of these models for cyberbullying (CB) detection. We have prepared a new dataset (D2) from existing studies (Formspring and Twitter). Our experimental results for dataset D1 and D2 showed that RoBERTa outperformed other models

    One of the ways in which we recognize our faculty at the University of New Mexico is through Faculty Publications & Creative Works. An annual publication, it highlights our faculty\u27s scholarly and creative activities and achievements and serves as a compendium of UNM faculty efforts during the 1999 calendar year. Faculty Publications & Creative Works strives to illustrate the depth and breadth of research activities performed throughout our University\u27s laboratories, studios and classrooms. We believe that the communication of individual research is a significant method of sharing concepts and thoughts and ultimately inspiring the birth of new ideas. In support of this, UNM faculty during 1999 produced over 2,292 works, including 1,837 scholarly papers and articles, 78 books, 82 book chapters, 175 reviews, 113 creative works and 7 patented works. We are proud of the accomplishments of our faculty which are in part reflected in this book, which illustrates the diversity of intellectual pursuits in support of research and education at the University of New Mexico

    Applications In Sentiment Analysis And Machine Learning For Identifying Public Health Variables Across Social Media

    Twitter, a popular social media outlet, has evolved into a vast source of linguistic data, rich with opinion, sentiment, and discussion. We mined data from several public Twitter endpoints to identify content relevant to healthcare providers and public health regulatory professionals. We began by compiling content related to electronic nicotine delivery systems (or e-cigarettes) as these had become popular alternatives to tobacco products. There was an apparent need to remove high frequency tweeting entities, called bots, that would spam messages, advertisements, and fabricate testimonials. Algorithms were constructed using natural language processing and machine learning to sift human responses from automated accounts with high degrees of accuracy. We found the average hyperlink per tweet, the average character dissimilarity between each individual\u27s content, as well as the rate of introduction of unique words were valuable attributes in identifying automated accounts. We performed a 10-fold Cross Validation and measured performance of each set of tweet features, at various bin sizes, the best of which performed with 97% accuracy. These methods were used to isolate automated content related to the advertising of electronic cigarettes. A rich taxonomy of automated entities, including robots, cyborgs, and spammers, each with different measurable linguistic features were categorized. Electronic cigarette related posts were classified as automated or organic and content was investigated with a hedonometric sentiment analysis. The overwhelming majority (≈ 80%) were automated, many of which were commercial in nature. Others used false testimonials that were sent directly to individuals as a personalized form of targeted marketing. Many tweets advertised nicotine vaporizer fluid (or e-liquid) in various “kid-friendly” flavors including \u27Fudge Brownie\u27, \u27Hot Chocolate\u27, \u27Circus Cotton Candy\u27 along with every imaginable flavor of fruit, which were long ago banned for traditional tobacco products. Others offered free trials, as well as incentives to retweet and spread the post among their own network. Free prize giveaways were also hosted whose raffle tickets were issued for sharing their tweet. Due to the large youth presence on the public social media platform, this was evidence that the marketing of electronic cigarettes needed considerable regulation. Twitter has since officially banned all electronic cigarette advertising on their platform. Social media has the capacity to afford the healthcare industry with valuable feedback from patients who reveal and express their medical decision-making process, as well as self-reported quality of life indicators both during and post treatment. We have studied several active cancer patient populations, discussing their experiences with the disease as well as survivor-ship. We experimented with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) as well as logistic regression to classify tweets as patient related. This led to a sample of 845 breast cancer survivor accounts to study, over 16 months. We found positive sentiments regarding patient treatment, raising support, and spreading awareness. A large portion of negative sentiments were shared regarding political legislation that could result in loss of coverage of their healthcare. We refer to these online public testimonies as “Invisible Patient Reported Outcomes” (iPROs), because they carry relevant indicators, yet are difficult to capture by conventional means of self-reporting. Our methods can be readily applied interdisciplinary to obtain insights into a particular group of public opinions. Capturing iPROs and public sentiments from online communication can help inform healthcare professionals and regulators, leading to more connected and personalized treatment regimens. Social listening can provide valuable insights into public health surveillance strategies

    Foreword by Bob Wilhelm, Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, University of Nebraska-Lincoln: This booklet highlights successes in research, scholarship and creative activity by University of Nebraska–Lincoln faculty during the fiscal year running July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021. It lists investigators, project titles and funding sources on major grants and sponsored awards received during the year; fellowships and other recognitions and honors bestowed on our faculty; books and chapters published by faculty; performances, exhibitions and other examples of creative activity; patents and licensing agreements issued; National Science Foundation I-CORPS teams; and peer-reviewed journal articles and conference presentations.     VaxInsight: an artificial intelligence system to access large-scale public perceptions of vaccination from social media

    Vaccination is considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. A high vaccination rate is required to reduce the prevalence and incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases. However, in the last two decades, there has been a significant and increasing number of people who refuse or delay getting vaccinated and who prohibit their children from receiving vaccinations. Importantly, under-vaccination is associated with infectious disease outbreaks. A good understanding of public perceptions regarding vaccinations is important if we are to develop effective vaccination promotion strategies. Traditional methods of research, such as surveys, suffer limitations that impede our understanding of public perceptions, including resources cost, delays in data collection and analysis, especially in large samples. The popularity of social media (e.g. Twitter), combined with advances in artificial intelligence algorithms (e.g. natural language processing, deep learning), open up new avenues for accessing large scale data on public perceptions related to vaccinations. This dissertation reports on an original and systematic effort to develop artificial intelligence algorithms that will increase our ability to use Twitter discussions to understand vaccine-related perceptions and intentions. The research is framed within the perspectives offered by grounded behavior change theories. Tweets concerning the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine were used to accomplish three major aims: 1) Develop a deep learning-based system to better understand public perceptions of the HPV vaccine, using Twitter data and behavior change theories; 2) Develop a deep learning-based system to infer Twitter users’ demographic characteristics (e.g. gender and home location) and investigate demographic differences in public perceptions of the HPV vaccine; 3) Develop a web-based interactive visualization system to monitor real-time Twitter discussions of the HPV vaccine. For Aim 1, the bi-directional long short-term memory (LSTM) network with attention mechanism outperformed traditional machine learning and competitive deep learning algorithms in mapping Twitter discussions to the theoretical constructs of behavior change theories. Domain-specific embedding trained on HPV vaccine-related Twitter corpus by fastText algorithms further improved performance on some tasks. Time series analyses revealed evolving trends of public perceptions regarding the HPV vaccine. For Aim 2, the character-based convolutional neural network model achieved favorable state-of-the-art performance in Twitter gender inference on a Public Author Profiling challenge. The trained models then were applied to the Twitter corpus and they identified gender differences in public perceptions of the HPV vaccine. The findings on gender differences were largely consistent with previous survey-based studies. For the Twitter users’ home location inference, geo-tagging was framed as text classification tasks that resulted in a character-based recurrent neural network model. The model outperformed machine learning and deep learning baselines on home location tagging. Interstate variations in public perceptions of the HPV vaccine also were identified. For Aim 3, a prototype web-based interactive dashboard, VaxInsight, was built to synthesize HPV vaccine-related Twitter discussions in a comprehendible format. The usability test of VaxInsight showed high usability of the system. Notably, this maybe the first study to use deep learning algorithms to understand Twitter discussions of the HPV vaccine within the perspective of grounded behavior change theories. VaxInsight is also the first system that allows users to explore public health beliefs of vaccine related topics from Twitter. Thus, the present research makes original and systematical contributions to medical informatics by combining cutting-edge artificial intelligence algorithms and grounded behavior change theories. This work also builds a foundation for the next generation of real-time public health surveillance and research
