    System design for periodic data production management

    This research project introduces a new type of information system, the periodic data production management system, and proposes several innovative system design concepts for this application area. Periodic data production systems are common in the information industry for the production of information. These systems process large quantities of data in order to produce statistical reports in predefined intervals. The workflow of such a system is typically distributed world-wide and consists of several semi-computerized production steps which transform data packages. For example, market research companies apply these systems in order to sell marketing information over specified timelines. production of information. There has been identified a lack of concepts for IT-aided management in this area. This thesis clearly defines the complex requirements of periodic data production management systems. It is shown that these systems can be defines as IT-support for planning, monitoring and controlling periodic data production processes. Their significant advantages are that information industry will be enabled to increase production performance, and to ease (and speed up) the identification of the production progress as well as the achievable optimisation potential in order to control rationalisation goals. In addition, this thesis provides solutions for he generic problem how to introduce such a management system on top of an unchangeable periodic data production system. Two promising system designs for periodic data production management are derived, analysed and compared in order to gain knowledge about appropriate concepts and this application area. Production planning systems are the metaphor models used for the so-called closely coupled approach. The metaphor model for the loosely coupled approach is project management. The latter approach is prototyped as an application in the market research industry and used as case study. Evaluation results are real-world experiences which demonstrate the extraordinary efficiency of systems based on the loosely coupled approach. Special is a scenario-based evaluation that accurately demonstrates the many improvements achievable with this approach. Main results are that production planning and process quality can vitally be improved. Finally, among other propositions, it is suggested to concentrate future work on the development of product lines for periodic data production management systems in order to increase their reuse

    Most workflow engines are currently not Cloud-aware. This is due to multiple reasons like no support for transparent scalability, no multi-tenancy support, no ability to store process related data in a Cloud storage, or no support for quality of service enforcements. Recently Cloud based workflow services appeared in the workflow landscape and promise to run workflows in the Cloud. This student reports evaluates current state of the art BPEL and BPMN workflow engines and Cloud based workflow services according to their Cloud- awareness and general workflow functionalities. Identified shortcomings are described and prioritized. As a result of this evaluation the workflow engine WSO2 Stratos is best suited for running workflows in the Cloud, but it lacks native clustering support and quality of service enforcement

    PhD ThesisCloud computing is a service-oriented approach to distributed computing that has many attractive features, including on-demand access to large compute resources. One type of cloud applications are scientific work ows, which are playing an increasingly important role in building applications from heterogeneous components. Work ows are increasingly used in science as a means to capture, share, and publish computational analysis. Clouds can offer a number of benefits to work ow systems, including the dynamic provisioning of the resources needed for computation and storage, which has the potential to dramatically increase the ability to quickly extract new results from the huge amounts of data now being collected. However, there are increasing number of Cloud computing platforms, each with different functionality and interfaces. It therefore becomes increasingly challenging to de ne work ows in a portable way so that they can be run reliably on different clouds. As a consequence, work ow developers face the problem of deciding which Cloud to select and - more importantly for the long-term - how to avoid vendor lock-in. A further issue that has arisen with work ows is that it is common for them to stop being executable a relatively short time after they were created. This can be due to the external resources required to execute a work ow - such as data and services - becoming unavailable. It can also be caused by changes in the execution environment on which the work ow depends, such as changes to a library causing an error when a work ow service is executed. This "work ow decay" issue is recognised as an impediment to the reuse of work ows and the reproducibility of their results. It is becoming a major problem, as the reproducibility of science is increasingly dependent on the reproducibility of scientific work ows. In this thesis we presented new solutions to address these challenges. We propose a new approach to work ow modelling that offers a portable and re-usable description of the work ow using the TOSCA specification language. Our approach addresses portability by allowing work ow components to be systematically specifed and automatically - v - deployed on a range of clouds, or in local computing environments, using container virtualisation techniques. To address the issues of reproducibility and work ow decay, our modelling and deployment approach has also been integrated with source control and container management techniques to create a new framework that e ciently supports dynamic work ow deployment, (re-)execution and reproducibility.     Evaluation of a methodology for migration of the database layer to the cloud based on a research case study

    Cloud computing has the advantage of converting capital expenses into operational costs. This student thesis evaluates a phase driven methodology for migration of the database layer to the Cloud based on a research case study. In addition, a Cloud data migration tool is evaluated. We build an evaluation design for the methodology and the tool. Based on the methodology and with the help of the Cloud data migration tool, an application from the e-Science field is migrated to Amazon Web Services. During the migration project we collect data and document all shortcomings concerning the methodology and the tool. This evaluation data is afterwards analysed, to see how well the methodology and the tool support the migration. The results of the analysis lead to improvement suggestions on the methodology and the Cloud data migration tool

Its contribution is twofold: (1) a uniform specification language, called the Blueprint Specification Language (BSL), for specifying cloud services across several cloud vendors and (2) a set of associated techniques, called the Blueprint Manipulation Techniques (BMTs), for publishing, querying, and composing cloud service specifications with aim to support the flexible design and configuration of an CSBA.

    Predicting and Recovering Link Failure Localization Using Competitive Swarm Optimization for DSR Protocol in MANET

    Portable impromptu organization is a self-putting together, major construction-less, independent remote versatile hub that exists without even a trace of a determined base station or government association. MANET requires no extraordinary foundation as the organization is unique. Multicasting is an urgent issue in correspondence organizations. Multicast is one of the effective methods in MANET. In multicasting, information parcels from one hub are communicated to a bunch of recipient hubs all at once, at a similar time. In this research work, Failure Node Detection and Efficient Node Localization in a MANET situation are proposed. Localization in MANET is a main area that attracts significant research interest. Localization is a method to determine the nodes’ location in the communication network. A novel routing algorithm, which is used for Predicting and Recovering Link Failure Localization using a Genetic Algorithm with Competitive Swarm Optimization (PRLFL-GACSO) Algorithm is proposed in this study to calculate and recover link failure in MANET. The process of link failure detection is accomplished using mathematical modelling of the genetic algorithm and the routing is attained using the Competitive Swarm optimization technique. The result proposed MANET method makes use of the CSO algorithm, which facilitates a well-organized packet transfer from the source node to the destination node and enhances DSR routing performance. Based on node movement, link value, and endwise delay, the optimal route is found. The main benefit of the PRLFL-GACSO Algorithm is it achieves multiple optimal solutions over global information. Further, premature convergence is avoided using Competitive Swarm Optimization (CSO). The suggested work is measured based on the Ns simulator. The presentation metrix are PDR, endwise delay, power consumption, hit ratio, etc. The presentation of the proposed method is almost 4% and 5% greater than the present TEA-MDRP, RSTA-AOMDV, and RMQS-ua methods. After, the suggested method attains greater performance for detecting and recovering link failure. In future work, the hybrid multiway routing protocols are presented to provide link failure and route breakages and liability tolerance at the time of node failure, and it also increases the worth of service aspects, respectively

    MINERVA : Model drIveN and sErvice oRiented framework for the continuous improVement of business process & relAted tools

    Organizations are facing several challenges nowadays, one of the most important ones being their ability to react quickly to changes either to their business process (BP) models or to the software implementing them. These changes can come from different sources: external requirements from partners or the market, or new internal requirements for the way that things are carried out by the defined BPs; they may also arise from improvement opportunities detected for the BPs defined, based on BPs execution monitoring and execution evaluation that is done by the organization, and/or its partners and customers. The increasing complexity of both BPs models and the software implementing them, requires the changes needed or the improvements to be carefully weighed against the impact their introduction will have; they ought also to be carried out in a systematic way to assure a successful development. Two key elements are to provide these requirements: the separation of BPs definition from their implementation to minimize the impact of changes in one to the other, and a process to introduce the changes or improvements in the existing BPs and/or software implementing them. Business Process Management (BPM) provides the means for guiding and supporting the modeling, implementation, deployment, execution and evaluation of BPs in an organization, based on the BP lifecycle. The realization of BPs by means of services provides the basis for separating their definition from the technologies implementing them and helps provide a better response to changes in either of the layers defined -definition and implementation of business processes- with minimum impact on the other. Modeling of both BP and services is a key aspect to support this vision, helping provide traceability between elements from one area to the other, so easing the analysis of the impact of changes, among other things. Models have proven to play an important role in the software development process, one of its key uses in the context of BP realization by means of services is that of designing services at a more abstract level than with specific technologies, also promoting reuse by separating services logic from its implementation. MINERVA: Model drIveN & sErvice oRiented framework for the continuous business process improVement & relAted tools is the framework that has been defined in this thesis work; it takes into account all the aspects mentioned, in which the SOC and MDD paradigms are applied to BPs focusing on their continuous improvement, extending an existing BP lifecycle with explicit execution measurement and improvement activities and elements. It is made up of three dimensions: i) conceptual, which defines the concepts that are managed throughout the framework. ii) methodological, which defines a methodology for service oriented development from BPs with automatic generation of SoaML service models from BPMN2 models, along with a continuous improvement process based on execution measurement of the occurrences of BPs in the organization to carry out the improvement effort. iii) tools support for the whole proposal based on several existing tools we have integrated, along with new ones we have developed. The proposals in MINERVA have been validated by means of an experiment and two case studies carried out in the context of real projects in two organizations, from which, as the main result of the applications performed, it can be concluded that MINERVA can be a useful and key guide for the continuous improvement of BPs realized by services and for the development of service oriented systems from BPs, with automatic generation of service models from BP models.Las organizaciones se enfrentan en la actualidad a varios retos, siendo uno de los más importantes su capacidad para reaccionar rápidamente a los cambios ya sea en sus modelos de procesos de negocio (PN) o en el software que los implementa. Estos cambios pueden provenir de distintas fuentes: requisitos externos de socios o del mercado, o nuevos requisitos internos para la forma en que las cosas se llevan a cabo por los PNs definidos; también pueden surgir de las oportunidades de mejora detectadas para los PNs definidos, en base al monitoreo y evaluación de la ejecución de los PNs llevada a cabo por la organización, y/o sus socios y clientes. La creciente complejidad de los modelos de PNs y del software que los implementa, requiere que los cambios o las mejoras sean sopesados cuidadosamente contra el impacto que su introducción tendrá; también deben llevarse a cabo de manera sistemática para asegurar un desarrollo exitoso. Dos elementos son clave para proveer estos requisitos: la separación de la definición de los PNs de su implementación, para minimizar el impacto de los cambios de uno en otro, y un proceso para introducir los cambios o mejoras en los PNs y/o en el software que los implementa. La Gestión de Procesos de Negocio (Business Process Management, BPM) proporciona los medios para guiar y apoyar el modelado, implementación, despliegue, ejecución y evaluación de PNs en una organización, basado en el ciclo de vida de PNs. La realización de PNs con servicios proporciona la base para la separación de su definición de las tecnologías para implementarlos, y ayuda a proporcionar una mejor respuesta a los cambios en cualquiera de las capas definidas -definición e implementación de procesos de negocio- con un impacto mínimo sobre la otra. El modelado de PNs y servicios es un aspecto clave para apoyar esta visión, ayudando a proveer trazabilidad entre los elementos de un área a la otra, por lo tanto facilitando el análisis del impacto de los cambios, entre otras cosas. Los modelos han demostrado jugar un papel importante en el proceso de desarrollo de software, uno de sus usos principales en el contexto de la realización de PNs con servicios es el de diseñar servicios a un nivel más abstracto que con tecnologías específicas, promoviendo la reutilización separando la lógica de los servicios de su implementacion. MINERVA: Model drIveN & sErvice oRiented framework for the continuous business process improVement & relAted tools es el marco que se ha definido en este trabajo de tesis, que toma en cuenta todos los aspectos mencionados, en el cual los paradigmas de Computación Orientada a Servicios (Service Oriented Computing, SOC) y Desarrollo Dirigido por Modelos (Model Driven Development, MDD) se aplican a los PNs con foco en su mejora continua, extendiendo un ciclo de vida PN existente con actividades y elementos explícitos para la medición de la ejecución y mejora de PNs. El marco se compone de tres dimensiones: i) conceptual, que define los conceptos que se manejan en todo el marco. ii) metodológica, que define una metodología para el desarrollo orientado a servicios desde PNs, con generación automática de modelos de servicio en SoaML desde modelos en BPMN2, junto con un proceso de mejora continua basado en la medición de la ejecución de las ocurrencias de los PNs en la organización para llevar a cabo el esfuerzo de mejora. iii) soporte de herramientas para la propuesta completa basado en la integracion de varias herramientas existentes, junto con otras nuevas que hemos desarrollado. Las propuestas de MINERVA han sido validadas por medio de un experimento y dos casos de estudio realizados en el marco de proyectos reales en dos organizaciones, de los cuales, como resultado principal de las aplicaciones realizadas, se puede concluir que MINERVA puede ser una guía útil y clave para la mejora continua de PNs realizados por servicios y para el desarrollo de sistemas orientados a servicios desde PNs, con generación automática de modelos de servicio a partir de modelos de PN

    Building and monitoring an event-driven microservices ecosystem

    Throughout the years, software architectures have evolved deeply to attempt to address the main issues that have been emerging, mainly due to the ever-changing market needs. The need to provide a way for organizations and teams to build applications independently and with greater agility and speed led to the adoption of microservices, particularly endorsing an asynchronous methodology of communication between them via events. Moreover, the evergrowing demands for high-quality resilient and highly available systems helped pave the path towards a greater focus on strict quality measures, particularly monitoring and other means of assuring the well-functioning of components in production in real-time. Although techniques like logging, monitoring, and alerting are essential to be employed for each microservice, it may not be enough considering an event-driven architecture. Studies have shown that although organizations have been adopting this type of software architecture, they still struggle with the lack of visibility into end-to-end business processes that span multiple microservices. This thesis explores how to guarantee observability over such architecture, thus keeping track of the business processes. It shall do so by providing a tool that facilitates the analysis of the current situation of the ecosystem, as well as allow to view and possibly act upon the data. Two solutions have been explored and are therefore presented thoroughly, alongside a detailed comparison with the purpose of drawing conclusions and providing some guidance to the readers. These outcomes that were produced by the thesis resulted in a paper published and registered to be presented at this year’s edition of the SEI hosted at ISEP.Ao longo dos últimos anos, as arquiteturas de software têm evoluído significativamente de forma a tentar resolver os principais problemas que têm surgindo, principalmente derivados nas necessidades do mercado que estão em constante mudança. A necessidade de providenciar uma forma das organizações e suas equipas construírem aplicações independentemente e com uma maior agilidade e rapidez levou à adoção de microserviços, geralmente aplicando uma metodologia de comunicação assíncrona através de eventos. Para além disso, a constante evolução da necessidade de ter sistemas de qualidade e altamente resilientes e disponíveis, ajudou a direcionar um maior foco para padrões de qualidade mais rigorosos, particularmente no que toca a monitorização e outros meios para assegurar o correto funcionamento de componentes em produção em tempo-real. Embora técnicas como a produção de logs, monitorização e alarmística sejam essenciais para ser aplicadas a cada microserviço, poderá não ser suficiente quando consideramos uma arquitetura baseada em eventos. Estudos recentes apontam para que organizações, apesar de estarem a adotar cada vez mais este tipo de arquiteturas de software, ainda encontram bastantes dificuldades devido à falta de visibilidade que possuem dos processos de negócio que envolvem e se propagam por diversos microserviços. Esta tese explora como garantir visibilidade sobre uma arquitetura como a descrita, e assim conseguir seguir os processos de negócio. O resultado da mesma deverá atender a isso providenciando uma ferramenta que facilita a análise da situação atual do ecossistema, e que possibilita a visualização e a intervenção sobre os dados que são disponibilizados. Foram desenvolvidas duas soluções que serão apresentadas detalhadamente juntamente com uma comparação entre as duas com o propósito de tirar mais conclusões e providenciar alguma orientação ao leitor. A tese originou a criação de um artigo submetido para ser apresentado na edição deste ano do SEI
