    Performance evaluation of detection algorithms for MOMI OFDM systems

    Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 79-86).Introduction of Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) as the base air interface method for Next Generation Network (NGN) will face a number of challenges from hostile channel conditions to interference from other users. This would result in an increase of detection complexity required for mobile systems. Complex detection will reduce the battery life of mobile devices because of the many calculations that have to be done to decode the signal. Very powerful detection algorithms exist but they introduce high detection complexity. NGN will employ different MIMO systems, but this research will consider spatially multiplexed MIMO which is used to improve the data rate and network capacity. In NGN different multi access modulation schemes will be used for uplink and downlink but they both have OFDM as the basic building block. In this work performance of MIMO OFDM is investigated in different channels models and detection algorithms. A low complexity detection scheme is proposed in this research to improve performance of MIMO OFDM. The proposed detection scheme is investigated for different channel characteristics. Realistic channels conditions are introduced to evaluate the performance of the proposed detection scheme. We analyze weaknesses of existing linear detectors and the enhancements that can be done to improve their performance in different channel conditions. Performance of the detectors is evaluated by comparison of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Symbol Error Rate (SER) against signal to noise ratio (SNR). This thesis proposes a detector which shows a higher complexity than linear detectors but less than Maximum Likelihood Detector (MLD). The proposed detector shows significant BER improvement in all channel conditions. For better performance evaluation this work also investigates performance of MIMO OFDM detectors in realistic channels like Kronecker and Weichselberger channel models

    The ever-growing demand for higher quality and faster multimedia content delivery over short distances in home environments drives the quest for higher data rates in wireless personal area networks (WPANs). One of the candidate IEEE 802.15.3a WPAN proposals support data rates up to 480 Mbps by using punctured convolutional codes with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation for a multi-band orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) system over ultra wideband (UWB) channels. In the first part of this dissertation, we combine more powerful near-Shannon-limit turbo codes with bandwidth efficient trellis coded modulation, i.e., turbo trellis coded modulation (TTCM), to further improve the data rates up to 1.2 Gbps. A modified iterative decoder for this TTCM coded MB-OFDM system is proposed and its bit error rate performance under various impulsive noises over both Gaussian and UWB channel is extensively investigated, especially in mismatched scenarios. A robust decoder which is immune to noise mismatch is provided based on comparison of impulsive noises in time domain and frequency domain. The accurate estimation of the dynamic noise model could be very difficult or impossible at the receiver, thus a significant performance degradation may occur due to noise mismatch. In the second part of this dissertation, we prove that the minimax decoder in \cite, which instead of minimizing the average bit error probability aims at minimizing the worst bit error probability, is optimal and robust to certain noise model with unknown prior probabilities in two and higher dimensions. Besides turbo codes, another kind of error correcting codes which approach the Shannon capacity is low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. In the last part of this dissertation, we extend the density evolution method for sum-product decoding using mismatched noises. We will prove that as long as the true noise type and the estimated noise type used in the decoder are both binary-input memoryless output symmetric channels, the output from mismatched log-likelihood ratio (LLR) computation is also symmetric. We will show the Shannon capacity can be evaluated for mismatched LLR computation and it can be reduced if the mismatched LLR computation is not an one-to-one mapping function. We will derive the Shannon capacity, threshold and stable condition of LDPC codes for mismatched BIAWGN and BIL noise types. The results show that the noise variance estimation errors will not affect the Shannon capacity and stable condition, but the errors do reduce the threshold. The mismatch in noise type will only reduce Shannon capacity when LLR computation is based on BIL

    Hybrid solutions to instantaneous MIMO blind separation and decoding: narrowband, QAM and square cases

    Future wireless communication systems are desired to support high data rates and high quality transmission when considering the growing multimedia applications. Increasing the channel throughput leads to the multiple input and multiple output and blind equalization techniques in recent years. Thereby blind MIMO equalization has attracted a great interest.Both system performance and computational complexities play important roles in real time communications. Reducing the computational load and providing accurate performances are the main challenges in present systems. In this thesis, a hybrid method which can provide an affordable complexity with good performance for Blind Equalization in large constellation MIMO systems is proposed first. Saving computational cost happens both in the signal sep- aration part and in signal detection part. First, based on Quadrature amplitude modulation signal characteristics, an efficient and simple nonlinear function for the Independent Compo- nent Analysis is introduced. Second, using the idea of the sphere decoding, we choose the soft information of channels in a sphere, and overcome the so- called curse of dimensionality of the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm and enhance the final results simultaneously. Mathematically, we demonstrate in the digital communication cases, the EM algorithm shows Newton -like convergence.Despite the widespread use of forward -error coding (FEC), most multiple input multiple output (MIMO) blind channel estimation techniques ignore its presence, and instead make the sim- plifying assumption that the transmitted symbols are uncoded. However, FEC induces code structure in the transmitted sequence that can be exploited to improve blind MIMO channel estimates. In final part of this work, we exploit the iterative channel estimation and decoding performance for blind MIMO equalization. Experiments show the improvements achievable by exploiting the existence of coding structures and that it can access the performance of a BCJR equalizer with perfect channel information in a reasonable SNR range. All results are confirmed experimentally for the example of blind equalization in block fading MIMO systems

    Design and analysis of multi-element antenna systems and agile radiofrequency frontends for automotive applications

    Vehicular connectivity serves as one of the major enabling technologies for current applications like driver assistance, safety and infotainment as well as upcoming features like highly automated vehicles - all of which having certain quality of service requirements, e. g. datarate or reliability. This work focuses on vehicular integration of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capable multielement antenna systems and frequency-agile radio frequency (RF) front ends to cover current and upcoming connectivity needs. It is divided in four major parts. For each part, mostly physical layer effects are analyzed (any performance lost on physical layer, cannot be compensated in higher layers), sensitivities are identified and novel concepts are introduced based on the status-quo findings.Fahrzeugvernetzung dient als eine der wesentlichsten Befähigungstechnologien für moderne Fahrerassistenzsysteme und zukünftig auch hochautomatisiertes Fahren. Sowohl die heutigen als auch zukünftige Anwendungen haben besondere Dienstgüteanforderungen, z.B. in Bezug auf die Datenrate oder Verlässlichkeit. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird die Integration von Mehrantennensystemen für MIMO-Funkanwendungen (MIMO: engl. Multiple Input Multiple Output) sowie von frequenzagilen Hochfrequenzfrontends im Fahrzeugumfeld untersucht, um so eine technische Grundlage für zukünftige Anforderungen an die automobile Vernetzung anbieten zu können. Die dabei gewonnenen Erkenntnisse lassen sich in vier Teile gliedern. Grundsätzlich konzentrieren sich die Untersuchungen vorrangig auf die physikalische Ebene.
