A Metamodeling Approach to Teaching Conceptual Modeling at Large
In the authors\u27 university there is a challenge, with respect to Conceptual Modeling topics, of bridging the gap between bachelor-level studies and research work. At bachelor-level, Conceptual Modeling is subordinated to Software Engineering topics consequently making extensive use of software design standards. However, at doctoral level or in project-based work, modeling methods must be scientifically framed within wider-scoped paradigms - Design Science, Enterprise Modeling etc. In order to bridge this gap, we developed a teaching artifact to present Conceptual Modeling as a standalone discipline that can produce its own artifacts, driven by requirements in a variety of domains. The teaching artifact is an agile modeling method that is iteratively implemented by students. The key takeaway revelation for students is that a modeling language is a knowledge schema that can be tailored and migrated for specific purposes just like a database schema, to accommodate an application domain and its modeling requirements
Styles of Scientific Reasoning: A Cultural Rationale for Science Education?
In this paper, we contend that what to teach about scientific reasoning has been bedeviled by a lack of clarity about the construct. Drawing on the insights emerging from a cognitive history of science, we argue for a conception of scientific reasoning based on six âstyles of scientific reasoning.â Each âstyleâ requires its own specific ontological and procedural entities, and invokes its own epistemic values and constructs. Consequently, learning science requires the development of not just content knowledge but, in addition, procedural knowledge, and epistemic knowledge. Previous attempts to develop a coherent account of scientific reasoning have neglected the significance of either procedural knowledge, epistemic knowledge, or both. In contrast, âstyles of reasoningâ do recognize the need for all three elements of domain-specific knowledge, and the complexity and situated nature of scientific practice. Most importantly, âstyles of reasoningâ offer science education a means of valorizing the intellectual and cultural contribution that the sciences have made to contemporary thought, an argument that is sorely missing from common rationales for science education. Second, the construct of âstyles of reasoningâ offers a more coherent conceptual schema for the construct of scientific reasoningâone of the major goals of any education in the sciences
A framework for facilitating functioning knowledge in a computer based instruction end-user computing service course
Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2019.Most South African universities, like many such institutions in the developing world, enrol a
first-year student without the requisite digital competencies to be fully functional in the
information world. The end-user computing service course â a computer literacy course
designed for students who do not major in computer sciences â is common among South
African institutions of higher learning. The use of computer-based instruction systems in enduser
computing service courses at South African universities is widespread.
The use of computer-based instruction systems has many benefits for pedagogy, including
continuous and round-the-clock access to an instructional system for students. Facilitators are
relieved of mundane tasks and innovative instructional approaches, such as blended learning,
flipping the classroom and open learning, become possible. Literature indicates that an
overreliance on such systems for instruction is detrimental, as the learning environment fails
to promote deep thinking and the performance of tasks with understanding. Current models
on technology use in instruction offer generalised guidelines that do not take into account the
unique nature of the end-user computing service course. New guidelines for promoting
functioning knowledge in computer-based instruction in end-user computing service courses
are necessary.
This study explores the use of computer-based instruction systems in an end-user computing
service course and recommends Technology Role in Exploring Learning Orientations
(TRELO), a framework for promoting functioning knowledge. Design science research
approaches are adopted to guide the conception of the research problem and the development
of the framework for promoting functioning knowledge (solution). The problem-solving process
involves understanding the nature of functioning knowledge in an end-user computing service
course and suggesting the role of computer-based instruction systems in supporting learning processes that promote functioning knowledge. The framework presents six kinds of
knowledge that constitute functioning knowledge in an end-user computing service course.
The first two, declarative computer knowledge and disciplinary knowledge focus primarily on
knowledge acquisition and concept formation. The next two, computer utilisation knowledge
and disciplinary innovation knowledge, indicate knowledge application. The last two,
computing reflection and disciplinary reflection, focus on appraising learning actions.
Illustrative demonstrations show that computer-based instruction systems play three
supportive roles in promoting functioning knowledge. Firstly, a content delivery role aids the
acquisition of the declarative knowledge that is necessary for concept formation. Secondly, a
productive role promotes constructive learning and knowledge use. Finally, the systems play
a discursive role that enables reflective thoughts and insights to be shared. The framework is
also compatible with current higher educational instructional methodologies, such as the
flipped classroom approach, blended learning and open learning. The framework is also
consistent with two renowned taxonomies for specifying educational learning outcomes,
Bloomâs taxonomy and the structure of observed learning outcomes (SOLO) taxonomy. The
TRELO framework is offered as an interdisciplinary learning artefact in the field of computer

Automatic generation of software interfaces for supporting decisionmaking processes. An application of domain engineering & machine learning
[EN] Data analysis is a key process to foster knowledge generation in particular domains
or fields of study. With a strong informative foundation derived from the analysis of
collected data, decision-makers can make strategic choices with the aim of obtaining
valuable benefits in their specific areas of action. However, given the steady growth
of data volumes, data analysis needs to rely on powerful tools to enable knowledge
extraction.
Information dashboards offer a software solution to analyze large volumes of
data visually to identify patterns and relations and make decisions according to the
presented information. But decision-makers may have different goals and,
consequently, different necessities regarding their dashboards. Moreover, the variety
of data sources, structures, and domains can hamper the design and implementation
of these tools.
This Ph.D. Thesis tackles the challenge of improving the development process of
information dashboards and data visualizations while enhancing their quality and
features in terms of personalization, usability, and flexibility, among others.
Several research activities have been carried out to support this thesis. First, a
systematic literature mapping and review was performed to analyze different
methodologies and solutions related to the automatic generation of tailored
information dashboards. The outcomes of the review led to the selection of a modeldriven
approach in combination with the software product line paradigm to deal with
the automatic generation of information dashboards.
In this context, a meta-model was developed following a domain engineering
approach. This meta-model represents the skeleton of information dashboards and
data visualizations through the abstraction of their components and features and has
been the backbone of the subsequent generative pipeline of these tools.
The meta-model and generative pipeline have been tested through their
integration in different scenarios, both theoretical and practical. Regarding the theoretical dimension of the research, the meta-model has been successfully
integrated with other meta-model to support knowledge generation in learning
ecosystems, and as a framework to conceptualize and instantiate information
dashboards in different domains.
In terms of the practical applications, the focus has been put on how to transform
the meta-model into an instance adapted to a specific context, and how to finally
transform this later model into code, i.e., the final, functional product. These practical
scenarios involved the automatic generation of dashboards in the context of a Ph.D.
Programme, the application of Artificial Intelligence algorithms in the process, and
the development of a graphical instantiation platform that combines the meta-model
and the generative pipeline into a visual generation system.
Finally, different case studies have been conducted in the employment and
employability, health, and education domains. The number of applications of the
meta-model in theoretical and practical dimensions and domains is also a result itself.
Every outcome associated to this thesis is driven by the dashboard meta-model, which
also proves its versatility and flexibility when it comes to conceptualize, generate, and
capture knowledge related to dashboards and data visualizations

Research on Teaching and Learning In Biology, Chemistry and Physics In ESERA 2013 Conference
This paper provides an overview of the topics in educational research that were published in the ESERA 2013 conference proceedings. The aim of the research was to identify what aspects of the teacher-student-content interaction were investigated frequently and what have been studied rarely. We used the categorization system developed by Kinnunen, LampiselkĂ€, Malmi and Meisalo (2016) and altogether 184 articles were analyzed. The analysis focused on secondary and tertiary level biology, chemistry, physics, and science education. The results showed that most of the studies focus on either the teacherâs pedagogical actions or on the student - content relationship. All other aspects were studied considerably less. For example, the teachersâ thoughts about the studentsâ perceptions and attitudes towards the goals and the content, and the teachersâ conceptions of the studentsâ actions towards achieving the goals were studied only rarely. Discussion about the scope and the coverage of the research in science education in Europe is needed.Peer reviewe
Bioinspired metaheuristic algorithms for global optimization
This paper presents concise comparison study of newly developed bioinspired algorithms for global optimization problems. Three different metaheuristic techniques, namely Accelerated Particle Swarm Optimization (APSO), Firefly Algorithm (FA), and Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) are investigated and implemented in Matlab environment. These methods are compared on four unimodal and multimodal nonlinear functions in order to find global optimum values. Computational results indicate that GWO outperforms other intelligent techniques, and that all aforementioned algorithms can be successfully used for optimization of continuous functions
Experimental Evaluation of Growing and Pruning Hyper Basis Function Neural Networks Trained with Extended Information Filter
In this paper we test Extended Information Filter (EIF) for sequential training of Hyper Basis Function Neural Networks with growing and pruning ability (HBF-GP). The HBF neuron allows different scaling of input dimensions to provide better generalization property when dealing with complex nonlinear problems in engineering practice. The main intuition behind HBF is in generalization of Gaussian type of neuron that applies Mahalanobis-like distance as a distance metrics between input training sample and prototype vector. We exploit concept of neuronâs significance and allow growing and pruning of HBF neurons during sequential learning process. From engineerâs perspective, EIF is attractive for training of neural networks because it allows a designer to have scarce initial knowledge of the system/problem. Extensive experimental study shows that HBF neural network trained with EIF achieves same prediction error and compactness of network topology when compared to EKF, but without the need to know initial state uncertainty, which is its main advantage over EKF
