Asymptotic Mutual Information Statistics of Separately-Correlated Rician Fading MIMO Channels
Precise characterization of the mutual information of MIMO systems is
required to assess the throughput of wireless communication channels in the
presence of Rician fading and spatial correlation. Here, we present an
asymptotic approach allowing to approximate the distribution of the mutual
information as a Gaussian distribution in order to provide both the average
achievable rate and the outage probability. More precisely, the mean and
variance of the mutual information of the separatelycorrelated Rician fading
MIMO channel are derived when the number of transmit and receive antennas grows
asymptotically large and their ratio approaches a finite constant. The
derivation is based on the replica method, an asymptotic technique widely used
in theoretical physics and, more recently, in the performance analysis of
communication (CDMA and MIMO) systems. The replica method allows to analyze
very difficult system cases in a comparatively simple way though some authors
pointed out that its assumptions are not always rigorous. Being aware of this,
we underline the key assumptions made in this setting, quite similar to the
assumptions made in the technical literature using the replica method in their
asymptotic analyses. As far as concerns the convergence of the mutual
information to the Gaussian distribution, it is shown that it holds under some
mild technical conditions, which are tantamount to assuming that the spatial
correlation structure has no asymptotically dominant eigenmodes. The accuracy
of the asymptotic approach is assessed by providing a sizeable number of
numerical results. It is shown that the approximation is very accurate in a
wide variety of system settings even when the number of transmit and receive
antennas is as small as a few units.Comment: - submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory on Nov.

Free Probability based Capacity Calculation of Multiantenna Gaussian Fading Channels with Cochannel Interference
During the last decade, it has been well understood that communication over
multiple antennas can increase linearly the multiplexing capacity gain and
provide large spectral efficiency improvements. However, the majority of
studies in this area were carried out ignoring cochannel interference. Only a
small number of investigations have considered cochannel interference, but even
therein simple channel models were employed, assuming identically distributed
fading coefficients. In this paper, a generic model for a multi-antenna channel
is presented incorporating four impairments, namely additive white Gaussian
noise, flat fading, path loss and cochannel interference. Both point-to-point
and multiple-access MIMO channels are considered, including the case of
cooperating Base Station clusters. The asymptotic capacity limit of this
channel is calculated based on an asymptotic free probability approach which
exploits the additive and multiplicative free convolution in the R- and
S-transform domain respectively, as well as properties of the eta and Stieltjes
transform. Numerical results are utilized to verify the accuracy of the derived
closed-form expressions and evaluate the effect of the cochannel interference.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
ML Detection in Phase Noise Impaired SIMO Channels with Uplink Training
The problem of maximum likelihood (ML) detection in training-assisted
single-input multiple-output (SIMO) systems with phase noise impairments is
studied for two different scenarios, i.e. the case when the channel is
deterministic and known (constant channel) and the case when the channel is
stochastic and unknown (fading channel). Further, two different operations with
respect to the phase noise sources are considered, namely, the case of
identical phase noise sources and the case of independent phase noise sources
over the antennas. In all scenarios the optimal detector is derived for a very
general parametrization of the phase noise distribution. Further, a high
signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) analysis is performed to show that
symbol-error-rate (SER) floors appear in all cases. The SER floor in the case
of identical phase noise sources (for both constant and fading channels) is
independent of the number of antenna elements. In contrast, the SER floor in
the case of independent phase noise sources is reduced when increasing the
number of antenna elements (for both constant and fading channels). Finally,
the system model is extended to multiple data channel uses and it is shown that
the conclusions are valid for these setups, as well.Comment: (To appear in IEEE Transactions on Communications, 2015), Contains

Large-System Analysis of Joint Channel and Data Estimation for MIMO DS-CDMA Systems
This paper presents a large-system analysis of the performance of joint
channel estimation, multiuser detection, and per-user decoding (CE-MUDD) for
randomly-spread multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) direct-sequence
code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) systems. A suboptimal receiver based on
successive decoding in conjunction with linear minimum mean-squared error
(LMMSE) channel estimation is investigated. The replica method, developed in
statistical mechanics, is used to evaluate the performance in the large-system
limit, where the number of users and the spreading factor tend to infinity
while their ratio and the number of transmit and receive antennas are kept
constant. The performance of the joint CE-MUDD based on LMMSE channel
estimation is compared to the spectral efficiencies of several receivers based
on one-shot LMMSE channel estimation, in which the decoded data symbols are not
utilized to refine the initial channel estimates. The results imply that the
use of joint CE-MUDD significantly reduces rate loss due to transmission of
pilot signals, especially for multiple-antenna systems. As a result, joint
CE-MUDD can provide significant performance gains, compared to the receivers
based on one-shot channel estimation.Comment: The paper was resubmitted to IEEE Trans. Inf. Theor
