A Study on Human Motion Acquisition and Recognition Employing Structured Motion Database

The automaticity of such a system with these capabilities has vital importance in real-life scenarios. With the increasing number of applications, the demand for a human motion acquisition system is gaining importance day-by-day. We develop such kind of acquisition system based on body-parts modeling strategy. The system is able to acquire the motion by positioning body joints and interpreting those joints by the inter-parts inclination. Besides the development of the acquisition system, there is increasing need for a reliable human motion recognition system in recent years. There are a number of researches on motion recognition is performed in last two decades. At the same time, an enormous amount of bulk motion datasets are becoming available. Therefore, it becomes an indispensable task to develop a motion database that can deal with large variability of motions efficiently. We have developed such a system based on the structured motion database concept. In order to gain a perspective on this issue, we have analyzed various aspects of the motion database with a view to establishing a standard recognition scheme. The conventional structured database is subjected to improvement by considering three aspects: directional organization, nearest neighbor searching problem resolution, and prior direction estimation. In order to investigate and analyze comprehensively the effect of those aspects on motion recognition, we have adopted two forms of motion representation, eigenspace-based motion compression, and B-Tree structured database. Moreover, we have also analyzed the two important constraints in motion recognition: missing information and clutter outdoor motions. Two separate systems based on these constraints are also developed that shows the suitable adoption of the constraints. However, several people occupy a scene in practical cases. We have proposed a detection-tracking-recognition integrated action recognition system to deal with multiple people case. The system shows decent performance in outdoor scenarios. The experimental results empirically illustrate the suitability and compatibility of various factors of the motion recognition

Automated Detection and Counting of Pedestrians on an Urban Roadside
This thesis implements an automated system that counts pedestrians with 85% accuracy. Two approaches have been considered and evaluated in terms of count accuracy, cost and ease of deployment. The first approach employs the Autoscope Solo Terra, a traffic camera which is widely used to monitor vehicular traffic. The Solo Terra supports an image processing-based detector that counts the number of objects crossing user-defined areas in the captured image. The count is updated based on the amount of movement across the selected regions. Therefore, a second approach has been considered that uses a histogram of oriented gradients (HoG), an advanced vision based algorithm proposed by Dalal et al. which distinguishes a pedestrian from a non-pedestrian based on an omega shape formed by the head and shoulders of a human being. The implemented detection software processes video frames that are streamed from a low-cost digital camera. The frames are divided into sub-regions which are scanned for an omega shape whenever movement is detected in those regions. It has been found that the HoG-based approach degrades in performance due to occlusion under dense pedestrian traffic conditions whereas the Solo Terra approach appears to be more robust. Undercounts and overcounts were encountered using the Solo Terra approach. To combat the disadvantages of both the approaches, they were integrated to form a single system where count is incremented predominantly using the Solo Terra. The HoG-based approach corrects the obtained count under certain conditions. A preliminary prototype of the integrated system has been verified

Chapter 3 addresses challenges in radio link and system design in indoor scenarios. Given the fact that most human activities take place in indoor environments, the need for supporting ubiquitous indoor data connectivity and location/tracking service becomes even more important than in the previous decades. Specific technical challenges addressed in this section are(i), modelling complex indoor radio channels for effective antenna deployment, (ii), potential of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radios for supporting higher data rates, and (iii), feasible indoor localisation and tracking techniques, which are summarised in three dedicated sections of this chapter
Repurposing existing skeletal spatial structure (SkS) system designs using the Field Information Modeling (FIM) framework for generative decision-support in future construction projects
Skeletal spatial structure (SkS) systems are modular systems which have shown promise to support mass customization, and sustainability in construction. SkS have been used extensively in the reconstruction efforts since World War II, particularly to build geometrically flexible and free-form structures. By employing advanced digital engineering and construction practices, the existing SkS designs may be repurposed to generate new optimal designs that satisfy current construction demands of contemporary societies. To this end, this study investigated the application of point cloud processing using the Field Information Modeling (FIM) framework for the digital documentation and generative redesign of existing SkS systems. Three new algorithms were proposed to (i) expand FIM to include generative decision-support; (ii) generate as-built building information modeling (BIM) for SkS; and (iii) modularize SkS designs with repeating patterns for optimal production and supply chain management. These algorithms incorporated a host of new AI-inspired methods, including support vector machine (SVM) for decision support; Bayesian optimization for neighborhood definition; Bayesian Gaussian mixture clustering for modularization; and Monte Carlo stochastic multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) for selection of the top Pareto front solutions obtained by the non-dominant sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA II). The algorithms were tested and validated on four real-world point cloud datasets to solve two generative modeling problems, namely, engineering design optimization and facility location optimization. It was observed that the proposed Bayesian neighborhood definition outperformed particle swarm and uniform sampling by 34% and 27%, respectively. The proposed SVM-based linear feature detection outperformed k-means and spectral clustering by 56% and 9%, respectively. Finally, the NSGA II algorithm combined with the stochastic MCDM produced diverse “top four” solutions based on project-specific criteria. The results indicate promise for future utilization of the framework to produce training datasets for generative adversarial networks that generate new designs based only on stakeholder requirements
