    Trends in Statistical Codicology

    Get PDF
The application of statistical techniques to the study of manuscript books, based on the analysis of large data sets acquired through the archaeological observation of manuscripts, remains to this day one of the most original trends in codicological research. This volume aims to present, in English translation, a series of recent and significant papers by means of which the statistical approach continues to demonstrate its vast potential

eCodicology: The Computer and the Mediaeval Library

Through digitisation a large amount of mediaeval manuscript collection became publicly available, but the resources in time and human attention have not grown in proportion of digitised sources. Therefore, the question arises whether the computer can help to evaluate larger amounts of material like this. The project eCodicology has focused its research on the detection and measuring of the different layout features by using methods of pattern recognition for further analyses. The present paper gives insights into the developed software, SWATI – the Software Workflow for the Automatic Tagging of Images, and CodiVis, a visualisation framework for high-dimensional data sets, and how it can help the codicologist to explore the massive amount of heterogeneous datasets. The paper also focusses the various challenges, such as uncertain data due to irregularities and missing information in the manuscript’s catalogues, as well as the accuracy of the image processing results

This paper presents the CodicoDaViz research project, developed with the goal of applying data visualisation techniques to the field of codicology. Adding to the multidisciplinary nature of digital humanities (DH), this project brings together a group of experts of DH, business intelligence and computer science. Using Hebrew manuscript data as a starting point, CodicoDaViz proposes an environment for exploratory analysis to be used by Humanities experts to deepen their understanding of codicological data, and to formulate new research hypotheses. In this paper we demonstrate how data visualisation was instrumental in understanding and structuring the dataset. Examples of the dashboards that have been designed (in Tableau) to enable an interactive and ad-hoc exploration of data are also discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Ways of Reading, Models for Text, and the Usefulness of Dead People

The definition of text is still a live issue with important implications for emerging forms of digital textuality. This paper proposes that no single definition of text is sufficient to account for all manifestations of textuality. Medieval textuality is a test case: four different models for text are offered, corresponding to ways in which modern medievalists approach medieval texts. Studying medieval texts has value not only to support historically informed theories of reading and writing, but also to suggest alternative models of organizing, representing, and processing textual information
