Rethinking authenticity in digital art preservation
In this paper I am discussing the repositioning of traditional
conservation concepts of historicity, authenticity and versioning
in relation to born digital artworks, upon findings from my
research on preservation of computer-based artifacts. Challenges
for digital art preservation and previous work in this area are
described, followed by an analysis of digital art as a process of
components interaction, as performance and in terms of
instantiations. The concept of dynamic authenticity is proposed,
and it is argued that our approach to digital artworks preservation
should be variable and digital object responsive, with a level of
variability tolerance to match digital art intrinsic variability and
dynamic authenticity
Libraries and Museums in the Flat World: Are They Becoming Virtual Destinations?
In his recent book, “TheWorld is Flat”, Thomas L. Friedman reviews the impact of networks on globalization. The emergence of the Internet, web browsers, computer applications talking to each other through the Internet, and the open source software, among others, made the world flatter and created an opportunity for individuals to collaborate and compete globally. Friedman predicts that “connecting all the knowledge centers on the planet together into a single global network…could usher in an amazing era of prosperity and innovation”. Networking also is changing the ways by which libraries and museums provide access to information sources and services. In the flat world, libraries and museums are no longer a physical “place” only: they are becoming “virtual destinations”. Long-Term Preservation of Digital Records, Part I: A Theoretical Basis
The Information Revolution is making preservation of digital records an urgent issue. Archivists have grappled with the question of how to achieve this for about 15 years. We focus on limitations to preservation, identifying precisely what can be preserved and what cannot. Our answer comes from the philosophical theory of knowledge, especially its discussion about the limits of what can be communicated.
Philosophers have taught that answers to critical questions have been obscured by "failure to understand the logic of our language". We can clarify difficulties by paying extremely close attention to the meaning of words such as 'knowledge', 'information', 'the original', and 'dynamic'.
What is valuable in transmitted and stored messages, and what should be preserved, is an abstraction, the pattern inherent in each transmitted and stored digital record. This answer has, in fact, been lurking just below the surface of archival literature.
To make progress, archivists must collaborate with software engineers. Understanding perspectives across disciplinary boundaries will be needed.
Scan to BIM for 3D reconstruction of the papal basilica of saint Francis in Assisi In Italy
The historical building heritage, present in the most of Italian cities centres, is, as part of the construction sector, a working potential,
but unfortunately it requires planning of more complex and problematic interventions. However, policies to support on the existing
interventions, together with a growing sensitivity for the recovery of assets, determine the need to implement specific studies and to
analyse the specific problems of each site. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the methodology and the results obtained from
integrated laser scanning activity in order to have precious architectural information useful not only from the cultural heritage point
of view but also to construct more operative and powerful tools, such as BIM (Building Information Modelling) aimed to the
management of this cultural heritage. The Papal Basilica and the Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi in Italy are, in fact,
characterized by unique and complex peculiarities, which require a detailed knowledge of the sites themselves to ensure visitor’s
security and safety. For such a project, we have to take in account all the people and personnel normally present in the site, visitors
with disabilities and finally the needs for cultural heritage preservation and protection. This aim can be reached using integrated
systems and new technologies, such as Internet of Everything (IoE), capable of connecting people, things (smart sensors, devices and
actuators; mobile terminals; wearable devices; etc.), data/information/knowledge and processes to reach the desired goals. The IoE
system must implement and support an Integrated Multidisciplinary Model for Security and Safety Management (IMMSSM) for the
specific context, using a multidisciplinary approach
Preservation Practices of New Media Artists: Challenges, Strategies, and Attitudes in the Personal Management of Artworks
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the preservation practices of new media artists, in particular those working outside of the scope of major collecting institutions, examining how these artists preserve new media artworks in their custody. Design/methodology/approach: The paper builds case studies of seven new media artists of differing practices and artistic approaches. For each case study, semi-structured interviews with the artists were conducted in conjunction with visits to the artists’ studios. Findings: The study finds that new media artists face a number of shared preservation challenges and employ a range of preservation strategies, and that these challenges and strategies differ markedly from that of art museums and cultural heritage institutions. Research limitations/implications: This study considers preservation practices for new media artists generally. Further research into specific communities of artistic practice could profitably build upon this overall framework. Practical implications: The findings of this research pose a number of implications for art museums and cultural heritage institutions, suggesting new ways these institutions might consider supporting the preservation of new media artworks before works enter into institutional custody. Originality/value: The literature on new media art preservation emphasizes the importance of working with artists early in the life cycle of digital artworks. This study advances this by investigating preservation from the perspective of new media artists, deepening the understanding of challenges and potential preservation strategies for these artworks prior to entering or outside of institutional custody
Planning strategically, designing architecturally : a framework for digital library services
In an era of unprecedented technological innovation and evolving user expectations and information seeking behaviour, we are arguably now an online society, with digital services increasingly common and increasingly preferred. As a trusted information provider, libraries are in an advantageous position to respond, but this requires integrated strategic and enterprise architecture planning, for information technology (IT) has evolved from a support role to a strategic role, providing the core management systems, communication networks, and delivery channels of the modern library. Further, IT components do not function in isolation from one another, but are interdependent elements of distributed and multidimensional systems encompassing people, processes, and technologies, which must consider social, economic, legal, organisational, and ergonomic requirements and relationships, as well as being logically sound from a technical perspective. Strategic planning provides direction, while enterprise architecture strategically aligns and holistically integrates business and information system architectures. While challenging, such integrated planning should be regarded as an opportunity for the library to evolve as an enterprise in the digital age, or at minimum, to simply keep pace with societal change and alternative service providers. Without strategy, a library risks being directed by outside forces with independent motivations and inadequate understanding of its broader societal role. Without enterprise architecture, it risks technological disparity, redundancy, and obsolescence. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this conceptual paper provides an integrated framework for strategic and architectural planning of digital library services. Curating E-Mails; A life-cycle approach to the management and preservation of e-mail messages
E-mail forms the backbone of communications in many modern institutions and organisations and is a valuable type of organisational, cultural, and historical record. Successful management and preservation of valuable e-mail messages and collections is therefore vital if organisational accountability is to be achieved and historical or cultural memory retained for the future. This requires attention by all stakeholders across the entire life-cycle of the e-mail records.
This instalment of the Digital Curation Manual reports on the several issues involved in managing and curating e-mail messages for both current and future use. Although there is no 'one-size-fits-all' solution, this instalment outlines a generic framework for e-mail curation and preservation, provides a summary of current approaches, and addresses the technical, organisational and cultural challenges to successful e-mail management and longer-term curation.
