    IT&C AND THE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

    In this paper I explore the phenomenon of personal development in an "unconventional" way. The contribution of this paper is to use a different method (i.e. in -depth interviews) to focus on a different unit of analysis (i.e. managerial couples) in a different context. In addition the information and communication technologies (IT&C) are entering all the fields: business, state institutions, education and the day-by-day life. This paper contributes to the field by suggesting a different theoretical approach to personal development conflict as a decision-making problem. I propose using social exchange theory to explain personal development conflict as a complex evaluation of cost and benefits of exchanges between multiple actors on the basis of personal values and beliefs. The critical thinking is one of the most popular learning objects in the English speaking countries and they are also offering most of hopes to distance learning and also the critical thinking is a reflective one. This paper suggests that the field may be overlooking some fundamental variables. Content analysis of the interview transcripts reveals the crucial importance of implicit values and benefits, immanent or tacit actions such as decision-making and learning and communication and mutual understanding. Communication and personal development is essential in this respect. It's difficult to separate work, family and personal development and communication is fundamental in all directions. To conceptualize personal development conflict as a decision-making problem while taking into account exchanges and interactions between multiple actors and we can draw on equity theory or social exchange theory.Future research should test whether decision making is central for the understanding of personal conflict only in managers or in other collectives as well. I recommend the couple as the best unit of analysis to address issues such as accommodation within couples and complex decision- making in both individuals and couples. Future research should draw on boarder and different samples to replicate our study and check the generalizability of its findings - because if it can be generalized it may have strong implication for theoretical development.e-learning, critical thinking, IT training

    Blending Learning and Inference in Structured Prediction

    In this paper we derive an efficient algorithm to learn the parameters of structured predictors in general graphical models. This algorithm blends the learning and inference tasks, which results in a significant speedup over traditional approaches, such as conditional random fields and structured support vector machines. For this purpose we utilize the structures of the predictors to describe a low dimensional structured prediction task which encourages local consistencies within the different structures while learning the parameters of the model. Convexity of the learning task provides the means to enforce the consistencies between the different parts. The inference-learning blending algorithm that we propose is guaranteed to converge to the optimum of the low dimensional primal and dual programs. Unlike many of the existing approaches, the inference-learning blending allows us to learn efficiently high-order graphical models, over regions of any size, and very large number of parameters. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, while presenting state-of-the-art results in stereo estimation, semantic segmentation, shape reconstruction, and indoor scene understanding

    200 p.Tradicionalmente, el acento extranjero se ha estudiado desde una perspectiva holística, es decir, tratándolo como un todo en lugar de como una serie de rasgos individuales que suceden simultáneamente. Los estudios previos que se han centrado en alguno de estos rasgos individuales lo han hecho generalmente en el plano suprasegmental (Tajima et al., 1997, Munro & Derwing, 2001, Hahn, 2004, etc.). En esta tesis se lleva a cabo un análisis del acento extranjero desde un punto de vista segmental. Considerando que no existe mucha investigación en este campo, nuestro principal objetivo es averiguar si los resultados de estudios holísticos previos pueden ser extrapolados al nivel segmental. Con el objetivo de analizar el nivel segmental en detalle, en esta tesis se presentan técnicas que hacen uso de nuevas tecnologías. Para recabar la mayor información posible, los experimentos perceptivos son llevados a cabo con oyentes con muy distintos perfiles lingüísticos en términos de primera lengua o conocimiento de la segunda lengua y comparados con la literatura existente. Nuestros resultados muestran que algunos efectos importantes relativos a la producción y percepción de segmentos acentuados pueden pasar inadvertidos en un análisis holístico y acreditan la necesidad de continuar realizando estudios de unidades mínimas para comprender en profundidad los efectos del acento extranjero en la comunicación

    Automatic Prediction of Facial Trait Judgments: Appearance vs. Structural Models

    Evaluating other individuals with respect to personality characteristics plays a crucial role in human relations and it is the focus of attention for research in diverse fields such as psychology and interactive computer systems. In psychology, face perception has been recognized as a key component of this evaluation system. Multiple studies suggest that observers use face information to infer personality characteristics. Interactive computer systems are trying to take advantage of these findings and apply them to increase the natural aspect of interaction and to improve the performance of interactive computer systems. Here, we experimentally test whether the automatic prediction of facial trait judgments (e.g. dominance) can be made by using the full appearance information of the face and whether a reduced representation of its structure is sufficient. We evaluate two separate approaches: a holistic representation model using the facial appearance information and a structural model constructed from the relations among facial salient points. State of the art machine learning methods are applied to a) derive a facial trait judgment model from training data and b) predict a facial trait value for any face. Furthermore, we address the issue of whether there are specific structural relations among facial points that predict perception of facial traits. Experimental results over a set of labeled data (9 different trait evaluations) and classification rules (4 rules) suggest that a) prediction of perception of facial traits is learnable by both holistic and structural approaches; b) the most reliable prediction of facial trait judgments is obtained by certain type of holistic descriptions of the face appearance; and c) for some traits such as attractiveness and extroversion, there are relationships between specific structural features and social perceptions

    Let's Get the FACS Straight -- Reconstructing Obstructed Facial Features

    The human face is one of the most crucial parts in interhuman communication. Even when parts of the face are hidden or obstructed the underlying facial movements can be understood. Machine learning approaches often fail in that regard due to the complexity of the facial structures. To alleviate this problem a common approach is to fine-tune a model for such a specific application. However, this is computational intensive and might have to be repeated for each desired analysis task. In this paper, we propose to reconstruct obstructed facial parts to avoid the task of repeated fine-tuning. As a result, existing facial analysis methods can be used without further changes with respect to the data. In our approach, the restoration of facial features is interpreted as a style transfer task between different recording setups. By using the CycleGAN architecture the requirement of matched pairs, which is often hard to fullfill, can be eliminated. To proof the viability of our approach, we compare our reconstructions with real unobstructed recordings. We created a novel data set in which 36 test subjects were recorded both with and without 62 surface electromyography sensors attached to their faces. In our evaluation, we feature typical facial analysis tasks, like the computation of Facial Action Units and the detection of emotions. To further assess the quality of the restoration, we also compare perceptional distances. We can show, that scores similar to the videos without obstructing sensors can be achieved.Comment: VISAPP 2023 pape

    Pose Independent Face Recognition by Localizing Local Binary Patterns via Deformation Components

    In this paper we address the problem of pose independent face recognition with a gallery set containing one frontal face image per enrolled subject while the probe set is composed by just a face image undergoing pose variations. The approach uses a set of aligned 3D models to learn deformation components using a 3D Morph able Model (3DMM). This further allows fitting a 3DMM efficiently on an image using a Ridge regression solution, regularized on the face space estimated via PCA. Then the approach describes each profile face by computing Local Binary Pattern (LBP) histograms localized on each deformed vertex, projected on a rendered frontal view. In the experimental result we evaluate the proposed method on the CMU Multi-PIE to assess face recognition algorithm across pose. We show how our process leads to higher performance than regular baselines reporting high recognition rate considering a range of facial poses in the probe set, up to ±45°. Finally we remark that our approach can handle continuous pose variations and it is comparable with recent state-of-the-art approaches

    Guidelines for an educational agreement policy in Spain

    The increase of the social concern for educative results with international comparison of the National Educational Systems performance has had an effect of the mediate diffusion of PISA reports among OCDE country members. In some of them, the poor global results obtained has shocked the public opinion that has started to look for political responsibilities of what is perceived as a progressive deterioration of the Educational System quality. This is what has happened in Spain where the publication of these reports has coincide with the diffusion of other comparative analysis of educational indicators among the 27 members of the European Union. Because of this there are voices strongly claiming for a large State Agreement on Educational Policy among the big parliamentary forces, social agents( unions and business men) and the different sectors of the educational community ( managers, teaching staff, families and students), to strengthen education and improve its results
