Enabling situational awareness of business processes
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to explore the ways of integrating situational awareness into business process management for the purpose of realising hyper automated business processes. Such business processes will help improve their customer experiences, enhance the reliability of service delivery and lower the operational cost for a more competitive and sustainable business. Design/methodology/approach: Ontology has been deployed to establish the context modelling method, and the event handling mechanisms are developed on the basis of event calculus. An approach on performance of the proposed approach has been evaluation by checking the cost savings from the simulation of a large number of business processes. Findings: In this research, the authors have formalised the context presentation for a business process with a focus on rules and entities to support context perception; proposed a system architecture to illustrate the structure and constitution of a supporting system for intelligent and situation aware business process management; developed real-time event elicitation and interpretation mechanisms to operationalise the perception of contextual dynamics and real-time responses; and evaluated the applicability of the proposed approaches and the performance improvement to business processes. Originality/value: This paper presents a framework covering process context modelling, system architecture and real-time event handling mechanisms to support situational awareness of business processes. The reported research is based on our previous work on radio frequency identification-enabled applications and context-aware business process management with substantial extension to process context modelling and process simulation. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited
Intelligent wireless web services: context-aware computing in construction-logistics supply chain
The construction industry has incurred a considerable amount of waste as a result of poor logistics supply chain network management. Therefore, managing logistics in the construction industry is critical. An effective logistic system ensures delivery of the right products and services to the right players at the right time while minimising costs and rewarding all sectors based on value added to the supply chain. This paper reports on an on-going research study on the concept of context-aware services delivery in the construction project supply chain logistics. As part of the emerging wireless technologies, an Intelligent Wireless Web (IWW) using context-aware computing capability represents the next generation ICT application to construction-logistics management. This intelligent system has the potential of serving and improving the construction logistics through access to context-specific data, information and services. Existing mobile communication deployments in the construction industry rely on static modes of information delivery and do not take into account the workerâs changing context and dynamic project conditions. The major problems in these applications are lack of context-specificity in the distribution of information, services and other project resources, and lack of cohesion with the existing desktop based ICT infrastructure. The research works focus on identifying the context dimension such as user context, environmental context and project context, selection of technologies to capture context-parameters such wireless sensors and RFID, selection of supporting technologies such as wireless communication, Semantic Web, Web Services, agents, etc. The process of integration of Context-Aware Computing and Web-Services to facilitate the creation of intelligent collaboration environment for managing construction logistics will take into account all the necessary critical parameters such as storage, transportation, distribution, assembly, etc. within off and on-site project
Hypermedia Learning Objects System - On the Way to a Semantic Educational Web
While eLearning systems become more and more popular in daily education,
available applications lack opportunities to structure, annotate and manage
their contents in a high-level fashion. General efforts to improve these
deficits are taken by initiatives to define rich meta data sets and a
semanticWeb layer. In the present paper we introduce Hylos, an online learning
system. Hylos is based on a cellular eLearning Object (ELO) information model
encapsulating meta data conforming to the LOM standard. Content management is
provisioned on this semantic meta data level and allows for variable,
dynamically adaptable access structures. Context aware multifunctional links
permit a systematic navigation depending on the learners and didactic needs,
thereby exploring the capabilities of the semantic web. Hylos is built upon the
more general Multimedia Information Repository (MIR) and the MIR adaptive
context linking environment (MIRaCLE), its linking extension. MIR is an open
system supporting the standards XML, Corba and JNDI. Hylos benefits from
manageable information structures, sophisticated access logic and high-level
authoring tools like the ELO editor responsible for the semi-manual creation of
meta data and WYSIWYG like content editing.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
Research was limited on proposing frameworks and platforms that have predefined behavior toward applications. This thesis attempts to extend background works by proposing new concepts serving as foundation for a flexible approach for building context-aware applications. The thesis examines the state of the art of context-aware computing, then adopts well-established software design principles and a functional decomposition for designing a reference model for context management enabling seamless integration of context-awareness into applications. Also, the thesis studies the use of context in common applications and proposes a context-centric modeling approach which allows the creation of a graph-based representation where entities are connected to each other through links representing context. Furthermore, the context graph decouples the presentation and the semantics of context, leaving each application to manage the appropriate semantic for their context data. Case studies are conducted for the evaluation of the proposed system in terms of its support for the creation of applications enhanced with context-awareness. A simulation study is performed to analyze the performance properties of the proposed system. The result of this thesis is the introduction of a novel approach for supporting the creation of context-aware applications that supports the integration of context-awareness to existing applications. It empowers developers as well as users to participate in the creation process, thereby reducing usability issuesEVRY-INT (912282302) / SudocSudocFranceF

Supporting Location Privacy Management through Feedback and Control
Participation in modern, socially-focused digital systems involves a large degree of privacy management, i.e. controlling who may access what information under what circumstances. Effective privacy management (control) requires that mobile systemsâ users be able to make informed privacy decisions as their experience and knowledge of a system progresses. By informed, we mean users be aware of the actual information flow. Moreover, privacy preferences vary across the context and it is hard to define privacy policy that reflects the dynamic nature of our lives.
This research explores the problem of supporting awareness of information flow and designing usable interfaces for maintaining privacy policies ad-hoc. We borrow from the world of Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) and propose to incorporate social translucence, a design approach that âsupports coherent behaviour by making participants and their activities visible to one anotherâ. We use the characteristics of social translucence, namely visibility, awareness and accountability in order to introduce social norms in spatially dispersed systems. Our research is driven by two questions: (1) how can artifacts from real world social interaction, such as responsibility, be embedded into mobile interaction; and (2) can systems be designed in which both privacy violations and the burden of privacy management is minimized.
The contributions of our work are: (1) an implementation of Buddy Tracker, privacy-aware location-sharing application based on the social translucence; (2) the design and evaluation of the concept of real-time feedback as a means of incorporating social translucence in location-sharing scenarios; and finally (3) a novel interface for ad-hoc privacy management called Privacy-Shake.
We explore the role of real-time feedback for privacy management in the context of Buddy Tracker. Informed by focus group discussions, interviews, surveys and two field trials of Buddy Tracker we found that when using a system that provided real-time feedback, people were more accountable for their actions and reduced the number of unreasonable location requests. From our observations we develop concrete design guidelines for incorporating real-time feedback into information sharing applications in a manner that ensures social acceptance of the technology
A Flexible Approach to Web Component Packaging
Web-based applications are rapidly making the transition to service oriented architectures, but this breaking up of single monolithic applications into multiple cooperating components creates complexity and management problems for system designers. This paper discusses a solution to one of the emerging complexity-related problems: how to package and distribute applications based on Web components for rapid and flexible deployment. To this end, a packaging framework was designed and reference implementations of package building and package installation tools were developed. The usability of such tools was then tested by a sample of users in the context of online information management systems, because of the availability of Web components and the inherent network-aware nature of such systems. The results are promising and demonstrate that the approach taken is reasonable and understandable and that such supporting technology for systems based on Web components is likely to positively impact the growth of advanced Web applications. In addition, the process of developing a proof-of-concept packaging system and the feedback from users has provided a useful set of requirements and guidelines for building such systems in future
Towards an Efficient Context-Aware System: Problems and Suggestions to Reduce Energy Consumption in Mobile Devices
Looking for optimizing the battery consumption is
an open issue, and we think it is feasible if we analyze the
battery consumption behavior of a typical context-aware
application to reduce context-aware operations at runtime.
This analysis is based on different context sensors
configurations. Actually existing context-aware approaches are
mainly based on collecting and sending context data to external
components, without taking into account how expensive are
these operations in terms of energy consumption. As a first
result of our work in progress, we are proposing a way for
reducing the context data publishing. We have designed a
testing battery consumption architecture supported by Nokia
Energy Profiler tool to verify consumption in different scenarios
Middleware Technologies for Cloud of Things - a survey
The next wave of communication and applications rely on the new services
provided by Internet of Things which is becoming an important aspect in human
and machines future. The IoT services are a key solution for providing smart
environments in homes, buildings and cities. In the era of a massive number of
connected things and objects with a high grow rate, several challenges have
been raised such as management, aggregation and storage for big produced data.
In order to tackle some of these issues, cloud computing emerged to IoT as
Cloud of Things (CoT) which provides virtually unlimited cloud services to
enhance the large scale IoT platforms. There are several factors to be
considered in design and implementation of a CoT platform. One of the most
important and challenging problems is the heterogeneity of different objects.
This problem can be addressed by deploying suitable "Middleware". Middleware
sits between things and applications that make a reliable platform for
communication among things with different interfaces, operating systems, and
architectures. The main aim of this paper is to study the middleware
technologies for CoT. Toward this end, we first present the main features and
characteristics of middlewares. Next we study different architecture styles and
service domains. Then we presents several middlewares that are suitable for CoT
based platforms and lastly a list of current challenges and issues in design of
CoT based middlewares is discussed.Comment: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352864817301268,
