    Modeling and dynamic stability of distributed generations

    The objective of this dissertation is to develop dynamic models for distributed generations (DG), to investigate their impacts on dynamic stability of power distribution systems, and to design controllers for DGs to improve the dynamic stability of the integrated power distribution system.;A two-year distributed generation (DG) project at West Virginia University (WVU) evaluated the impact of various DG sources on actual distribution systems by performing computer simulations. The data is supplied by two regional electric utilities of two actual distribution systems each. In this project several important issues were investigated, including the availability of simulation tools and impacts of DGs connected to a distribution line under a variety of line operating conditions. Based on this preliminary research the further most interesting topics for continued research were raised.;The continued research has focused on deeper investigation, such as, modeling DG sources, evaluating their interaction and impacts, and improving the dynamic stability of the integrated power distribution system. Four specific DGs are studied in this dissertation: fuel cell power plant, wind turbine induction generator, gas turbine synchronous generator and diesel engine synchronous generator.;A full-order synchronous generator model represents the generator models of gas turbine generator and diesel engine generator. A simplified gas turbine model has been chosen to be implemented. A practical diesel engine for emergency use is modeled. The generator model of wind turbine induction generator is represented by a full-order induction generator. The rated power operating regime is considered for impacts evaluations and controller design. Two types of fuel cell models are developed. The first one is a model of already operational phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) obtained through data fitting and the second one is dynamic model of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Since fuel cells are connected to the electric power network via inverters, an inverter model has been developed.;Multi-DG controls are investigated in this dissertation. One DG control is fuel cell control, the other one is wind-turbine control. The control of fuel cell (SOFC) plant is through the inverter to adjust active power injection to the network during the transient time. The control of wind turbine generator is through the parallel connected SVC by adjusting reactive power injection to the system. Both control schemes are centralized.;Linear analysis methodologies are utilized in designing the controller. In the fuel cell control design, two pairs of critical modes are screened out using eigenvalue analysis. The participation factors of DGs with respect to the modes are calculated. Two specific lead-lag compensation units are designed to damp each mode separately. The gains of the two compensation units were then obtained via optimal control methodology. In wind turbine DG control design procedure, three rotor speed deviations are used as input signals while the controller outputs are the firing angle for the SVC and the pitch angle for the wind-turbine DG. An output feedback controller is designed. The dynamic load characteristic is also considered by modeling it as a structured uncertainty. mu-analysis is used to evaluate the robust stability of the controllers with respect to the uncertain parameters in the dynamic loads. The IEEE-13 node radial feeder with existing gas turbine and diesel engine DGs is used as a test system to evaluate the multi-DG control. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the control strategies.;Coordinated operation of all the DGs is investigated. Simulation results show that good configurations within DGs along the system can improve the system stability. Furthermore, the fast acting SVC is very effective in improving damping. Among the DGs investigated in this research, the fuel cell plant control is the best choice for the coordinated operation.;Finally, the approach to model a complete three-phase power distribution system is implemented. The impact of the developed DGs models is evaluated on a three-phase unbalanced distribution system. The three-phase 13-node IEEE system with gas turbine and diesel engine DGs is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink\u27s Power System Blockset (PSB). In the simulation, a three-phase thyristor controlled braking resistor (TCBR) is connected to absorb the surplus energy when the system is subjected to a disturbance.     A methodology for the efficient computer representation of dynamic power systems : application to wind parks

    This contribution presents a methodology to efficiently obtain the numerical and computer solution of dynamic power systems with high penetration of wind turbines. Due to the excessive computational load required to solve the abc models that represent the behavior of the wind turbines, a parallel processing scheme is proposed to enhance the solution of the overall system. Case studies are presented which demonstrate the effectiveness and applications of the proposed methodology

    DFIG versus PMSG for marine current turbine applications

    Emerging technologies for marine current turbine are mainly relevant to works that have been carried out on wind turbines and ship propellers. It is then obvious that many electric generator topologies could be used for marine current turbines. As in the wind turbine context, doubly-fed induction generators and permanent magnet generators seems to be attractive solutions to be used to harness the tidal current energy. In this paper, a comparative study between these two generators type is presented and fully analyzed in terms of generated power, maintenance and operation constraints. This comparison is done for the Raz de Sein site (Brittany, France) using a multi physics modeling simulation tool. This tool integrates, in a modular environment, the resource model, the turbine hydrodynamic model and the generators models

    Modeling and Control for Smart Grid Integration of Solar/Wind Energy Conversion System

    Performance optimization, system reliability and operational efficiency are key characteristics of smart grid systems. In this paper a novel model of smart grid-connected PV/WT hybrid system is developed. It comprises photovoltaic array, wind turbine, asynchronous (induction) generator, controller and converters. The model is implemented using MATLAB/SIMULINK software package. Perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm is used for maximizing the generated power based on maximum power point tracker (MPPT) implementation. The dynamic behavior of the proposed model is examined under different operating conditions. Solar irradiance, temperature and wind speed data is gathered from a grid connected, 28.8kW solar power system located in central Manchester. Real-time measured parameters are used as inputs for the developed system. The proposed model and its control strategy offer a proper tool for smart grid performance optimization

    Full- & Reduced-Order State-Space Modeling of Wind Turbine Systems with Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Generator

    Wind energy is an integral part of nowadays energy supply and one of the fastest growing sources of electricity in the world today. Accurate models for wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) are of key interest for the analysis and control design of present and future energy systems. Existing control-oriented WECSs models are subject to unstructured simplifications, which have not been discussed in literature so far. Thus, this technical note presents are thorough derivation of a physical state-space model for permanent magnet synchronous generator WECSs. The physical model considers all dynamic effects that significantly influence the system's power output, including the switching of the power electronics. Alternatively, the model is formulated in the (a,b,c)(a,b,c)- and (d,q)(d,q)-reference frame. Secondly, a complete control and operation management system for the wind regimes II and III and the transition between the regimes is presented. The control takes practical effects such as input saturation and integral windup into account. Thirdly, by a structured model reduction procedure, two state-space models of WECS with reduced complexity are derived: a non-switching model and a non-switching reduced-order model. The validity of the models is illustrated and compared through a numerical simulation study.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figure

    Techno-economic comparison of operational aspects for direct drive and gearbox-driven wind turbines

    The majority of wind turbines currently in operation have the conventional Danish concept design-that is, the three-bladed rotor of such turbines is indirectly coupled with an electrical generator via a gearbox. Recent technological developments have enabled direct drive wind turbines to become economically feasible. Potentially, direct drive wind turbines may enjoy higher levels of availability due to the removal of the gearbox from the design. However, this is only a theory: so far not substantiated by detailed analytic calculation. By providing such a calculation, this paper enables us to quantitatively evaluate technical and economic merits of direct drive and gearbox-driven wind turbines

    This paper focuses on the analysis of the connection of wind farms to the electric power system and their impact on the harmonic load-flow. A possibilistic harmonic load-flow methodology, previously developed by the authors, allows for modeling uncertainties related to linear and nonlinear load variations. On the other hand, it is well known that some types of wind turbines also produce harmonics, in fact, time-varying harmonics. The purpose of this paper is to present an improvement of the former method, in order to include the uncertainties due to the wind speed variations as an input related with power generated by the turbines. Simulations to test the proposal are performed in the IEEE 14-bus standard test system for harmonic analysis, but replacing the generator, at bus two, by a wind farm composed by ten FPC type wind turbines.En este trabajo se analiza el impacto de la conexión de parques eólicos, en el flujo de cargas armónicas en un sistema de potencia. Algunos generadores eólicos producen armónicos debido a la electrónica de potencia que utilizan para su vinculación con la red. Estos armónicos son variables en el tiempo ya que se relacionan con las variaciones en la velocidad del viento. El propósito de este trabajo es presentar una mejora a la metodología para el cålculo de incertidumbre en el flujo de cargas armónicas, a través de la teoría de la posibilidad, la cual fue previamente desarrollada por los autores. La mejora consiste en incluir la incertidumbre debida a las variaciones de la velocidad del viento. Para probar la metodología, se realizan simulaciones en el sistema de prueba de 14 barras de la IEEE, conectando en una de las barras un parque eólico compuesto por diez turbinas del tipo FPC. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que la incertidumbre en la velocidad del viento tiene un efecto considerable en las incertidumbres asociadas a las magnitudes de las tensiones armónicas calculadas.Fil: Romero Quete, Andrés Arturo.     Power quality issues of 3MW direct-driven PMSG wind turbine

    This paper presents power quality issues of a grid connected wind generation system with a MW-class direct-driven permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). A variable speed wind turbine model was simulated and developed with the simulation tool of PSCAD/EMTDC. The model includes a wind turbine with one mass-model drive train model, a PMSG model and a full-scale voltage source back to back PWM converter. The converter controller model is employed in the dq-synchronous rotating reference frame and applied to both generator and grid sides. To achieve maximum power point tracking, a tip speed ratio method is applied in machine side, whereas DC voltage control is applied in grid side to achieve constant DC voltage. Due to wind fluctuation and power oscillation as a result of wind shear and tower shadow effects (3p), there will be a fluctuation in the output power and voltage. The concerned power quality issues in this work are Harmonics, power fluctuation and flicker emission. The measurements will be carried out under different wind speed and circumstances

    Voltage Stability Analysis of Grid-Connected Wind Farms with FACTS: Static and Dynamic Analysis

    Recently, analysis of some major blackouts and failures of power system shows that voltage instability problem has been one of the main reasons of these disturbances and networks collapse. In this paper, a systematic approach to voltage stability analysis using various techniques for the IEEE 14-bus case study, is presented. Static analysis is used to analyze the voltage stability of the system under study, whilst the dynamic analysis is used to evaluate the performance of compensators. The static techniques used are Power Flow, V–P curve analysis, and Q–V modal analysis. In this study, Flexible Alternating Current Transmission system (FACTS) devices- namely, Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) and Static Var Compensators (SVCs) - are used as reactive power compensators, taking into account maintaining the violated voltage magnitudes of the weak buses within the acceptable limits defined in ANSI C84.1. Simulation results validate that both the STATCOMs and the SVCs can be effectively used to enhance the static voltage stability and increasing network loadability margin. Additionally, based on the dynamic analysis results, it has been shown that STATCOMs have superior performance, in dynamic voltage stability enhancement, compared to SVCs
