Analysis of source code metrics from ns-2 and ns-3 network simulators
Ns-2 and its successor ns-3 are discrete-event simulators which are closely related to each
other as they share common background, concepts and similar aims. Ns-3 is still under
development, but it offers some interesting characteristics for developers while ns-2 still
has a large user base. While other studies have compared different network simulators,
focusing on performance measurements, in this paper we adopted a different approach
by focusing on technical characteristics and using software metrics to obtain useful conclusions.
We chose ns-2 and ns-3 for our case study because of the popularity of the former in
research and the increasing use of the latter. This reflects the current situation where ns-3
has emerged as a viable alternative to ns-2 due to its features and design. The paper
assesses the current state of both projects and their respective evolution supported by
the measurements obtained from a broad set of software metrics. By considering other
qualitative characteristics we obtained a summary of technical features of both simulators

Evaluation of Kermeta for Solving Graph-based Problems
Kermeta is a meta-language for specifying the structure and behavior of graphs of interconnected objects called models. In this paper,\ud
we show that Kermeta is relatively suitable for solving three graph-based\ud
problems. First, Kermeta allows the specification of generic model\ud
transformations such as refactorings that we apply to different metamodels\ud
including Ecore, Java, and Uml. Second, we demonstrate the extensibility\ud
of Kermeta to the formal language Alloy using an inter-language model\ud
transformation. Kermeta uses Alloy to generate recommendations for\ud
completing partially specified models. Third, we show that the Kermeta\ud
compiler achieves better execution time and memory performance compared\ud
to similar graph-based approaches using a common case study. The\ud
three solutions proposed for those graph-based problems and their\ud
evaluation with Kermeta according to the criteria of genericity,\ud
extensibility, and performance are the main contribution of the paper.\ud
Another contribution is the comparison of these solutions with those\ud
proposed by other graph-based tools
Metamodel-based model conformance and multiview consistency checking
Model-driven development, using languages such as UML and BON, often makes use of multiple diagrams (e.g., class and sequence diagrams) when modeling systems. These diagrams, presenting different views of a system of interest, may be inconsistent. A metamodel provides a unifying framework in which to ensure and check consistency, while at the same time providing the means to distinguish between valid and invalid models, that is, conformance. Two formal specifications of the metamodel for an object-oriented modeling language are presented, and it is shown how to use these specifications for model conformance and multiview consistency checking. Comparisons are made in terms of completeness and the level of automation each provide for checking multiview consistency and model conformance. The lessons learned from applying formal techniques to the problems of metamodeling, model conformance, and multiview consistency checking are summarized
Cyber-Virtual Systems: Simulation, Validation & Visualization
We describe our ongoing work and view on simulation, validation and
visualization of cyber-physical systems in industrial automation during
development, operation and maintenance. System models may represent an existing
physical part - for example an existing robot installation - and a software
simulated part - for example a possible future extension. We call such systems
cyber-virtual systems.
In this paper, we present the existing VITELab infrastructure for
visualization tasks in industrial automation. The new methodology for
simulation and validation motivated in this paper integrates this
infrastructure. We are targeting scenarios, where industrial sites which may be
in remote locations are modeled and visualized from different sites anywhere in
the world.
Complementing the visualization work, here, we are also concentrating on
software modeling challenges related to cyber-virtual systems and simulation,
testing, validation and verification techniques for them. Software models of
industrial sites require behavioural models of the components of the industrial
sites such as models for tools, robots, workpieces and other machinery as well
as communication and sensor facilities. Furthermore, collaboration between

Julia Programming Language Benchmark Using a Flight Simulation
Julias goal to provide scripting language ease-of-coding with compiled language speed is explored. The runtime speed of the relatively new Julia programming language is assessed against other commonly used languages including Python, Java, and C++. An industry-standard missile and rocket simulation, coded in multiple languages, was used as a test bench for runtime speed. All language versions of the simulation, including Julia, were coded to a highly-developed object-oriented simulation architecture tailored specifically for time-domain flight simulation. A speed-of-coding second-dimension is plotted against runtime for each language to portray a space that characterizes Julias scripting language efficiencies in the context of the other languages. With caveats, Julia runtime speed was found to be in the class of compiled or semi-compiled languages. However, some factors that affect runtime speed at the cost of ease-of-coding are shown. Julias built-in functionality for multi-core processing is briefly examined as a means for obtaining even faster runtime speed. The major contribution of this research to the extensive language benchmarking body-of-work is comparing Julia to other mainstream languages using a complex flight simulation as opposed to benchmarking with single algorithms
Principles and Concepts of Agent-Based Modelling for Developing Geospatial Simulations
The aim of this paper is to outline fundamental concepts and principles of the Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) paradigm, with particular reference to the development of geospatial simulations. The paper begins with a brief definition of modelling, followed by a classification of model types, and a comment regarding a shift (in certain circumstances) towards modelling systems at the individual-level. In particular, automata approaches (e.g. Cellular Automata, CA, and ABM) have been particularly popular, with ABM moving to the fore. A definition of agents and agent-based models is given; identifying their advantages and disadvantages, especially in relation to geospatial modelling. The potential use of agent-based models is discussed, and how-to instructions for developing an agent-based model are provided. Types of simulation / modelling systems available for ABM are defined, supplemented with criteria to consider before choosing a particular system for a modelling endeavour. Information pertaining to a selection of simulation / modelling systems (Swarm, MASON, Repast, StarLogo, NetLogo, OBEUS, AgentSheets and AnyLogic) is provided, categorised by their licensing policy (open source, shareware / freeware and proprietary systems). The evaluation (i.e. verification, calibration, validation and analysis) of agent-based models and their output is examined, and noteworthy applications are discussed.Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are a particularly useful medium for representing model input and output of a geospatial nature. However, GIS are not well suited to dynamic modelling (e.g. ABM). In particular, problems of representing time and change within GIS are highlighted. Consequently, this paper explores the opportunity of linking (through coupling or integration / embedding) a GIS with a simulation / modelling system purposely built, and therefore better suited to supporting the requirements of ABM. This paper concludes with a synthesis of the discussion that has proceeded. A conceptual architecture for interactive educational multimedia
Learning is more than knowledge acquisition; it often involves the active participation of the learner in a variety of knowledge- and skills-based learning and training activities. Interactive multimedia technology can support the variety of interaction channels and languages required to facilitate interactive learning and teaching.
A conceptual architecture for interactive educational multimedia can support the development of such multimedia systems. Such an architecture needs to embed multimedia technology into a coherent educational context. A framework based on an integrated interaction model is needed to capture learning and training activities in an online setting from an educational perspective, to describe them in the human-computer context, and to integrate them with mechanisms and principles of multimedia interaction
