On the Combinatorics of Locally Repairable Codes via Matroid Theory
This paper provides a link between matroid theory and locally repairable
codes (LRCs) that are either linear or more generally almost affine. Using this
link, new results on both LRCs and matroid theory are derived. The parameters
of LRCs are generalized to matroids, and the matroid
analogue of the generalized Singleton bound in [P. Gopalan et al., "On the
locality of codeword symbols," IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory] for linear LRCs is
given for matroids. It is shown that the given bound is not tight for certain
classes of parameters, implying a nonexistence result for the corresponding
locally repairable almost affine codes, that are coined perfect in this paper.
Constructions of classes of matroids with a large span of the parameters
and the corresponding local repair sets are given. Using
these matroid constructions, new LRCs are constructed with prescribed
parameters. The existence results on linear LRCs and the nonexistence results
on almost affine LRCs given in this paper strengthen the nonexistence and
existence results on perfect linear LRCs given in [W. Song et al., "Optimal

Matroidal Mixed Eulerian Numbers
We make a systematic study of matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers which are
certain intersection numbers in the matroid Chow ring generalizing the mixed
Eulerian numbers introduced by Postnikov. These numbers are shown to be
valuative and obey a log-concavity relation. We establish recursion formulas
and use them to relate matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers to the characteristic
and Tutte polynomials, reproving results of Huh-Katz and Berget-Spink-Tseng.
Generalizing Postnikov, we show that these numbers are equal to certain
weighted counts of binary trees. Lastly, we study these numbers for perfect
matroid designs, proving that they generalize the remixed Eulerian numbers of
Nadeau-Tewari.Comment: 31 page
T-uniqueness of some families of k-chordal matroids
We define k-chordal matroids as a generalization of chordal matroids, and develop tools for proving that some k-chordal matroids are T-unique, that is, determined up to isomorphism by their Tutte polynomials. Weight spectra of Gabidulin rank-metric codes and Betti numbers
The Helmholtz equation has been used for modeling the sound pressure field under a harmonic load. Computing harmonic sound pressure fields by means of solving Helmholtz equation can quickly become unfeasible if one wants to study many different geometries for ranges of frequencies. We propose a machine learning approach, namely a feedforward dense neural network, for computing the average sound pressure over a frequency range. The data are generated with finite elements, by numerically computing the response of the average sound pressure, by an eigenmode decomposition of the pressure. We analyze the accuracy of the approximation and determine how much training data is needed in order to reach a certain accuracy in the predictions of the average pressure response

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is an inflammatory condition associated with iron abnormalities and increased oxidative damage. We aimed to investigate how diabetes affects the interrelationships between these pathogenic mechanisms. METHODS: Glycaemic control, serum iron, proteins involved in iron homeostasis, global antioxidant capacity and levels of antioxidants and peroxidation products were measured in 39 type 1 and 67 type 2 diabetic patients and 100 control subjects. RESULTS: Although serum iron was lower in diabetes, serum ferritin was elevated in type 2 diabetes (p = 0.02). This increase was not related to inflammation (C-reactive protein) but inversely correlated with soluble transferrin receptors (r = - 0.38, p = 0.002). Haptoglobin was higher in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes (p < 0.001) and haemopexin was higher in type 2 diabetes (p < 0.001). The relation between C-reactive protein and haemopexin was lost in type 2 diabetes (r = 0.15, p = 0.27 vs r = 0.63, p < 0.001 in type 1 diabetes and r = 0.36, p = 0.001 in controls). Haemopexin levels were independently determined by triacylglycerol (R(2) = 0.43) and the diabetic state (R(2) = 0.13). Regarding oxidative stress status, lower antioxidant concentrations were found for retinol and uric acid in type 1 diabetes, alpha-tocopherol and ascorbate in type 2 diabetes and protein thiols in both types. These decreases were partially explained by metabolic-, inflammatory- and iron alterations. An additional independent effect of the diabetic state on the oxidative stress status could be identified (R(2) = 0.5-0.14). CONCLUSIONS: Circulating proteins, body iron stores, inflammation, oxidative stress and their interrelationships are abnormal in patients with diabetes and differ between type 1 and type 2 diabetes</p
