Natural language processing
Beginning with the basic issues of NLP, this chapter aims to chart the major research activities in this area since the last ARIST Chapter in 1996 (Haas, 1996), including: (i) natural language text processing systems - text summarization, information extraction, information retrieval, etc., including domain-specific applications; (ii) natural language interfaces; (iii) NLP in the context of www and digital libraries ; and (iv) evaluation of NLP systems
Controlling Risk of Web Question Answering
Web question answering (QA) has become an indispensable component in modern
search systems, which can significantly improve users' search experience by
providing a direct answer to users' information need. This could be achieved by
applying machine reading comprehension (MRC) models over the retrieved passages
to extract answers with respect to the search query. With the development of
deep learning techniques, state-of-the-art MRC performances have been achieved
by recent deep methods. However, existing studies on MRC seldom address the
predictive uncertainty issue, i.e., how likely the prediction of an MRC model
is wrong, leading to uncontrollable risks in real-world Web QA applications. In
this work, we first conduct an in-depth investigation over the risk of Web QA.
We then introduce a novel risk control framework, which consists of a qualify
model for uncertainty estimation using the probe idea, and a decision model for
selectively output. For evaluation, we introduce risk-related metrics, rather
than the traditional EM and F1 in MRC, for the evaluation of risk-aware Web QA.
The empirical results over both the real-world Web QA dataset and the academic
MRC benchmark collection demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.Comment: 42nd International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development

ICT-DCU question answering task at NTCIR-6
This paper describes details of our participation in the
NTCIR-6 Chinese-to-Chinese Question Answering task. We
use the “retrieval plus extraction approach” to get answers
for questions. We first split the documents into short passages, and then retrieve potentially relevant passages for a question, and finally extract named entity answers from the most relevant passages. For question type identification, we use simple heuristic rules which cover most questions. The Lemur toolkit was used with the okapi model for document retrieval. Results of our task submission are given and some preliminary conclusions drawn
Neural Generative Question Answering
This paper presents an end-to-end neural network model, named Neural
Generative Question Answering (GENQA), that can generate answers to simple
factoid questions, based on the facts in a knowledge-base. More specifically,
the model is built on the encoder-decoder framework for sequence-to-sequence
learning, while equipped with the ability to enquire the knowledge-base, and is
trained on a corpus of question-answer pairs, with their associated triples in
the knowledge-base. Empirical study shows the proposed model can effectively
deal with the variations of questions and answers, and generate right and
natural answers by referring to the facts in the knowledge-base. The experiment
on question answering demonstrates that the proposed model can outperform an
embedding-based QA model as well as a neural dialogue model trained on the same
data.Comment: Accepted by IJCAI 201
